The Guardians is book one in the Guardians series by Mandy M. Roth.
The author was offering up many of her titles for free on Authors Direct a while back and I decide to pick up a few in audio to give them a try. I’ve enjoyed Roth in the past and was interested to try out this new series.
The Guardians had it’s good and bad moments. Their where things I enjoyed and others that where odd. It didn’t help that the story felt disjoined and that the relationships between everyone introduced where confusing.
Madelyn Mason, is the only female Guardian in a sea of males. Brady is her friend and roommate. Madelyn wants to tell Brady who she is, but humans can’t know about the supernatural world. He’s been in her life a long time and has put off telling her who he is, until she is ready to see him as more. Their relationship is friends to lovers.
Their is a sea of secrets being kept from Madelyn. Everyone in her life is keeping something from her. Even with the knowledge that she gains she can’t connect the pieces. We get information showing her past, who she is, what she is to become, and information on her mate. It was a dump of information on the reader and characters. I didn’t feel it was spread out enough. Just an overload of information coming all at once. When things do start coming out I felt that Madelyn was way to complacent in her reaction. She just accepted it all. I felt she needed to have more of a reaction like a smart ass comment or get a little mad at all the secrets being kept from her.
The author also introduces a plethora of characters. We get God’s, Powers, lycons, vampires, and more. It was a bit overwhelm all these characters and what they can do and their relationships to Madelyn.
Last, Brady and Madelyn’s relationship is an up and down ride. One minute they get along; then something happens and their not sure. I will say that the sex is steamy and hot.
Narration: Now I’ve only ever listened to audios on Hoopla, Overdrive, or Audible apps never on Authors Direct until now. I had some trouble with the audio. It was choppy, disjointed, and didn’t flow. I tried it in 1.1x, 1.2x & 1.3x, but it still had all those issues so, I continued to listen in the 1.0x.
Sarah Van Sweden’s narration was just ok. Her tone and pacing to discern each character was minimal, but became more pronounced as the story progressed. I did notice that she did tiny pauses at each syllable and that each word was articulated; which left me knowing that the text was being read. It made the story disjointed and upset the flow.
The Guardians was an ok listen, but at this time I don’t think I’ll be continuing the series. If the blurb intrigues you, I urge you to give it a shot. Just because it did not work for me does not mean it won’t for you.
Honestly, I'm actually kind of proud of myself for making it as far into this book as I did. I've read a lot of crappy books--I went through this whole young adult vampire phase that I can't think about without feeling embarrassed--but this book was just as bad, if not worse than angst-filled vampire teen sap. To put my complaints bluntly, there were very few redeeming qualities that I saw in the first third of the book, which was all I could manage to get through. The characters were unrealistic. The heroine was pretty much blind to what was going on around her, and her supposed "spunk" was meh. I felt no endearment for her at all. Also, her behavior was ridiculous.. somehow, she missed the memo that people don't lick their best friend's navel with the intention of giving said best friend a hard on, and then insist that the relationship is totally platonic. Sorry, I'm ranting. Deep breath. Anyways, other aspects of the book also failed to impress. The action was pretty bad--there's one scene when the love interest gets surrounded by a group of bad guys, and to take them down he holds his arm out and spins in a circle. Yup. Spins. In. A. Circle. The romance was..well, I can't say if this is something people like to read, so it might appeal to others, but it was weird for me. The guy is very codependent and when I finally put the book down, was in the midst of throwing a hissy jealousy fit. He's very sappy. The writing was awkward and read like something you would expect from an overly dramatic, sex crazed preteen. Or a middle aged woman in the midst of an excruciating dry spell. Maybe I'm being too mean, but the point is I found this book ridiculous. Very rarely do I not finish a book because I read fast and get sucked into literary worlds pretty quickly, but this one was a definite no.
I really tried to give this book the benefit of the doubt. I read it all the way through so there is that. To be frank, I have a strong dislike for this book. It had almost every story point that I hate. It started out interesting too but the longer it went on, the more my distaste for it grew.
I picked it up because it was listed as a Kindle daily deal. I've already begun to squint when it was listed for free for unlimited users but got it anyways.
I never felt like she was in any real danger. She was always surrounded by people who are super powerful. On top of that she's powerful as well. And! Something convenient happens to remove the danger anyways. There was nothing for me to be worked up over.
