Inglewood #4

Engaging Sir Isaac

Rate this book

She swore she would win the baronet’s heart in order to break it, never dreaming she would lose her own in the process.

Millicent Wedgwood will never obtain her rightful place in Society, which means she will never have an advantageous reputation, marriage, or fortune. All because Millie's sister eloped years before. But there is a chance to rise above that disgrace if Millie will take part in a dare. If she can win the baronet who insulted Lady Olivia, and then shatter his heart, she will earn back her position in Society with Lady Olivia’s sponsorship.

Sir Isaac Fox returned from war with one less arm and a weight upon his soul. Where once he easily charmed Society, he now prefers to remain quietly alone at home. With a failing estate to manage, Isaac is determined to be more responsible and less foolhardy, which leaves no time for romance. Certainly no time for the infuriatingly enchanting Miss Wedgwood.

When Millie realizes her game has put her own heart in jeopardy, she risks losing everything she has so desperately sought to replace in her life. And though Isaac refuses Millie's advances, he cannot deny her charm. But falling for Miss Wedgwood would mean reentering society and losing the peace he has found since the war. Can they find a way to heal their hearts together? Or will Millie's deception ruin them both?

This is the fourth book in the Inglewood series and can be read as a stand alone, Sweet Regency Romance.

I can see why this book can be controversial. There was a lot of scheming, lying and general evil at play, but I enjoyed it anyway. 😈

Millie's prospects have been ruined after her sister eloped with a mere barrister instead of marrying an heir to a dukedom. Her mother introduced her to Lady Olivia, who has the power to bring her back to Society. However it turns out that Lady Olivia is pure evil and demands that Millie humiliates Sir Isaac in return for the favor. As you can probably imagine, Sir Isaac is way too lovable for Millie to hurt him, which gets her into even more trouble.

Millie annoyed me at times and I didn't like the deception. Luckily it turned out better than expected so despite a little bitter aftertaste it was so far the best book of the series.

I was not prepared for the game that would be played in this story! I don't normally enjoy head games between characters, but this one worked for me- because I could see the conflict in Millie as she is a puppet in the hands of her parents and Lady Olivia. I was rooting for her to make her own choices and yet I could see how she felt like she had no choice, especially when social blackmail is involved. She has a wonderful growth arc in the book as she is befriended by Isaac's group of close-knit friends in spite of his mistrust and learns to be stronger than she knows.

Isaac is going through his own struggles as his wartime experiences have left him a very different man- brooding, grumpy, and tormented. I loved how his sister and friends that in turn starred in the previous books in the series don't just make meaningless appearances, but are an integral part of the story and continue to be the primary supportive relationships in his life. The chemistry between he and Millie ebbed and flowed as they both had hidden or private sides that they had difficulty sharing, but eventually grew to know the genuine person behind the facade.

The tension grows steadily and it really felt like a nail-biter as Lady Olivia gets more ruthless and Millie is torn as she becomes more loyal to her new friends. It was fun to have Olivia's brother Lord Neil befriend Millie in a platonic way and help her surreptitiously, since he played the part of the villain in the first book. It set me up to be thrilled when I learned that he will have his own book!

I so enjoyed this book. Sally outdid herself with this one. What is it about a broken man that appeals to a woman's heart strings. I am glad I only fall in love with ones in books. Isaac was a good leading man. He was gruff with a reason and such wonderful apologies. I loved reading these two falling in love. I love how Britton doesn't fall into the old formula, she creates her own endings and outcomes. I loved how the problems in this story were handled. I love that everyone grew and learned and became better people. Just loved this one a lot. I was so hoping this one would hit the spot and it did! Now to wait for Neil's story!

I was completely drawn in and engaged in this story from the beginning. I was listening to it while trying to prep for a camping trip and loved having it keep me entertained while gathering all the supplies needed and packing. It was a great diversion.

I was pleasantly surprised by Millie's character. I could feel the uncertainty she had in joining in with some schemes for other ladies all in the name of helping to raise her family in society. Or rather try to overcome the scandal that was attached to her family years ago. She separated her personal feelings for the schemes and decided she was doing it all for her mother and helping and pleasing her.

I loved the back and forth struggle we see Millie struggling with. She did a great job playing her part and yet not. My opinion of her kept increasing the further into the story I listened. Although other characters didn't know what struggle she was going through. I loved that amidst her trying to scheme for others, her true characteristics came through and she found some friends in an unlikely manner.

