I really don't like giving negative reviews about books, but sadly sometimes I have to since I'm honest. I usually don't read Chick Lit because it isn't really my cup of tea, not that I would call this book Chick Lit. This was closer to erotica than anything else.

I didn't like any of the characters, they were all terrible people. The main female character was just sex crazed, which by itself wasn't the problem I had with the story. The men in the book where both verbally abusive and also treated the female lead as a possession, which I have never understood why some women fantasize about being with men like this. Her best friend was also a horrible person and encouraged her promiscuous behavior from the start, a good best friend wouldn't encourage you to cheat on multiple people just because you wanted to. The friend then later reprimands her for not seeing "what a great guy" the younger one is and believe me, both men were just as bad.

There was not a "good guy", there was no romance. Even the guy that was considered the "better man" had serious mental and anger problems which would definitely keep me from getting intimate with or even in a relationship with him. He was also extremely manipulative and she just gave into his bad behavior because she didn't want to make him mad, that's a huge problem and is definitely not a trait of a healthy relationship. Tolerating that sort of abuse just so you can get laid means you have a problem too, as she definitely did.

I had held out a little hope that as it went on it would get better, but sadly it only got worse along the way. The sex scenes couldn't even save it, it was like someone mindlessly documenting a play-by-play of a bad porno with some weird fetishes thrown in it. None of which got the reader's motor running and in fact a lot of the sex scenes were a huge turn off. I love a good sex scene, but there weren't any to be found here.

I just couldn't get behind or relate to the fact that the main female character couldn't control herself and had no self esteem at all. Plus letting these guys treat her the way they do and in return treating them just as bad and still screwing them any chance she gets, there is nothing desirable or attractive about any of that. When I finished the book I sincerely tried to think if there was anything about the book I liked, which is what I always do when I read a poor book, but I honestly could not think of one thing that I liked or enjoyed.

Once again, maybe this isn't my thing and that's why I didn't get it, but this isn't the type of thing women want to read when they are in the mood of a romance or chick lit.

Crazy Gone Love is an audiobook distributed by Podiobooks.com for free, although donations are always appreciated. It is written in the chick-lit style, substituting references to Prada and Manolo Blahniks for mentions of bands and clubs. It follows Ceil, a customer service rep at a luxury auto dealership, as she tries to snag a sexy older man who also happens to be her new boss. The main obstacle to completing her quest is the nutso rock singer who is obsessed with her.

Anyone who has read my other audiobook reviews knows that I am not a fan of readers who do over-the-top voices. I'm not sure how I feel about the job done by Anna Kelk, the reader of this novel. Some of her voices were positively grating while others weren't so bad once I got used to them. I probably would have enjoyed them more if they were used in a full-cast audiodrama without the narration in between. I've read that Kelk is Brody's preferred reader, so I hope that she tones it done a bit next time.

There was some question on the Podiobooks blog about why this book was classified as chick-lit rather than a straight romance novel. The author stated it was because of the humor in the book, but I think the characters also set this book apart from other romances. These characters are firmly rooted in reality. I've been reading a lot of books in both genres lately, and this is the first one I've read where I wasn't sure who Ceil would end up with or whether she should be with either man. Everyone in this book had flaws and issues, and not those cute little excusable quirks that other romance authors throw in to make the characters seem more human.

I would suggest this book to a mature reader with a rock-and-roll sensibility. There are several explicit sex scenes and plenty of cursing, so I wouldn't hand it to my 16-year-old.
