One of Travel Foreman's earliest works, features Supreme Power, Squadron Supreme member Doctor Spectrum and reveals a lot more about his alter ego Corporal Joe Ledger's dark past, and the plans the crystal has for his future. 7 out of 12.
I mean it had the sex and child-murder. And probably some genitals, I don't recall.
But it seemed like a pretty standard "I kill people because of my abusive childhood and still try to be a good guy" story.
I'm not sure how much it ADDS to the Doctor Spectrum background to know that he's like this. Or why we care about Doctor Spectrum outside of his relationship to and how the crystal will eventually fight him.
I thought this book was super good. I like how Joe has a conflict within himself. My favorite part of this book was Joe talking to the crystal, and eventually giving in and accepting who he truly is, a killer. My only complaint is I wish they had another issue where we got to see Joe figuring out his powers. I like that it took 6 issues to finally have him wake, I didn’t think it was slow, but I wish there was more. Great book overall.
This wasn't on the same level as the main Supreme Power series. It's basically the story of what was going on while Doctor Spectrum was in a coma (you'd have to read Supreme Power to know that part) and it also shows Spectrum's life story through an odd inner dialogue. This series basically takes place "off camera" during the Supreme Power series.
I liked it, but it seemed a little superfluous and considering how great Supreme Power is, this didn't really fit in.
I'm making space on my hard drive so I want to read things before deletion. This held my interest but, even if you want to know all about Straczynski's Squadron Supreme, reading this is hardly necessary. I read it as individual issues and I have to say I found the tribute to Bob Haney (co-creator of Metamorpho) at the end of one of the issues more affecting.
Pleasantly surprised with how good this was. Initially, I was only going to read the volumes written by JMS but quickly discovered doing so would leave the Supreme Power storyline incomplete. While this isn't essential to the greater narrative, I found it to be an excellent backstory of Joe Ledger.