Sir Isaac was a character that I've been interested in learning more about after seeing him in previous books. His inner battle of self worth was very well written. The way that the author wrote both his and Millie's feelings of inadequacy and insecurities was well thought out. I loved it and really connected with the characters because of it. I liked the change in POV between Millie and Isaac.

There were some pleasant surprise with other characters, especially Lord Neil. Very pleasant surprise there. Now I'm very intrigued and looking forward to reading his book. Go Lord Neil! You'll have to read the book (or listen) to understand my cheering him on. I loved him though!

Isaac and Millie's first meeting was pretty humorous. I laughed out loud a couple different times during that scene. The narrator of the audiobook did a great job with that scene. And I couldn't wait until their next meeting to see what was going to happen and Millie's reaction. Ha! *Imagine me chuckling deviously*

I thought their building friendship was great and their chemistry and developing love. *happy sigh* It was another great addition to the Inglewood series and one that I can happily recommend to my book loving daughters and friends!

Content: Clean.

I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

You know why I love a disabled/scarred military hero so much? When the protectiveness is unleashed. They’ve battled attacking hordes and stared down death itself, good luck to whatever seeks to harm the object of their affection. Also, they’re often grumpy and reclusive, which I just love seeing getting poked at. Sir Isaac Fox was this and more with his achingly fabulous arc and “The more no-nonsense they are, the harder they fall” moments. A missing limb is no hinderance for sweeping Millie off her slippered feet, and he rose to the occasion of lady’s champion and never looked back.

Let’s just get out of the way that, on the flip side, I didn’t see much change in our Miss Wedgewood, because to start she was not one thing or the other. I wanted her to either be full-on conniving, shameless schemer that finds redemption or just a guilt-tortured mouse that finds a way to shake off the shackles herself. And, while lovely, she was somewhere in between, just her parent’s and villain’s pawn and, though eventually finding the bravery to make her own choices, head-scratching as some were, she was in general a bit tepid.

So then, besides our deliciously moody Isaac, the stars of the show here were, once again from this beloved author, the set up and progression choices. For me, this premise could’ve worked as a novella, and the main reason why it never lagged in this full format falls squarely on the baronet’s broad shoulders. Really, only way he was getting an HEA was if she literally showed up at his doorstep and broke through his defenses by infiltrating his circle of childhood comrades. Since he was going on this reluctant journey of healing and romantic dummy rehabilitation and his reactions were so on point with his characterization of natural protector, I was all in. He is brought to apologize often, which I always appreciate in my romance. That and just, once his trust is earned, such an unshakeable ally. Luckily, Millie is bad enough at the conniving part and brings enough lightness into his life, that I’m not mad about it. In fact, I’m the opposite of mad at this charming story that shows how the right person will promote change and purpose in you without even trying and then further propel you into the best version of yourself because you’re willing to adapt and sacrifice for them. I know, a few pouty, swooning “aww”s were pulled out of me.

The set up for Lord Neil’s reforming was so entirely effective, so ready for his comeuppance dues to be well and fully paid. Adore this series and narrator.

Content notes: Kissing Only. Mention of affairs and mistresses. Hero is disabled veteran suffering from ghost limb and PTSD. Mention of past struggle with alcohol. Mention of unwanted advance/suggested tryst.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the Inglewood series and Engaging Sir Isaac was no exception. I’ve been especially looking forward to Sir Isaac’s story ever since the series began. The romance that unfolded was quite the game as Millie becomes a puppet forced to uncover information to humiliate Sir Isaac in order to raise her family in the ton’s opinion, a game that becomes more and more difficult to play the higher the stakes and the more she befriends and eventually falls in love with Isaac, who himself is struggling to overcome the effects of the war that robbed him of his arm.

Admittedly it took me longer to enjoy the plot than the others in this series considering the premise was founded on social blackmail, deceit, and using Isaac, nevermind Millie found herself in quite the impossible situation. Despite this, I still enjoyed the story and found that beginning the book in such a way only left room for Millie’s growth as she strives to do what’s right and make her own choices. Isaac also grew the closer he and Millie became as he heals from his past experiences and finally opens himself up to love. They had a lovely relationship that gradually deepened as they learned to trust each other and help one another overcome their seemingly insurmountable obstacles to achieve their happily ever after.

The characters were well developed and the unfolding plot always interesting; I especially enjoyed it after Millie confided in Isaac and they became a team against the seemingly hopeless situation. I also adored the secondary cast of characters from the previous Inglewood books and had so much seeing them again after their own stories.

