You and I and Yesterday

Rate this book
Out of a full and joyous heart, Marjorie Holmes recalls the magical moments of her small-town childhood in Iowa-the simple pleasures that gave life special zest and favor.

Spring, with homemade kites soaring and dipping in the sky...Golden days in grandpa's garden before fruits and vegetables grew on supermarket shelves...The comfort and companionship of suppertime with the whole family gathered together...The luscious aroma of bread baking in the old-fashioned coal stove...Santa Claus riding into town on a bobsied...The thrill of getting a secondhand Tin Lizzie.

"Things didn't happen very often," says Marjorie Holmes, "but when they did they happened grand."

Marjorie Holmes describes her life as a child in Iowa - with tone of yearning for the good old days. She makes her childhood sound idyllic, with her loving family and simple pleasures.

Delightful little book. It was interesting to read her nostalgic musings comparing yesterday to her "today," which was actually in the 70s. Made me wonder what she would think of our "today."

I really enjoyed the walk back in time when I read this book. I’d only known the author’s historical fiction, but reading a bit of her own history was good as well.
