About the author

Mykhailo Mykhailovych Kotsiubynsky (Ukrainian: Михайло Михайлович Коцюбинський), (September 17, 1864 – April 25, 1913) was a Ukrainian author whose writings described typical Ukrainian life at the start of the 20th century. Kotsiubynsky's early stories were described as examples of ethnographic realism; in the years to come, with his style of writing becoming more and more sophisticated, he evolved into one of the most talented Ukrainian impressionist and modernist writers.
During the Soviet period, Kotsiubynsky was honoured as a realist and a revolutionary democrat. A literary-memorial museum was opened in Vinnytsia in 1927 in the house where he was born.

About twenty novels were published during Kotsiubynsky's life. Several of them have been translated to other European languages.

In general, all five works included in the collection have a strong air of Soviet motifs. This is understandable, since the book was published in Soviet times.
Yet, if we set aside the aforementioned features that are inherent in most works by Ukrainian writers published by the Red government, a very interesting pattern emerges. The Ukrainian peasant, who, thanks to the same red government, was shoved into a standardized wrapper, appears to us in different colors. From a sheep shepherd in the Carpathians to a farmer in Bukovyna, nuns in Zakarpattia, inhabitants of the Steppe, or Tatars in Crimea.
It is very interesting how it all looks together. It's a kind of multi-subculturality.
The collection is full of various metaphors and artistic tools that are usually hidden either behind artistic descriptions or somewhere between the lines.
The skillful psychological prose is impressive.
The described relationships, figures, and archetypes are impressive.
I am impressed by the poetry.

Загалом, від усіх п'ятьох творів які увійшли до збірки, дуже віє радянськими мотивами. Цей й зрозуміло, видана книга за радянських часів.
Все ж, якщо відкинути вищезгадані особливості, які притаманні більшості творів українських письменників, котрих видавала червона влада, відкривається дуже цікавий візерунок. Український селянин, який завдяки все тій ж червоній владі, запхали у стандартну обгортку, представляється нам у різних барвах. Від пастуха овець у Карпатах до землероба Буковини, монахинь Закарпаття, жителів Степу чи татарів у Криму.
Дуже цікаво, усе це виглядає разом. Така мульти-субкультурність.
Збірка майорить різноманітми метафорами та художніми інструментами, які ховаються зазвичай або за художніми описами або десь тиняються поміж рядків.
Вражає майстерна психологічна проза.
Вражають описані відносини, фігури, архетипи.
Вражає поезія.
