-2023- Well, I didn't hate it this time! I liked it actually. Now that I've read up a bit on the history, I understand why a lot of things happened in this series. The violence at the end was still a bit much, especially compared to the rest of the series, but I'm not as shocked on this second read.
I still am a little baffled with Suzu's insane/overtly sexualized character. It feels very strange compared to his character in the show. But it doesn't bother me as much - unsure if age or time or exhaustion has changed me.
I missed the Shinsengumi, but I realize why this volume is important. I hope one day the last two volumes of this series can be translated so I can finish it. Or maybe I can look for them online. Turns out I still love this series.
On to the next set.
-2018- I hadn't known that this series continued for 13 years and I finally found this on amazon for a cheap price. I get it in, I reread the whole series, only to find that this is the worst one yet.
The plot meandered too much and had no real direction. It was a real stinker considering the cliffhanger from the last volume which wasn't revisited at all. I don't like the odd character change of Suzu anymore - he's acting like some over-sexualized insane courtesan, and so his credibility for revenge has decreased. I liked the addition of an internal spy with Ido, but it didn't seem to go anywhere. I was bored with the focus on Heisuke and Ryoma. Literally nothing stimulated me in this manga and it was a struggle to finish.
I'm not a stickler with violence, but the random scene at the end of this novel was borderline ridiculous. Why was it all saved up for the last few pages? It shocked me so much that I couldn't even feel sad for the death. I'd normally be excited to read the next manga, but as it probably won't ever be translated, I'm content stopping here and remembering how good the first series was.
I found this one rather confusing but still very good besides that! Still, since Okita didn't get much lines and he's the main reason I read this series it was a bit of a letdown.
