This book is extremely frustrating to use. It only defines about half the new words in each chapter, and doesn't organize the grammatical information in any logical format. Some of the charts are nice but few of them are actually complete--it's always missing one crucial piece of information or another. Some of the exercises are useful and instructive; there is an answer key in the back, of course. Some of the information is outdated, but that's to be expected from a language book that was published in the 90's (for example, there's a dialog explaining how to send a telegram...wow).
I've been using this book in a class but accidentally bought Czech Step-By-Step at the beginning of the semester. I've looked through that one and it seems like a more logical textbook, with more extensive grammatical indexes and explanations in the back. I'll probably try going through Step-By-Step on my own to fill in the gaps left by Communicative Czech.
