Bullies Beware, Tom Novak Continues His Quest To Do What Is Right!!

This second book in our look into Tom Novak's adventures continues the thrilling ride of an undercover agent doing what he must to keep everything Right. He has some great colleagues and special contacts he uses when needed, working in a Covert Policing Advise team to find those in charge of terrorist attacks in London.
Tom and a teammate, Buster, go forward to capture the Major responsible for the murder of many Muslims in those attacks. Their travels take them across countries and through many tough situations, as they know this Major does not deserve to live freely, and must pay for his actions.
An outstanding adventure with a man who hates any wrongs done to others, but even more so when someone he knows is hurt... Exciting characters, scenes you feel yourself involved in, and a great plot makes this thriller a very entertaining read!!!

GOING ROGUE (A Tom Novak Thriller Book #2) by Neil Lancaster is the latest thriller featuring Tom Novak. This book can be easily read as a standalone, but there is some character overlap and it adds to your enjoyment when you read both. I read them both in order and fell in love with this protagonist and author!

Tom Novak was a child refugee, a Royal Marine and an undercover member of an elite army force. He was raised with a strong moral compass and sense of justice. He is highly skilled physically and mentally. After his exploits in Going Dark, he is now a member of the Covert Policing Advice Unit known as “the team”. They specialize in undercover work to disrupt those with power in the military, judiciary and/or civil service who use their positions corruptly.

This story starts with a domestic terrorist attack in London. A mosque is targeted on the Eid to maximize deaths and destruction.

DS Tom Novak is briefed that the bomber was captured and refused to talk, but he did turn over a prepared statement. He is an ex-British soldier living on disability and claims to be a member of the Aryan Defense Force. He states that the group will not stop until all Muslims are expelled from Britain.

As Tom and the team begin to investigate, they find there is missing Semtex and their best option to finding it is to get someone into prison with the bomber. Tom has to move into darker and more dangerous territory for answers. Will Tom and the team be able to stop these terrorists before it is too late?

I am so excited to have another fabulous protagonist and thriller series to follow. Mr. Lancaster had me at book one, Going Dark and now in book two, Going Rogue, I have added this series to my must reads list. Tom Novak, all his team members and his colleagues add up to a great cast of characters. Mr. Lancaster has written a fast-paced thriller that builds in intensity and tension throughout.

I highly recommend this thrill ride!

I'm a little afraid that this doesn't sound positive. It should because I enjoyed the book. I shelved the post for a day and tweaked it to help. But, if anything, I think I sound less positive than I did before. So here's what this post is supposed to say: Great first part, really strong second part, with a couple of hiccups. Hopefully, that's what you get out of it.

Following his exploits in Going Dark, DS Tom Novak has got himself a new assignment. He's part of a task force investigating corrupt public figures—politicians, police, military, judiciary and whatnot. This is a much better fit for him than his old job, with a supervisor that he won't have to battle with (much)—as this series progresses, I really look forward to spending more time with this group.

When a new domestic terrorist group begins attacking Muslim targets, the nation goes on high alert. It's clear that the terrorists aren't amatuers—they likely have military training and it's possible they have assistance from someone in the government or police as well. Enter Novak's group (every officer in London is looking to get into the hunt for the terrorists, but this team has a legitmate interest).

The man who carried out the first mission is in prison and he's really the only lead anyone has into the Aryan Defence Front. Novak enters the prison as a Slovenian veteran under suspicion for the murder of a Muslim to gain his trust and hopefully an invitation to enlist. I really can't describe more of the plot than that, as much as I want to—you need to see what happens from there.

The ADF is a small, but very well organized (and funded) group looking to create and increase divisions between Muslims and Non-Muslims in England—leading to Whites vs. Everyone Else with public riots, mayhem and the rest until supposed Right Thinking and Superior Whites kick everyone else off the island. Something about this group seems easier to believe than similar groups in other novels that I've read in the last couple of years—I can't put my finger on why that is, I'll just run with it and enjoy it.

There are basically two parts to this book (oversimplification warning) as there was to Going Dark—the undercover work and then what Novak has to do unofficially, using very un-approved methods. The undercover work portion of the book is just great. Yeah, he has to work a little faster than he did in Going Dark, but the short time-frame to get implanted with the group felt legitimate enough (I really hate it when UC officers are put into an inner circle within days of starting). In fact, this part being fast-paced really added to the tension and heightened the drama. Sadly (speaking for the characters' viewpoint, not the readers'), as effective as the police are—they're not enough, so Novak ends up Going Rouge to mop up with a little help from his friends that helped him so much last time.

