In this book, Jamie weaves his struggle with ice and mountain amid his journey through the ruthless Empty Quarter and places the reader intimately near the Arabian Bedu. Along with over 100 glossy photos, Jamie's descriptive writing transports the reader through Everest's and Arabia's astonishing landscapes. More than this, we get through his reflective insights, a look at our own character in the mirror of a culture older than western civilization.
A 39-day journey on camels to cross the Empty Quarter desert from coast to coast. Starting from the coast of Salalah, Oman crossing Saudi Arabia all the way to coast of Abu Dhabi. This book will take you on one of their camels to live the journey and immerse in the desert culture of Arabia.
Years ago, I volunteered at an event at which Jamie spoke. I bought his book which he signed, and then I didn't read it until now about 20 years later! I don't know why I waited so long! This was such an incredibly interesting book because it was an adventure many of us would never consider. I was fascinated by his description of the camels they rode and used for packing, and I also enjoyed reading about the bugs they dealt with in general and in their food as well as the amazing Bedu characters. I find camels extremely interesting, but before this book, I knew next to nothing about them. Now when I go to our local zoo, I will definitely hang around them a little longer and dream! As I read the book, there were times I felt as if I were on the trek with them. Descriptive and well done.
I met and visted with Jamie Clarke in Las Vegas 2001. He has a remarkable story. While impressed by his Mt. Everest climb, I think it's his trek across the Arabian Desert that most fascinated me. In person, the guy simply radiates kindness and positivity.