I dislike how much the story kept doing flashbacks and how much of a focus there was on the past. There were better ways to go about this. I felt like a ton of information was just dumped on the reader. At that point, the author may as well do a book starting from those points instead. The flashbacks and visions to the past took up more attention than the here and now.
Immediately, I'm supposed to believe Brady is just a friend when I never got that vibe at all. This girl had to have been blind to not see that he's a lycan.
There were a lot of points brought up throughout the story trying to emphasise that he wouldn't view a child sexually. It was like beating me over the head with a hammer over and over. After awhile, it felt more like the author trying to avoid the fiasco over Twilight and the werewolf latching onto the baby dealio. I get it. He's not attracted to the baby in that way. Good on you. Can we concentrate on the story now?
There was a point with Hudson being brought in as a third wheel. It felt like the story was trying to force a love triangle that I wasn't seeing. The character all together seemed unnecessary. He was literally brought in with the sole reason to create turmoil. That's it. I didn't like that.
And now the daddy happens to be the uber bad ass vampire? Oh wait! Don't forget the mom is a goddess! That's not all! Her mate happens to be the most powerful lycan! *jazz hands* I apologise. One reveal after another connecting her to these powerful people just screams out the Mary Sue trope. Then you had to add in these mysterious powers that make her the most powerful being which only adds to my point. And now everyone is a god with new powers.
....
Do you see my point?
Truthfully, I wouldn't recommend this book to others. I wouldn't nay say it either unless someone asked me for my personal opinion. I don't hate it. The book contained a lot of story points that I have a short fuse for. That, and I know how picky I can become over what books I read. This book easily blends into the background and I'll end up forgetting it. There's nothing about it that gives me something memorable to hang onto aside from not liking it based more on personal dislikes. It’s one of those books aimed at a different kind of audience that’s not me. LOL
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
2.5* This has only be on my TBR pile forever This had promise, the world was interesting but the story was disjointed and hard to follow. I had to reread some parts again because I thought I missed something or couldn't follow the conversation. It seemed like everyone had god like powers - which really just bugged me
You ever read a book and you are just saying, “Ok wow! I really like this one”? Then you sit down to write the review and you just can’t think what to put down because you don’t want to give away all the plot and if you go into character analysis you might give away spoilers and the plot? And really when it comes down to it the blurb for this one is really right on. So here is my lame attempt to do what the author already did so well.
In The Guardian, there are moments of jealousy and moments of betrayal. There are heart-rending moments of recollection and revelation. These are also moments where pieces fall so well together. Things that were mysteries begin to make so much sense for Madelyn. There is absolutely no way anyone could doubt that Brady loves Madelyn and that these two are meant for each other. Perhaps it’s the depth of their love that is in question at times, but never fear you won’t have a doubt by the end.
Both Brady and Madelyn are holding out on each other. They both have their secrets. Madelyn is a guardian. She is totally kick ass in a fight whether it’s hand to hand, with weapons or with magic. Her position with the guardians though holds an obligation of secrecy. So, by day she hangs out with her best friend Brady on the set of whatever his latest role in stardom demands and by night she’s out protecting the streets from evil things that go bump in the night. Of course, not all things that go bump in the night are evil and Mads is only after the evil predators that target humans. While the relationship between Brady and Mads might appear light and humorous on the surface, the reality is that it has such depth. Mads loves Brady to the exclusion of all else. It just might take her a while though to realize just how much she loves him. When you add sex to the equation these two can burn down the set with just how hot they are together.
Oh and did I mention Brady has a few secrets of his own? I won’t bother telling you just what they are. I mean excuse me, can you say spoiler alert? Let’s just say this is one alpha male that has been hiding his light under the bushel. He’s also been hiding just how much he wants, needs and loves Madelyn. When these two come together in their first kiss all the doors are blown off his restraint. He may appear the playboy star but appearances are so much not reality. Madelyn has been the be all, end all of Brady’s life and she always will be. Put Madelyn in danger and you’ll find out just how alpha he truly is and maybe just a shade stubborn as well.