I really have no complaints at all about the part where Novak "goes rogue" to get his man. However, the parts of the book focusing on his undercover work were much more interesting—they're gripping, taught and seem more realistic. Given that, watching Novak and his allies take the rogue/extraordinary steps to get the job done—it is so hard to talk about this without ruining anything—was a blast. I did (and do) wince at what happens to one of his allies, it's a relatively minor form of torture, but it literally curls my toes to think about.

My biggest complaint is in the dialogue—and it's not that big of a complaint, I should stress. There were two or three occasions where it seemed to me like that a character essentially repeated themselves. I'm not sure that I was clear there. An example (using the dullest dialogue ever):

George: I watched this TV show last night.
Liza: Good to know.
George: After my evening meal, I viewed a television program.

Sure, people do this all the time in real life, but 1. They are dull to talk to; and 2. I want fictional dialogue to be better than real life (if for no other reason than: editing). Also, some of the threats made by the bad guys toward the end seemed a little lifeless. This is their chance to shine, put some oomph into it.

Then again, if you're reading a thriller for the sparkling dialogue, you're probably looking in the wrong place.

Again, nothing against Tom Novak, Action Hero; but Tom Novak, Good Policeman is more up my alley. But either Tom Novak is a real pleasure to read—Going Rogue is filled with great action, a strong protagonist with some good supporting characters, and villains you really want to see thwarted and punished. This is just what you want in a thriller.

I do think that Going Dark was a slightly more effective and polished work, but I won't hesitate to recommend this one—and I'm already eager to see what Novak is Going to do next.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this from the author in exchange for this post and my honest opinion. I sincerely thank him for this.

Highly, highly recommended

I absolutely loved Going Dark, and Going Rogue. I really am hard to please when it comes,to choosing the right book to indulge myself through. So you can imagine how good these books are when I say I was completely engrossed. You can just imagine the author in his previous role because these books just ooze espionage and surveillance. Highly, highly recommended I just can't wait for the next instalment. I enjoyed the plot, the characters, the Sharp wit and the depth of each character not just the main one.

#2in the Tom Novak series but can also be easily read as a stand-alone.

Tom Novak works in the Covert Policing Advice Team, searching for those responsible for terrorist attacks in London.

They are looking for McEwan…..this takes Novak and his team on a real adventure and a race against time..

This is a real action packed thriller with realistic, likeable and believable characters and with the great, gripping plot this is a fantastically entertaining read. I can thoroughly recommend it.

Tom Novak is definitely back and is part of a team looking into bombings in London. These are vicious attacks on the Muslim community, time is of the essence as things seem to be escalating.Tom once again goes undercover to try to gain access to the group and get valuable info for an arrest.

Having recently read Going Dark, I was eager to reconnect with Tom in the second book in this series. It is again packed with action from the very outset as the attacks take place and as the team is gathered to discuss the best way to deal with the situation.

Tom is a cold character and in some ways this makes him a very good character to read about, given his cold outlook he does have a strong moral compass that has been instilled in him. If you have read the first book then you will understand this, but if you haven’t then things are alluded to in the story.

The undercover work that Tom takes on puts him right in the thick of things, and they cvould very easily go wrong. As many bases are covered as possible, but the risk of having his cover blown is always there, never more so as when the story takes a further development and the risks become more apparent.

The story progresses at a good speed and I was soon drawn into Tom’s world, it is dangerous and makes for great reading. The author weaves Tom this way and that throughout story and brings back some characters from the previous book.

Buster is a character that features along side Tom, he is Tom’s wing man if you like. The banter between these two is so good and had me smirking several times.

Once again the author has created a fast paced action read that puts his main character right in the middle of the action. Tom is tough yet fair, doesn’t like loose ends and is a brilliant character.

There is a snippet right at the end of the book that is a teaser for the next book and it has already got me eagerly waiting to see what happens next with Tom Novak.

If you like crime and thriller reads that delve into the dangerous underworld of society where there are no rules, then this is a series ytou really need to pick up. Going Rogue is a fabulous read and I would definitely recommend it.

Over the last few weeks I have been mainly reading police procedurals or books which tell “life stories” pulling plot threads together into a surprise reveal rewarding the reader for engaging with the lead character and their predicament. This is not a complaint as these are very much the type of stories I enjoy. However, I also like a tale which gives a bit of high tempo/adrenaline filled action – one that keeps the pages turning themselves as the chapter flies by…one like Going Rogue!

The book opens with readers watching an act of domestic terrorism unfolding. We are with the instigator and we see him placing and priming the explosives which will target his victims. A direct attack on Muslims as they went to prayer, targeted only because their religion was not that of their murderer.

