Through the Glowing Lands…

Far in the future, Apocalypse had come and gone and had left the world in ruin…

On what had once been called the Emerald Isle, families scratched a meager living from the blasted earth, carefully avoiding the forbidden patches of land that still shone with an eerie light. And young Joanna Grady and Flynn O’Connor dreamed together of the ancient Ireland they knew only from stories: a green land of myth and magic, of bold kings and queens, and of witches and terrible giants.

Then Joanna’s father betrothed her to Muldooney, an ignorant pig farmer. In despair, Joanna fled to the one place where no one would follow—into the Glowing Lands. There the fabric of time itself had been torn, and Joanna plunged through a Gateway into the lost Ireland—and into the lair of Cormac the Wolfking.

Seeking Joanna, Flynn dared the Glowing Lands and the shifting curtain of time. But his way led him to Tara, where the usurper ruled from the true king’s throne. And while Flynn, too, was swept up in Cormac’s struggle for his crown, Joanna fell deeper and deeper under the Wolfking’s enchantments…

Time has passed since The Great Devastation which accompanied the visit of The Apocalypse to the blue and green misty isle that is the jewel of the Western World.

In Tugaim Joanna Grady and her family eke out a spartan exisitance, determined not to succumb to the old ways which led to the downfall of the Letheans - humans whose fraility and decadence had brought the Apocalypse to Ireland all those years ago.

Remnants of the lives of the Letheans linger on, as do reminders of the devastation: The Glowing Lands that border Flynn O' Connors home are forbidden territory to all but the keepers of the secret...The Gealtacht. High on a neighbouring hill, houses the mutants unfortunate victims of a terrifying past. Then there are stories of machines which fle or helped a man plough a field in a matter of hours. But Flynn and Joanna are united in their love for an even more remote time, recorded in ancient Lethean book that the O'Connors hide from prying eyes: an ancient Ireland of myth and magic, of kings and queens, witches and giants. It is only when Joanna is threatened with conjoining with Mulrroney,, an ignorant pig farmer, that the truth of the legends is proven at the centre of the Glowing Lands lies the gateway to the kingdom of Corma Mac Airt, Cormac Starrog. The Wolfking. Flynn is devastated by the disappearance of his lover, he vows to find a way to find her and bring her back - if that is possible. Accompanied by Amairgen, Leader of the Keepers, Flynn finds himself at the gates of the Bright Palace, home of the rightful king. But an usurper sits in the Sun Chamber, The Wolfking is in exile. There is no sign of the errant Joanna for she has entered the Wolfkings lair and found herself a reluctant ally in the fight to regain the throne. And there are other contenders for the kingdom of Tara, not least of which is the Erl King, a monstrous figure whose terrifying reputation casts a terrifying shadow across the land

This book is the first in the Wolfkings Trilogy is virtually a reworking of the third in the series 'Rebel Angel'.The remarkable similarity does not detract from the as rebel Angel was so enjoyable and the Wolfline princes are such attractive characters.

This book was weird as hell. Beastiality ran rampant, but in a magical way. There was was a weird magic system in place as well.

Minus the animal thing, this book had an interesting story, but there were several instances where things looked bleak but everything magically worked out with no explanations.

The characters were ok, but Joanna and Flynn were on the annoying and cliché side.

The ending was a little heartrending, and I rather liked it, but it did seem very rushed.

I read this as a pre-teen after finding it at a Goodwill for $0.99. I distantly remember enjoying it, but oh how the years have changed my perceptions. This is one of those type of books that all of us should reread; books that we in our youth found original, unusual & imaginative should be revisited to see how your mind with a bit of experience under its belt now processes and interprets. It's quite fun!

Even though I now give this book a 2/5 rating I won't be overly critical of my adolescent self because WOLFKING does in fact have some good, solid ideas and an interesting setting. WOLFKING blends fantasy with a twist of sci-fi to transport the reader from an apocalyptic future into a magical past while fusing elements of young adult, romance & pulp fiction. An example of the good: an ancient curse that dooms any human to sit on the throne of Tara is avoided by the sorcerers in the employ of Tara weaving a counter-spell that fuses the nobility with animals through magical & selective breeding and therefore circumventing the curse. Cool, right? The bad: extreme cliche characterization, deus ex machina plot devices galore & Mary Sue to the rescue all the time every time. I'll not write an essay of examples, but here is a good one (deus ex machina style): Flynn, one of the "good guys" of the story gets lured & trapped into the Wicker Man on Beltane to be a human sacrifice by being burned alive along with a dozen or so trapped animals. Mind you, he's locked in the ribcage of the thirty foot tall effigy not only by physical means, but also by enchantment. The Druids are performing the ritual and on the verge of setting all ablaze when Flynn decides to simply concentrate really hard on what the Druids are chanting to know how to break the ceremony and free himself. Important to note is that the Druids are chanting in an archaic & virtually extinct language that the people that are participating in the ceremony do not even understand, but Flynn the time-traveller not only learns the language, but also grasps the intricacies of the ritual all by paying extra attention. And how does he break the spell and free himself you might ask? By saying "No." You have got to be shitting me. The Druids are reciting the question to the effect of "is the sacrifice ready" or something like that and Flynn pipes up "No!". BOOM, freed!

Needless to say my eyes became rather fatigued after that because I went into spasms of eye-rolling, so I was unable to finish WOLFKING. I had other problems with the book as well, but I was fully 400 pages invested in it when this happened and going to push through hoping that the elements I did enjoy would get some more attention, but after that there was no going on. DNF.

I guess this is a good reminder to me that I just don't like the dark fantasy genre much.

For every good or interesting element this book has it has something else in it (several painfully long rape scenes, bestiality, horrible depictions of torture, a lot of ableist and fatphobic language to describe characters, etc.) that makes me want to put it down and not continue. I did finish this book, but I did not enjoy reading it. Will not be checking out the sequels.

(Also the author has got to do more research into spiders before writing about them)

im not sure why this took me so long to read, it was incredible. Woods’ voice is so damn unique and enjoyable. She has a way of writing the loving and hopeful and disturbing and traumatizing in a way that I really connect with. I’m looking forward to rereading the sequel, I accidentally read that before this one but thankfully it didn’t hurt the experience.

All right, it's been a few years since I've read this, so maybe I was too young back then (probably), but I just thought this book was weird. A few too many gory sexscenes for my tastes, to be completely honest. It's not that it was bad, per se (I mean, I finished it), but not for me.

I read this years ago, but I just remember finding the storyline so creative. You can definitely see the blend of various religious beliefs that combine perfectly to make an entralling storyline that makes you want to read it over and over again.

While there are certain problems, most noticeably a deus ex machina applied once too often and the entire civilization based on bestiality problem, this is a well written book that probably deserves it's reputation as a forgotten classic.
