It's the first time they've been to their ancestral home. Life there is like nothing they've ever Highland ponies, treks across the moors, and then they see The Horse. Patricia Leitch (July 13, 1933 - July 28, 2015) was a Scottish writer, best known for her series of children's books about a girl named Jinny Manders and her wild, traumatized Arabian horse Shantih, set in the Scottish Highlands. The 12 books in the Jinny series were published between 1976 - 1988 by Armada. They are currently in reprint by Catnip Publishers. Two more of her novels, Dream of Fair Horses (1975) and The Horse from Black Loch (1963) have been republished by Jane Badger Books. Leitch has also written under the pseudonym Jane Eliot.
Patricia Leitch's writing is as magical as ever in this Scottish tale that is as much folklore as pony story. Not a traditional "pony" story in the way that other 1950s/60s writers were, but so beautifully written, and compulsively readable.
Easy weekend read. I enjoy Scottish folklore and mythology and loved the water horse element of this story. I have enjoyed all of the Patricia Leitch pony books so far and hope to find more.
I do like this little book and only give it fewer stars since it does pale a bit against her other (Jinny) series. The characters in this one didn't stand the test of time as well for me and though I loved the magical aspects, the plot turns were tough to buy at times. I did love the little illustrations in my version! As always, she excels at writing horses and her settings in Scotland have wonderful depth.