Rounding out the cast are some great secondary characters I’m looking forward to hearing more about in future books in the series. Madelyn has her exes. One she still loves deeply and if you don’t think that will stir up its own issues then think again. However, love sometimes has a way of morphing; what once was becomes something else entirely when you discover the true love of your life. Then there is the current ex, can you say two timing douche? Or is he? Oh and don’t ask me about daddies and big brothers. I totally love ‘em. On the other hand, you have a lineup of petty villains and one nasty mofo that will see this series through quite a few books.
The world and story building is on par for the caliber of writing you can expect from Mandy, in other words, excellent. So yes, I would definitely recommend this one. If you like gods, goddesses, shifters, vampires, nymphs and magic with a bit of save the world then you need to read The Guardians. Oh and if you are looking for that bit of spice and erotic keep a towel ready to wipe the sweat from your brow and fan yourself.
I was gifted this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book had so much promise. I was really hoping that there would be more to this book, but I found the characters cardboardish, the story line landed in the toilet by the end and the writing style made me cringe.
I enjoyed the idea of a famous movie star and a girl becoming involved, because who doesnt like that story line? Roth adds Watchers into the mix, those who keep the human population safe from the big bads, and theyre all supernatural creatures as well! Pretty darn cool.
Brady starts out as a ladies man and typical movie star and crash lands as Madelyn's bitch. All the men in the book become her slaves, and all characters who are not related to the main character have slept with her. Not only this, but even though her parents own a movie studio and clearly are loaded, Madelyn cannot afford a bra or two. Can I have her address so I can FedEx her some?
Madelyn is the only character who evoked any kind of emotion from me concerning her personality. I hated her. Shes slutty, and at the end of the book shes also a control freak.
This book could have been so much more, if it wasn't for the de-evolution of its story line for sex, characters blossoming into lesser selves, and the main character suffering from raving nymphomania or severe case of OCD, I might have actually liked this.. Nine times after losing her virginity? Really? And a werewolf that fights via twirling? Ill stick with sparkly vampires, thanks.
Did I mention Roth uses no euphemisms for the sex, and I got the feeling she was using the most explicit words possible for their genitalia as a shock value. I honestly wasn't upset by the sexual content, only the method she used to describe it.
To each their own. No hate mail, please. Most people I know loved this book, so obviously Im not the norm.
I will not read another Mandy Roth book EVER again. One hundred pages of everything I hate about books.
This story starts out simple enough, a hunky famous movie star, Brady, best friends(and wannabe lover) with Maddy who apparently has some magical powers. The story continues to unfold like the layers of an onion compelling you to keep reading and peeling back the layers of the story. This first book on the series introduces us to a melting pot of paranormal character. There are vampires, lucans, werewolves, gods and goddesses, demons, sex nymphs, guardians and hybrids of all the above. There is more than one gorgeous sexy alpha hero in this mix that makes it all the more yummy, and of course a kick-ass confident fearless heroine. Wonderful world building and very creative, intriguing histories for all the many characters. Anyone of their stories would make a great sequel. An exciting, adventurous, emotional, sexy, romantic book that will hold you captured with its full cast of paranormal players.
Wow, this story is action packed with rippling muscles and a bunch of very hot and intimidating super naturals of all kinds.
Madelyn is one lucky chick, even if she doesn't think so. She is a Guardian, but she has all the hot Guardians wrapped around her pinky, even a sex nymph and a Vampire! She has no idea the power she wields, literally.
Brady is one very sexy and famous movie star and Mads roommate, but is that all? There is something that keeps pulling her to him, but why and why doesn't she want him sexually, all the other chicks do, he is way hot!
Read this story to find out why, man is it ever surprising! Lots of action, hunks in the form of shifters, vampires, nymphs and even gods!
I loved reading it, so entertaining, had me laughing all through the book.
I was gifted a copy of this book by Mandy in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this story. I was eagerly turning pages as the story unfolded. A nice tight story line which was well written and well edited. I find nothing to complain about as I got to know Madelyn, Brady, Hudson, Gabriel and Franco.
I highly recommend this story to all who love shifter, vampires, gods and a goddess. I don't think you will be disappointed by purchasing and reading this story.
I hope there is a book 2 and that this story is only the beginning of Madelyn's adventures.
