The death of Yamanami looms over the Shinsengumi as they try to carry on their duties. Ito suspects something unusual about the death and decides to find out the truth for himself. Meanwhile, Tetsu and Suzu meet for the first time since the Ikeda Inn incident, but it's not exactly a happy reunion! Tetsu is happy Suzu's still alive, but Suzu accuses Tetsu of killing his teacher and swears revenge. And it won't be something as quick and easy as death!
Today we have learned that this is not a series that should have been read out of order because, woops, took me a while to figure out anything. I do like that pretty & sick character tho I'm sure he's a dead man walking.
-2023- Yup, still so very fucking good. Really good story and character development with Ryoma and Tatsu. And with that nice bomb with Souji. And I love the weird tension between Hijikata and Ido. Must be some good fanfiction somewhere.
Also, damn Suzu, you crazyyyy.
-2018- I liked this one a lot more than volumes one and two. It was a bit slow in the beginning and middle, but the end really picked up. I liked when Ito's true ambitions were revealed, along with Hajime's. I appreciated that Suzu's true desires also came to light - I am relieved that his bodyguard was not Yoshida, as further steps into fantasy land would diminish my enjoyment of this series. I'm still not really following Ryoma's place in this series nor Tatsu's desire for wanting a gun. But maybe, now that I FINALLY have the next volume of this series, I may get some more answers before browsing Wikipedia.
I'm still not quite understanding the gist of this series, but I feel like I got a bit closer with this volume. I really should have finished watching the animated series first (since the book are officially a sequel), but oh well... The major points in this storyarc are the establishment of community issues - both that of sickness and its effects within a closed population, and of political divisions. Honestly, this was mostly just precursor to the larger storylines, but now I feel like I can go into the next volume with some idea of how the story could progress.
