A speed trap along the highway catches Mark Peters doing 90 m.p.h. When Officer W. V. Tench approaches the car, Mark is sure the cop is the best looking guy he's ever seen and Mark can hardly utter an intelligent, coherent word. Unbelievably, Mark is issued a warning to keep his pretty smile off the pavement, turning Mark's world into mush.

Nice and cute short story, but I'd really liked it to be just a little longer and, um, hotter! xD Although Mark's adorable and charming and his friends are hysterical at times.
This is one of those short stories where the blurb pretty much tells you everything that happens, but knowing all of that ahead of time didn’t spoil the story one bit. What makes Speed Trap such a joy to read is the humour and sparkling dialogue, along with some truly memorable characters.
Mark is a thoroughly charming point of view character. We might not find out anything about his background, but the view I got into his thoughts and feelings as he reacts to being pulled over had me instantly hooked. Indeed, I was surprised at this, because I don’t normally have much sympathy for speeding drivers. However, Mark’s panic as he tries to locate his registration among the dump that is his glove compartment, is quickly supplanted by pure, brain numbing lust when he gets a good look at the cop who pulled him over.
Insta-lust is one of those tropes that can come across as hugely tacky, but all credit to JM Snyder, here it’s hysterical. Mark is constantly sabotaged by his rampant imagination as he tries to respond to Lt Tench’s simple questions, and he ends up making a complete fool of himself. For example:
Handing over the license and registration, Lt. Tench pushed his hat back and leaned on the door frame. “So I guess I’m your first, aren’t I?”
With his mind full of the two of them, naked and sweating and clutched in the throes of passion, Mark wasn’t quite sure what he meant. “Oh no,” he said, shaking his head. “I’ve done it before…”
He saw the frown on the policeman’s face and caught himself. “Oh, wait. You’re not talking about that.”
Usually confident and charming, Mark can’t seem to string a coherent sentence together and he knows it. Worse yet, he manages to let the man of his dreams go without exchanging numbers.
The next scene picks up with Mark trying to tell his two friends about the incident, and being teased mercilessly. The banter is perfectly executed and again, although we’re given no background on Doug and Tiffany they come across as memorable characters in their own right. Even the second traffic cop, who has only a couple of lines in the whole story, is rendered deftly by the pitch perfect prose.
The only thing that really prevents this getting an A is the rather abrupt ending. Don’t get me wrong, it’s happy and hopeful, and I suppose it’s good to be left wanting more. However, I really could have done with another scene to round it all off. Preferably a smutty one, as I bet it would have been hilarious. Maybe I’m just being greedy, though. I can certainly highly recommend this story to any readers who enjoy a good giggle and appreciate witty dialogue.
This cute little short about a guy trying to find the cop who stopped him originally for speeding made me snort out loud several times as the poor guy stumbled over himself and completely lost his cool factor in the face of a hot cop. His friend was a bit of an annoying big mouth but it was still a very cute read.
I think what I love the most is the cuteness of it. The cuteness of one guy trying to catch the attention of the police officer who caught him for passing the speeding limit. Gosh, his thoughts were so funny, I found myself smiling like crazy idiot.
Reviewed by Mia: I liked Speed Trap. Its a nice, sweet short story with a bit of humor thrown in. There's no sex involved which makes its a light but still enjoyable read.
I think its a shame that its such a short story and I hope that there will be a sequel of sorts.