The aftermath of the tragedy sees Tom Novak called into action, he is a member of the Covert Policing Advice Unit and a highly effective member of the team. Novak is skilled in armed and unarmed combat, has tactical knowledge, is fluent in several languages and is prepared to work undercover to bring down the bad guys. In this case the bad guys he needs to speak with is in prison so Novak needs an alter-ego, a convincing back story and he also needs to get himself arrested.

I am reluctant to give too much detail about what happens in Gone Rogue as this is a brilliant action adventure which I’d strongly recommend you read. Novak manages to infiltrate the group which planned the bombing but he discovers this was just the first in a series of planned events. Now the challenge is not just to bring down the perpetrators but ensure no further bombings can be allowed to take place – in this he will have mixed success and the increased pressure on all those involved becomes increasingly clear. There comes a tipping point in the investigation when Novak’s inclusion in the team becomes an issue – he hasn’t shared one vital piece of information which he should have disclosed (but in doing so he may have missed the chance to be involved in any form). As a consequence of his failure to reveal key information Novak is removed from the investigation.

Novak will not accept being benched – particularly as he knows where to go to get to the head of the organization which planned the bombing. Left with only one option Novak and his colleague, Buster, are Going Rogue and heading to Eastern Europe to take down the culprits themselves. A move full of danger and one which will not go smoothly.

As I indicated at the start of my review, this is a full on action adventure and a terrific read. If you have enjoyed the Scott Mariani (Ben Hope) thrillers or Matthew Reilly’s Scarecrow books then I know you would enjoy Neil Lancaster’s Tom Novak books. Novak is more human and less bullet-proof than Reilly or Mariani’s heroes but his adventures are just as compelling.

Book 2 does not disappoint!

Firstly, if you haven’t yet had the pleasure of reading Neil Lancaster’s Going Dark, read that one before you hit Going Rogue. The storylines are separate, but I definitely think it’ll be more enjoyable to follow the development of the characters and the progression of how some of them interrelate if you read the books in sequence (and you’ll better understand some of the things mentioned in Going Rogue).

After reading Going Dark, I really couldn’t wait for Book 2 to arrive. And I wasn’t disappointed, it’s another great page-turner. Just like in Book 1, Going Rogue starts with tension right out of the gate. I love this—it immediately hooks you in and, believe me, you’ll have a hard time putting it down.

So, what makes this series stand out? For me, it’s simple—the main protagonist, Tom Novak. He’s complex, engaging, enthralling, and, above all, intent on doing the right thing. His character really shines through, and Neil Lancaster’s writing style seems to perfectly capture Novak’s calm, but focused, personality.

Overall, this is a gripping and fast-paced thriller with plenty of adventure, as well as moments of horror, violence, dread, and poignancy. Be prepared for a real rollercoaster of a read, but one that’s kept down to earth by the everyday banter among the characters. The storyline is also very topical, relevant, & believable in today’s geopolitical climate.

But I think the main thing you’ll come away with after reading this book (and its predecessor), is a strong sense of pride in Tom Novak. He’s become my favourite international man of mystery, and I seriously think he’s the hero we all need right now.

And, no spoilers, but the ending already has me (im)patiently awaiting Book 3!

Whatever you do, always do right…

(*I was lucky to be selected as a beta reader for Going Rogue and asked to provide feedback to the publisher. However, I was not required to write a public review of the book. And I did not receive payment of any kind for reading it. I am sharing this review only because I wish to do so. Don't miss it!)

Another Hit another roller coaster action Storyline.
This is the second Tom Novak story and I’m so glad that I got to read it and as good if not better as the first book “Going Dark” and I simply loved it!
A real gripping story and this continues with Tom Novak who is part of specialist group called “The Team” or better known as “The Covert Policing Advise Team” The story starts with a “BANG!” latterly and with Tom going undercover to try and gain urgent and important information on homeland terrorists who were carrying out attacks in the streets of London. The question is, can Tom and his team get to the bottom of the plot and who is funding these acts and why? All they know is that many innocent people are being killed and it threatens the very fabric of our society and must be stopped.
An Ex Major called Mc Ewan who is responsible for the attacks is first captured and imprisoned only to later escapes by those above him and taken to Ukraine where Tom aided by Buster go against orders to bring him home to justice. But things do not turn out well or go to plan.
Going Rogue is a roller coaster ride which you can’t put down and makes a who leads the terrorist group here refreshing change to read a book cantered around England, London, a hunting lodge near Midhurst just outside of Guildford in surrey an area I know well and grew up which made it even more interesting. The story continues to the Ukraine and it has a ending worth waiting for plus leads nicely into something else?
I liked Tom’s colleagues and contacts especially “Pet” “Buster” of course and many others along the way and the words of Tom’s foster father are always relevant but none as much as “Tom you know what is right, always do right, boy” and Tom always does!

