Okay. Supposedly about space but also about earth at the same time (because earth is in space, and earth is full of amazing places). That premise is fine, and the whimsical illustrations have a subtle fun (e.g., how an animal from each page joins the boy on the rest of his adventures until he has amassed quite a collection of fellow travelers). A few misleading statements or pictures bug me (roasting marshmallows over a fire at the top of a volcano? statement that ice turns into land?). If we're trying to convince our space-obsessed kids that the earth is an amazing place (which it is), let's focus on the ways that it's truly amazing and not include fantastical things or scientifically wrong statements. Obviously I far prefer realism to fantasy, and lots of families probably have no problem with those two pages. I don't care about the other fantastical things (like a fish in a fishbowl balancing on a dolphin or riding an alligator), but those two in particular just bug me. I think I just get tired of correcting the obvious untruths. "Volcanoes really don't burn like a campfire; they shoot molten rock and poisonous ash and smoke into the air, and no one can roast marshmallows on them." "While in some parts of the world you can walk on and even camp on the ice, it never changes into land."
I thought that I was going to read a space/astronaut book for my wife to consider for our local library's space-themed storytime in a couple days.
I was wrong. Very wrong.
If you think this is a book about space, you are sadly mistaken. This is a book about being on earth, and the author somehow has it in his head that since the earth is in space that makes us in space. And that's what the entire book is about.
Hits on topic of science (earth is a part of space). TWIST: Talks about how when we explore earth, we are technically exploring space. There are so many cool things to discover here. Great book for wonder and exploration of the world we live in.
This one was cute. It could've been a little shorter. It would've benefitted from not forcing the children to pay attention as long. Other than that, the story was cute, and the pictures were comical and fun. Not a bad read for Earth Day.
This is a cute book about space. The boy in the book discovers that we are all living in outer space. I would use this book when talking about science to younger children. It has lots of rhyming words as well.
I discovered this book in a Doctor's office! Went home and ordered it right away! My kids and I love it. A fun and exciting exploration of space as seen from planet Earth. My children have always wanted to travel to space and this book showed them they live in space!!
I thought this was a cute book as my son really enjoying space books, but I thought it was a tad confusing for him because it was implied that because you live on Earth you live in space, which just isn't true. The rest of it was great though.