This book has such a great story, that as you read each page, you learn more and more about each of the charcters that you just love the build-up. I can say I enjoyed how this was written, it unfolds bit by bit, and that part was writing at it's best. I enjoyed the strong female character, and loved how everything flows through out the book. Mandy Roth is becoming a big favorite author of paranormal romance. I recommend it to all paranormal romance with hot Alpha males with steamy hot scenes that will make your legs get weak at that moment! 18+
WOW i don't even know what to say this book was freaking amazing i loved it. there was a boat load of emotions in this humour action sex love mandy is an amazing writer this story had vampires gods goddesses werewolves nymphs magic what an amazing book would definitely recommend this book i hope there is a book 2
This book was recommended to me by another author I like. This is my first experience with Mandy Roth and I must say, I was not disappointed. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Enough drama and kick-assery to keep me interested without over-doing the love scenes.
Het verhaal begon goed maar ging na een tijdje alleen maar over seks. Zo jammer want het had veel potentie! En de cover vind ik echt verschrikkelijk. Toch 2 sterren voor het begin.
I was able to finish this story, but that was only through sure will. There was just too much uncertainty and back-and-forth between the H/h. I couldn't grasp the fact that they were meant to be together, it just didn't click for me. I won't be continuing the series.
I loved this story from page one. I am partial to feisty women with witty dialogue. Madelyn is as snarky with her internal thoughts as her conversations. She is a lone female Guardian, those who make sure mortals are not taken out by supernaturals. Maddie knows she has magik, and uses it to protect. She also has a great male friend, Brady who is a hot film commodity. He is a lot more, and he means more to her. While she is attracted she doesn't want to ruin their friendship, a friendship that pushes many boundaries.
There is much she doesn't know and circumstances start to require answers that only bring more questions.
Fighting the bad guys, using her magik, school all threaten her endurance and makes her vulnerable. She learns that Brady is much more and their relationship is going to change. Old loves come back into her life, family she didn't know existed. Her life is changing. She is kick-ass. The strength of the uncanny loyalty she engenders with the males in her world surprises them and Madelyn. The fight scenes are vivid and brutal. The steamy scenes could heat all of Alaska for a winter. Don't miss the pole dancing sequence and the reaction of all.
There is a war coming and all the Guardians must prepare. Can she find her love while all this goes on? Will all the revelations be too much? Ms. Roth promises a wild ride in her description and she delivers
The Guardians is a fun and entertaining read! We first meet Madelyn Mason and her friend/room mate Brady on a movie set. We quickly learn that there is much more to Madelyn than meets the eye, she is a Guardian. She is talked with protecting innocent humans from the supernatural world. With everything that she puts up with around her, she really has her hands full! As the story progresses, we find that all of the people in her life have been placed in key ways that even she wasn't aware of. Now she has to make sense of all the things she didn't know, deal with a bullheaded group of men, and keep herself alive in the process! All in a days work right? Madelyn is a kick-ass heroine and I am excited to read more about her in the books to come. I love that she is humble, but not wimpy. She is strong, and yet vulnerable. Madelyn is smart, and oh so snarky. I love the snark! Excellent start to a series! ~Dowie
I wanted to like this. It started out OK. But then it all just fell apart.
By the end, the main character was the Most Super Special Paranormal Ever In The Whole World (tm), because it wasn't enough to just be the only female guardian. I was also really confused by all these sudden powers and why and the mythology - it all just seemed to go off the rails.
I was also really shocked that more wasn't made of her being the only female guardian - surely there would be some push back to that?
Instead it was a few hundred pages about her relationships with men. So many men in this book, so few women. Just no.
2 1/2 stars. This book had potential for me. I loved a physically strong h and good action. However, there were too many things getting in the way of me loving it. I felt the H was not alpha enough for me--he was too annoying, and acted like a big baby some times. I like funny and witty, but I found this too over the top and silly for my taste--I actually found myself rolling my eyes too much. The action was pretty good, but everything just didn't mesh well for me. I do like this author, and will be reading more from her.

I loved it. Sooooooo much action. I don't like to give the story away so all I will tell you Madelyn Mason is a strong willed kick butt guardian. The story is hot and full of so much action that the author could have made 3 books out of it lol. I loved it and so hope she makes a part 2 and so on! I want to read them all. If you love action and a great story plot with your romance then this book is for you.
