This really goes hand in hand with the previous Ladybird books I have commented on "THE STORY OF OUR ROCKS AND MINERALS". If that was the main book then this was the introduction. For me it introduced me to the ideas of what goes on underground (years later a friend of mine studied Vulcanology, in itself a fascinating idea but the fact he got to visit some of the most incredible and alien locations on the planet was astounding).
The book is rather basic although fun to read. I guess for me there are years of nostalgia in each page and for anyone who has looked at a Ladybird book knows they have a very distinctive presentation. I guess they were very much a product of their time and with the age of the internet and connected devices I doubt we will see such things again. Which is a shame as I still can remember saving up my pennies and looking through the titles to see what I was going to buy next (or ask for a christmas or birthday present). Ladybird books have a huge place in my heart - even if I didn't realise it until I discovered them again just recently.