Stands alone, or can be read in series with 'Going Dark' which I did.
Fantastic plot, with some great characters making a return from the first book, along with some new and interesting ones. Personalities and relationships are explored to new depths.
This story takes us into the dark and sinister world of an extreme far right group set on bringing carnage and violence to the streets of the UK and beyond.
Now part of a specialist disruption team, Tom is the only man who might be able to put a stop to this 'next level' group.
Slick, easy to read and full of action; you'll be left wanting more.

This is the second in the Tom Novak series. I haven't read the first book, but, I don't feel that I've missed a chunk of storyline nor have I missed out getting to know Tom Novak as a character. Therefore, in my opinion I will say that Going Rogue can be read as a standalone.

In Going Rogue we open up with a storyline that is very current and topical given the political climate and religious hatred that we see portrayed in the headlines. We get to delve into the psyche of extremists hell bent on getting their so called revenge against those that they see have done them wrong.

Tom Novak is catapulted straight into the heart of the organisation, well not so dramatically catapulted but he volunteers to infiltrate into the system and goes undercover. All his training and previous knowledge come into the fore when he tries to gain the trust of these evil group.

Along the way things change dramatically and results in Novak making decisions that could lead him further into danger. You won't want to put this book down until you get to find out the conclusion. And, with Buster and the team once again backing up Novak it's definitely a gripping story.

Can I just add that the combination of Novak and Buster is a great addition to this series. The banter these two give each other in situations that some would consider dangerous is perfect. It's add a bit of light relief to an otherwise very tense storyline.

Thank you Emma for my spot on the blog tour and thanks to the publishers for my gifted digital copy.

The second in the Tom Novak series does not disappoint. The story is a page-turner, and there are characters of every type (heroes and villains). I liked how realistic Novak was, as he sometimes skirted the edges of morality and legality (in his line of work, I would think that would not be unusual). I had a few issues with the timeliness and perspective, as they were a little slipshod, but those didn’t ruin the book for me. I would recommend reading Going Dark (the first in the series) just to get the background and keep the characters straight. For more thoughts, please visit my blog at Fireflies and Free Kicks. This review was written based on a digital copy of the book, and all opinions are my own.

Every once in a while, I love to pick up a book and discover a new action hero. For me, 'Going Rogue' was just such a book. I read the synopsis for 'Going Rogue' and it certainly sounded like just my kind of read. A fast paced action thriller with a hero, who is going to do his best to save the world. A sort of Hollywood action blockbuster type. Anyway I grabbed a cup of tea, settled down on my comfy spot on the sofa and began to read. After having just finished reading 'Going Rogue', all I can say is 'blooming nora' (not the words I wanted to use but you never know who might be reading). I absolutely ADORED reading 'Going Rogue' but more about that in a bit.
I liked the character of Tom Novak, who has been compared to Jason Bourne and Jack Reacher. I have read books featuring all three characters and I have to say that Tom Novak beats the other two into second and third place respectively. Tom Novak is your dark, brooding, complex, rugged looking, multi layered personality, action hero that a lot of women and some men fall for. As is often very common with action heroes, Novak isn't without his own problems. He has his own demons and his own problems which he is battling. He got himself into a spot of bother in the previous book which left a cloud hanging over him but he was cleared and free to resume his work. Novak has a moral conscience and he strives to do the right thing even risking his own health and wellbeing in the process. All I can say is budge over Jack Reacher and Jason Bourne, there's a new kid in town.
It took me no time at all to get into this book. In fact, I was hooked just from reading the synopsis alone. Once I started reading that was it, I was away. I found it practically impossible to put the book to one side for any length of time. Reading this book was the equivalent of watching a Hollywood action movie. I was enjoying it so much that I just couldn't stop reading. The book wasn't exactly glued to my hand but it might as well have been because it travelled everywhere with me. I just had to know how the story concluded and whether or not Novak managed to finish the story relatively unscathed. The pages turned over with increasing speed as my desperation to find out what happened grew and grew. I would say that I flew through the latter half of the book. I soon reached the end o the book, which I was gutted about. As with a good action movie, I just didn't want this book to end because it meant that I had to say a temporary goodbye to my new favourite hero.
'Going Rogue' is really well written. This author has been compared to Lee Child and Robert Ludlum but having read books written by all three of the authors, I have to say that for me, Neil Lancaster is the better of the three authors. Neil certainly knows how to grab your attention from the start and he certainly draws you into the story. The action in this book started from the moment I opened the front cover and the fast pace didn't let up throughout the story. Certain parts of the story did make for brutal reading and made me wince on one or two occasions. I felt so completely wrapped up in the story that I began to interact with the book. Yes before anybody starts, I know this is a fictional story but I find that if I enjoy a book to the extent that I enjoyed this one, then I tend to 'live' the story as if it were real. I kept feeling as though I should leap in to the story and protect Novak, not that he needed protecting.
Reading 'Gone Rogue' felt like being on one hell of an express speed, unpredictable and scary rollercoaster ride and then some. Whilst reading this book, I found that I kept wanting to hide behind a cushion or read through my fingers as I feared what was going to happen next. If you want a book that will get the adrenaline flowing, set your heart racing and will leave you breathless then 'Going Rogue' is the book for you.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'Going Rogue' and I would definitely recommend this book to other readers. I will definitely be reading more of Neil's work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