So, I ended up really enjoying this book. The premise is interesting, unique, and I loved the action scenes. The reason why I say I ended up enjoying the book is because the characters came off rather moronic at times, and I was having a hard time wanting to continue. Also, I listened to the audiobook version of this story, and the narrator was really grating on my nerves. Her voice was really breathy, and added to my thoughts that the female lead was a ditzy bimbo, and at times her voice was a bit robotic, so I was having a hard time getting past that to continue the story, but I pressed on and I was glad I did. I do really enjoy Mandy M. Roth's writing, but I think I will stay away from this narrator from now on. The premise is really cool in this book, Madelyn is a Guardian that kicks some major supernatural butt!! She is put into lots of dangerous situations, and she has people out to kill her because she is a Guardian and she is immensely powerful. Loved the suspense, and how the secrets unfold. I love that this story has a lot of different supernaturals! Madelyn also has a best friend, Brady, who she has recently moved in with, but he doesn't know anything about what Madelyn does, or how powerful she is, so she does what she can to hide it from him, so he won't be in danger, but Madelyn may not be the only one keeping secrets, and both Brady and Madelyn have been kept in the dark about a lot of things. Now, Madelyn at the beginning of the book came off really ditzy and clueless, Brady and her rub up on each other and such, and it is very obvious that Brady wants her, but she just doesn't get it! There's many times in this book where people say things that are huge clues to who they are, or what they are doing, and she just doesn't pick up on it; it's like she is off in la la land, so I was annoyed with that aspect of her character. Brady is an actor, and I hate all the fan-girling involved in that, so I'm glad it wasn't too huge a part of this book. I happen to love shifter books, so I was super happy that Mates is a thing in this book, and the sex scenes are hot! I was actually surprised at how intense they were since the characters felt rather young to me, so at first I was a bit startled, but I did enjoy them. The action scenes were badass! And I found them highly entertaining. I found this story gripping, and at times really heartfelt. This story ended satisfactory, but there is still a bigger story that needs to be completed, so I'm looking forward to continuing the story. The next book looks like it deals with different main characters, which I'm looking forward to, but I also hope we get more from Madelyn and Brady. The things I could've totally done with out are Vance and the Pleasure Nymphs, I can't stand characters that are pretty much prostitutes; especially the overly sexual Nymphs, they do have some comic relief because of how ridiculous they are, but not enough for me to enjoy their parts in the story. So yeah, I'm looking forward to the next book, staying away from the audio version, and going to continue to enjoy Mandy M. Roth's books! She has some great ones!
the story was to much jumpy i did listen to it from audiobook and was .... confused
there was so much going on it was enough for 10 books .-.-
it was to jumpy to "unbalanced " a friend called it. it was like playing around but not focus on a red line . to many topics pressed in one smooth book .
the charakter where all nice , and good, but still not quiet 100% stabel.
the story itself a young girl with power growing up she dont even know was really nice, than meeting a lycan as a mate, that is hiding his true form to become her best what ever.... was nice too
her way of openly " i dont care what you all think" way somehow was nice too but sometimes overboard.
the protecting daddy power vampire and her goddess mother ...was nice too. quiet different than normal people think .
buttttttt there where so many things wrong with this story
1) a goddess - lykan 2) a goddess-vampire- power being killed by a mere lycan? 3) no explain to what the creature are ore what there power are .. yust trowing in water like here this things are alive , deal with it ore go away...??? Normaly you as a reader wants to know about new things popping up , what they are. Like her Dad , aka boss a majestic really powerfull beeing vampire protects her since .. he can do .... and no one knows how powerfull he truly is ... ?
ore things ly lycan , what are they, how life they, what to they do , what power do they have ...etc.
lot of thinks feeled like it was an Movie to a serie for fans that already know everthing and dont need to get explains for everthings.
i reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaly like the idea of this story, felt a liddle bit like cat and bones, but bigger, and overwelming .
so i hope next books get better , less compact and stuffed with new things people dont know about.
and the voice to the audiobook, wasnt the best , she rushed to much and her voice didnt always match the emotions ore topic.

