A childhood and adolescence memoir from the now long forgotten author and broadcaster,Edward Blishen.His memoir of teaching in a rough post war school in London,”The Roaring Boys” Is excellent and still worthwhile reading today with many practical tips.This is one of his series of memoirs from different parts of his life.Very enjoyable but I think you’d have to be like me,an older man familiar with his times - such a different time- to enjoy it.Useful perhaps in the future as social history but enjoyable to lovers of memoirs from a bygone age.Very sad in parts too when talking about a fellow worker on a newspaper and casually saying he died at Dunkirk;or his girl friend who went away, war broke out and he never saw her again.Such is life.And with this book he finally said sorry to his dad for their mutual lack of understanding.

Found this book much like 'The Catcher In The Rye' by J D Salinger, just a ramble from end to end. Not for me!
