I'm a huge fan of The Beatles, and of the film Yellow Submarine. I think a book that intelligently gave a background behind the making of the film and the reception it has received would have been a worthwhile effort.

But this messy, unfocused book by Dr. Robert R. Hieronimus (whose other credits include two books on how to pick winning lottery numbers!) is definitely not a good effort. It comes across as a messy pastiche of gushing fanzine articles strung together with an irritating lack of focus.

I don't doubt that the author knows every bit of trivia and information about the making of the film. He just doesn't present it in an interesting way. The book even looks ugly, with excessive bold faced words and italicized call outs galore. It actually took me over three years to finish the book because of my irritation with the way it was set up.

Example: Do you really need to read an in-depth analysis of the differences between Ringo's dialogue in each of the comic book adaptations of the movie to that of the final dialogue of the film? That chapter is excruciating.

Spare yourself a lot of pain and frustration. Watch the movie. Put the soundtrack on.