Overall, Engaging Sir Isaac was another wonderful, romantic, and thoroughly read from Sally Britton. I’m sad the series is almost over, but I’m excited to not only reread my old favorites but see what she has in store for us next.

The voice actor truly brings the characters to life, transporting you straight into the Regency era. I felt like I was right there, witnessing Millie and Isaac's captivating journey unfold.

I was quickly sucked into this one. Millie is pressured by her mother to try and reclaim their place in society and to do so, she has to align herself with the conniving Lady Olivia. As Millie sets out to accomplish the tasks Olivia has given her, she soon realizes she has gotten in over head and sees no way out.

I thought this had a fun premise and I was curious to see how Millie was going to accomplish her tasks. I like that things didn't play out how I expected. I liked the natural friendship that developed between Esther and Millie. I loved Millie's maid and friend Sarah (can Sarah please get her own book??? She needs to be a heroine of her own story and get her own HEA!!). I thought Isaac was great, he had been through so much with the war and was trying so hard to reclaim his life. I love a story when the heroine shakes up the heroes world, and Millie certainly does that. They have a fun up-and-down relationship with lots of fun moments between them.

Overall, a fun and engaging read! Thanks for the recommendation, Deb!

Sadly this wasn't as beautiful as the author's other book for me. I didn't feel the connection between Millie and Isaac and the plot seemed overly constructed. The obstacles that Millie saw as unsurmountable, were overcome in the end with one conversation between Isaac and Olivia's father. Everything fell neatly into place in the end, even Millie"s mother's character made a 180-degrees-change.

It kept my interest and was well written, but the heroine's internal battle, fears, and assumptions, in regards to her mother's demands and the "mean girls" in society on the one hand, versus her own integrity on the other went on too long. It would make a good read for a younger person who finds such battles ongoing in her own life, but for an old person like me, that internal conflict got a little tedious.

Finding Isaac🐺💘

Engaging story about Isaac🐺 Fox, a permanently maimed army officer who is also a baronet. He wants to marry Millie💃💋 ,the granddaughter of an Earl and Great granddaughter of a Duke, but she has issues, too, none of them really relating to the fact that Isaac🐺 has only one arm💪. Isaac🐺 thinks it's about his injuries, though, and The fact he's not wealthy or of higher station.
However, it's really all about Millie's sponsor, Lady Olivia👺, and her quest for a perceived revenge she must have against Isaac, using Millie💃💋 as a pawn.

This is a very well written and plotted out Regency Romance💕. Well above the average novel.

Engaging Sir Isaac is a five-star reading experience. Sally Britton is a premier Regency Romance author. As the fourth book in the Inglewood Series, it can stand alone; however, I recommend reading the series in sequence for the best reading experience. One character, Lord Neil, is a villainous character introduced earlier in the series who appears once again in this story and who reluctantly reveals honorable traits in this story. His character takes on added depth when viewed with the perspective of his earlier introduction. Protagonists from all previous books in the series sometimes play significant roles in this story as well, adding much depth to the narrative. The twists and turns taken in this narrative kept me glued to my iPad from start to finish. Well done, Sally!

Thank you to Sally Britton for my complimentary audiobook. All thoughts and opinions are my own. This is the 4th book in the series, but may be read as a standalone.

I have always enjoyed regency time period novels. Other authors have made it seem like an ok time/place to live; some people in the the Ton seem to be a bit self absorbed, but I never thought they were very mean.

And then I listened to Engaging Sir Issac.
Holy Cow, the games, back stabbing and truly horrid people that live in this book are making me reevaluate the time period. But I suppose there will always be people who must put others down in order to feel important.

I really enjoyed the growth and development of Issac and Milly. Two broken souls coming together while trying to outwit a truly nasty woman. Their attempts at flirting had me laughing out loud. I would love to see the hammock scene played out in real life.

Marian Hussey did an incredible job with all the voices (as usual) on the audiobook. Her voice is very pleasant.

I am looking forward to listening to the final book in the series. Lord Neil is a complicated character and I cannot wait to see how his story plays out.

