...she is a female reptile and a member of a multi-species elite team in the most powerful independent army in the galaxy. While taking a leave of absence for some well-earned rest and recuperation with her two best General Sally, or ‘Sah Lee of the Aarnth’, Commander-in-Chief of the army, and the human Mark, Mike’s destiny as heir to the throne of one of the largest empires in the galaxy catches up with her, along with the realisation that if she ascends to the throne, where her word is law, she can change things so that she can get back to living her own life. That can’t be that difficult, can it?Does this mellow Mike? Her best friend, Mark, introduces “I apologise for Mike, she’s an arrogant, foul-mouthed, egotistical, childish, spiteful, obnoxious, megalomaniac with delusions of adequacy.” Maybe she could do with some self-improvement.Join Mike, Mark and Sally and their friends in this fun and entertaining adventure as they discover that sometimes, things don’t happen quite as easily as they think they should.First Of The First is an epic military science fiction adventure with plenty of action and suspense and is sure to captivate readers as Mike, Mark and Sally and her friends fight for the survival and freedom of the Herassan Federation using their wits and courage to guide them through a web of intrigue and dangerReview from Dr Susan : The continued adventures of Mark and his fascinating alien friends are great sci fi with a quirky British flare. Mike is hilarious; Mark and Mike together are a riot. I look forward to reading book 3.

I write military space opera from the depths of the English countryside. My books have characters you grow to know and care about. The stories contain some violence, I guess you would expect that from military science fiction, and some swearing too, plus a good sprinkling of humour.

Being English, I’m too modest to say much about my writing, so I’ll let my readers speak for me. These are quotes from some of my Amazon reviews you can find on my amazon.com page:

“… one of the best character driven SciFi novels that I've read…”

“There's a real spark and zest to this novel, along with sharp observation”

“I've been reading sci-fi for forty years, some heavy, some light. But one thing I realized is that it all boils down to a good story. And this is a good story."

"I laughed out loud in places and thoroughly enjoyed reading this entertaining book. I look forward to more from Andrew Maclure!"

"…a good story teller plying his craft."

“Absolutely a great book and fun to read. I have read hundreds of sci fi story's and rank this as one of my favorites.”

“Couldn't put it down. Read it straight through until I had to go to work in the morning.”

“The interaction of all the teams members reminded me of the kidding I took and gave when I was in the Marine Corps. I recommend this book as a fun read. I can’t wait for the next book.”

I gave the first book a 5 star review with the caveat that I had to get around two implausible scenes. I quit reading this book because of such a major implausible scenario so inconsistent with all the capabilities that the author had previously ascribed to the super AI. Spoiler alert. The super intelligent and super capable Billion year old AI could not detect thrown or hurled through the air objects before they exploded and could not transport them elsewhere. This dispute that it had unseen drones in the area that should have noticed movement by persons or machinery causing the tossing. The super tech drones could not detect the presence of the balls nor detect or suspect their explosive nature. The could not penetrate the walls or floors of the hall to detect hidden passages or any people in them. Further the conduct of our hero not staying within touching distance of the person he was sworn to protect in this exact situation where such protection was anticipated and needed. The authors only comment that low tech sometimes defeats high tech shows awareness of the implausibility but does nothing to cure it. The author needed beta readers. The implausibility destroys all the further part of the book about how the abducted person is apparently recovered. I don’t know how the book ends as I quit reading and I won’t be finishing the series. It is a shame as I liked the characters and the story up to that point.

I gave the first book a 5 star review with the caveat that I had to get by two implausibilities. This book had such an implausible scenario in conflict with description of the abilities of the billion year old super AI that could not continue to read the book.

Sci fi milatary

Liked the story line from both novels in the series. The Characters are fun and likable and deadly in combat. They kept me Entertained. Looking forward to the next novel in the series. If you like the story that get you into the hands of the characters this is a series for you.

Very good book, excellent character development. Good mix with action.

I really enjoyed the great character development in this book. The main protagonist has come along way since the first book in the series. The supporting cast is likable and enjoyable and you get to see them develop as well Mike and Mark are great, throw in Marks snarky artificial intelligence and you have a winning team. Sally is great also but she stands apart because she is a leader. The action scenes are well done, not as many in the first book this book takes a different path. The science fiction is great with all the fantastic whizbang technology, makes me wish I was there. The book is a fun fast paced red, pick it up now I have to find something else to read while I am awaiting the next one.

Are We There Yet?

So...I wanted to give this book a 5 just because of the great premise but had to tutor the a 2 because of how freaking boring it is. Given super powers, super spaceships, super friends and all you can do with all of that is act like you're in a Jr High lunchroom. The juvenile dialogue is tedious at best and the constant yakking about everyone's feelings is a snooze fest. Anyway

Wrong title and cover

I think there has been a mistake. The content of this book is actually the third book Edge of the Universe, not First of the First.
If you go past cover it shows the title.
Excellent book though. Now got to try to get the real First of the First.

Not what I expected, and slow to start, but really good. Ending was different than I expected. Looking forward to more.