Despite being book 2 in the Tom Novak series this novel works perfectly well as a stand alone. Doesn’t mean I’m leaving it at that though. I’m off to read book 1 whilst eagerly anticipating book 3.

The blurb for this novel really caught my attention but in reality it doesn’t do the roller coaster ride of a novel complete justice. The whole time I was reading this it played like a film in my head – intense and fast paced and I don’t think I let out a breath while reading.

Move over Jack Reacher!

The plot grabbed my attention from the very first pages and didn’t let go until the very end. I personally cannot think of anything worse than being thrust into a setting and having to become part of a group containing people whose ideals and morals you despise. Just this particular plot-line had me turning the pages like a crazy lady and when you add in the additional twists and turns the whole novel is just addictive.

The character of Tom (Dave undercover) is written so cleverly that despite claiming he lacks a normal level of emotion, his moral and ethical stance is clear. What comes through is his passion for his job and to protect people where he is willing to risk his own safety to do the right thing. His character has been written beyond just another action hero. Yes he’s tough, cool as a cucumber and incredibly handsome (or so I imagine) but he is a deep and intelligent character too. I also loved the character of Tom’s team mate Buster as I felt he was the one who kept Tom grounded and provided him with hope and support.

The theme of the novel is very current too, in a world where there is still a divide over race, religion and colour it’s important to bring the impact to people’s attention. Although I never felt it was written with a moral intention, I still think the events and dialogue are shocking but realistic.

Overall I loved this novel and it was so much more than I expected. Tom Novak may just be my new action hero.

Tom Novak is back! and then some!

I recently read the first book in the series, Going Dark, in preparation for this tour so was very much looking forward to this, and I wasnt disappointed at all!

Feeling even more action packed and with more of an adrenaline rush than the first (somehow), Neil Lancaster takes us, and Tom 'Rogue' as he attempts to infiltrate a terrorist group, hellbent on targeting Muslims in the UK.

When the infiltration takes a turn for the worse, Tom and close colleague Buster, take matters into their own hands...

An adventure that takes us to Eastern Europe, this is another cracker jack thrill ride from Neil Lancaster, as the indomitable, emotionless machine that is Tom Novak sets about his prey... Not without a few bumps in the road of course!

Entertaining, easy to access, and an author with great concise knowledge of his stories, it feels real, authentic and it's absolutely relentless.

The story barrels along at break neck speed, never stopping for breath.

Blistering, exciting and with a jaw dropping, cliff hanging - WHERE IS BOOK 3?! ending..

If you havent got involved with Tom Novak yet, you definitely should.

Move over Jason Bourne, Jack Reacher and all the rest. There is a new sheriff in town. Tom Novak.

Highly Recommended

Serinin birinci kitabi gibi ikincisi de surukleyici. Tom Novak'in Superman olmasi disinda konu ve olaylar guncel. Serinin 3. kitabinin da gelecegini belirtecek sekilde -to be continued- olarak bitiyor. Tom Novak serisi iyi bir Hollywood film serisi olur gibime geliyor. 3. kitapta Tom ile Pet arasinda bir sey olur artik diye dusunuyorum :)
Hizli okunacak, kafa yormayacak, cheesy aksiyon macera arayanlar icin birebir.

Just as good as the first

Took a little longer to grab me, than Going Dark, but when it did, I couldn’t put it down. Give yourself a chunk of time as you will want to start and finish in one sitting. Glad of the ending as that means there’s more to come.

Meh.
It felt like a sequel to a film, which tried a bit too hard to live up to the blockbuster.
But, that being said, it was still an enjoyable read, with not too much thought required - which is exactly the kind of read I was after.
