A bitter librarian sets off with the town pariah to find ancient, possibly non-existent gold. The story is entertaining but most of the characters aren't real likable. The end does contain an unexpected plot twist that I personally didn't like.

This is absolutely without question the worst book I have ever read. It has everything: truly unlikable characters, "preying mantis" sex, pointless violence and a disgusting plot to make it a total waste of my time and money. I wish there were some way to give it no stars.

Please note: Yes, I realize that this book is fiction and is not intended to represent the real past or present of upstate New York. Nonetheless, real people and real places appear in the book. I can only assume that the author set the story in a real village in New York because he holds some sort of grudge against them.

I would recommend instead historical mystery fiction by Miriam Grace Monfredolike Blackwater Spirits, North Star Conspiracy, and Seneca Falls Inheritance; fiction by Rhys Bowen like Murphy's Law or British historical mystery fiction by Laurie R. King.

A good book to pick up and be able to put down and start again due to a very simple plot. Not sure what Daisy and Cornelia Loomis have in common except that they both seem to command the respect of their "gang".