I can guarantee you will fall in love with characters of this book. And I mean ALL the characters. Madelyn Mia Mason (Maddie to her friends) is 1 of the main characters of this book. She's sexy, witty and she's a young very powerful butt kicking guardian. Plus she's the only female guardian EVER. The other main character of the book is Brady Devens. He's her best friend, hunky Hollywood actor, and she shares his house with him, he's also human (or so Maddie believes.) Being a guardian means Maddie has to protect the innocents (mankind) from all the evil paranormal that lives and walks amongst the humans. By day she's a student and by night she's out and about waiting for her evil senses to kick into overdrive. But in one night she starts to learn certain secrets which have been kept from her, but more importantly are about her and her past. I will warn you now that there is graphic violence throughout and explicit sexual content. But even with those the book had me glued from page one, and it just kept getting better as I went. I found that I couldn't put it down, and everytime I got to the end of each chpt and decided that was that for the night as it was getting late, I then would talk myself into just one more, (The deadly JUST one more. lol) as I just had to know what happened next. I'm not going to go into the in's and out's of the book as that will give too many spoilers away. But this book is full of twists and turns a few tears (well for me there was) but mainly you'll be laughing all the way through especially when you meet the nymphs, (so naughty). Personally I can't wait to read the next instalment of the series to find out what happens to all of them next. Mandy M Roth has the knack to pull you into the storyline and have you feeling that your apart of it, along with feeling the highs and lows of each character.
I love a badass girl…and she is a badass girl in this one. I’ve been wanting to read Mandy’s work for awhile she works with another author that I read a lot of so I decided to try this series. My only disappointment is I have not made time for the second book. I’ll get there I promise, but I’ve discovered if I do reviews on the whole series, I can’t say as much because I don’t want to spoil it for others, so I think I’m going to review each book in series separately and before I read the next one.
So here goes. This book is awesome. If you need some badass in your life right now to lift you up and let you know you can do it–whatever that might be, this one’s for you. Madelyn is exactly how I want to be, or if I had a daughter I would want her to be. She is sure of herself, manages her own business, is caring, a fighter. Best of all she doesn’t let anything get her down. She knows when to step back and evaluate the problem and when to take action. Mandy does a great job of giving us just the right amount of vulnerability in her too.
There is so much surprise in this book for Madelyn it’s great. Kind of like real life when you don’t know what’s going to be thrown at you. She is also surrounded by amazingly beautiful people who have troubles of their own, but love her deeply and are caring. I wish we all had more of that in our lives. So the down side, there isn’t any!–Except the cliffhanger…
As you all know that read my reviews, a cliff hanger can’t get a 5 of 5 so this one gets a 4.5 of 5. I might up it when I finish the series, but we’ll have to wait and see. Mandy thank you for bringing me such a great story and I look forward to book two.
This was interesting and mostly entertaining. It started extremely well but then started meandering, becoming confusing in places. There was a lot I enjoyed and liked but too much that was annoying and just unbelievable. My reading pleasure was constantly disrupted by disjointed plot happenings. I enjoyed the world building, the heroine kicking ass and taking names, who ended up being a powerhouse stronger than the men. Unfortunately Madelyn seemed outclassed at times. She was also extremely slow on the uptake about things, quick to ignore common sense and stubborn. She forgave basically being whored out way too easily. Brady. I don’t know what to say about him. I started off liking him, knew he was different but he did one thing I couldn’t forgive. He just couldn’t be honest with Madelyn and tell her who he was. Yes I appreciated he wanted he to want him for himself but he never moved from the friend zone. His actions were those of a jealous coward. It was his choice to not declare himself to his best friend Madelyn. His jealousy caused harm to befall Madelyn. The fact he sent another man to be her lover was just too icky to get over. A hero who didn’t come across as a king in any way. Family dynamics that were thrown in thick and fast made me have to stop and get my mind straight in who was related to whom. Yes I will read the next book and hope it is written in a clearer way. Read through Kindle Unlimited.

Mandy M Roth's first book in the Guardians series is a sexy, adrenaline filled story of a woman her must face her destiny and realize that her best friend is the man she's meant to be with forever. Magic is used freely, and frequently to fight evil. Secrets are revealed and lives changed. I'm not a big fan of reading books that the main character voice being the one telling the story but listening to a book that way isn't so bad. I'm looking forward to the next installment of the Guardians series and I hope there are more stories to come in the series.