I expect a lot from Sally Britton's books, and the author continues to deliver with well-developed characters, a plot with some twists that's set at a good pace, dialogue that flows naturally, attention to those little details of Regency life, and a great HEA. I found it easy to connect with this story. Sir Isaac Fox and Millicent Wedgewood are both very likable characters with problems. I wanted a romance for the two of them. Lady Olivia makes a great villain! This story wraps up nicely with a sweet epilogue. I am looking forward to reading Reforming Lord Neil. I highly recommend Engaging Sir Isaac to clean/wholesome romance readers, to readers of Christian romance, and to those who love all things Regency. I obtained my copy through KU.

I enjoyed being back with Silas & Esther as Isaac's story unfolded.
.
I'm enjoying how unique each book in the series has been. It's been fun to get to know these characters. I do wish Isaac had been a bit more the focus of his book, though, especially the post-war PTSD aspect that was alluded to.

This was a lovely, clean read. There was a real, eminent conflict, but it progressed and morphed in a satisfying way. It was something where it could have easily become a secret that someone was keeping for no good reason, but the characters were smart and realistic in their choices and in their reactions.
I really liked the relationship building and the quirkiness of the characters.

This was a wonderful audio book to listen to! I am loving this Inglewood series.

I enjoyed getting a peek into all that Sir Isaac was dealing with after being back from the war. He actually adapted fairly well to having only one arm. It was the inner scars that emotionally took a toll on him, whether through nightmares or horrible headaches brought on by the stress of being in large groups.

Poor Millie was really in a bind! She found herself indebted to Lady Olivia, which was definitely not a good thing. I wondered how she would be able to get out of the precarious position that her mother had forced her into when she connected Millie and Lady Olivia.

I loved the way these two interacted with each other and the growing attachment that happened throughout the story, even when anything true between them seemed hopeless. Both of these characters were caring individuals and I loved their romantic journey.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

This is the fourth in this series, and it was great. I’ve really enjoyed all the stories in this series. The author does a great job of creating engaging characters and intriguing plot twists to keep me reading and not wanting to stop. Isaac has shown up in other books as the stand-offish ex-soldier who has not quite acclimated back to liking polite society. When he meets Millie, trespassing on his land, he is suspicious of the fiery stranger. When he meets her at the marquesses house party, he is leery of her even more. Anyone who is friends with the detestable Olivia can’t be any good. But as Millie keeps trespassing into his life via his friends and their families, he begins to get to know her and is intrigued against his will. Meanwhile, Millie is faced with a whopper of a moral dilemma as she tries to placate and do the bidding of the evil Olivia and get to know Sir Isaac. But the more she gets to know about the man, the more she likes him and can’t bear the thought of ever hurting him, as Olivia wishes her to do to him. Anyway, it’s a nice boiling stew of tangled hearts, nefarious motives, and spicy twists and turns that made for a delightful reading feast. Loved this.

If you are a fan of Carolyn Miller's books, then this book is for you!

Being that this is book 4 out of 5 in a series, and this is my first time hearing of this author, I am saddened. I usually like to read books in order, but this author provided such interesting banter, that I may have to backtrack and pick up her other books too! I also really enjoyed the ending. She went a different way than was expected and I ended up liking it even more then whatever my brain had come up with. I was also very impressed by the author's handling of Sir Isaac's PTSD from fighting a war and how he was able to begin his healing process.

My biggest frustration with this book, is that it is book 4 out of 5 in the series. While I do not feel it was necessary to read the other books first to enjoy this one, the author in numerous places references characters in the previous books that I had a hard time following. A few additional sentences when a previous character was mentioned would have made all the difference. (This is why I brought up Carolyn Miller as well. She writes in similar series fashion but does a good job of giving you just enough pertinent history on an old character to make their name in the current book understood.) I think if Ms. Britton is able to perfect this skill, her books would be all the more well rounded. There were a few other picky editing items that could have been cleaned up, but otherwise a truly lovely read!

I won this book in a blog giveaway but was not required to leave a review. All opinions expressed here are my own.

Another entertaining read by Sally Britton. I would say the first in this series is my favorite but I loved reading Sir Isaac’s story. He is a broken man after the war and bedding to find healing. But he is a kind man that jumps in head first to help others in need. We get to see more of all the friends from the previous books. Sir Isaac is the last to find love. The object of his affection is Millie. Her personality is harder to come to like but she has redeeming qualities even if she nearly breaks Isaac through the book. Her refusal of him rankles as we are invested in Sir Isaac and his ultimate happiness. Next in the series is Lord Neil’s story and I am anxious to read it. Each story we see more and more to like of Lord Neil and this book is no exception. He is being set up as a likable enough fellow.

Another fantastic book in the Inglewood series! I have been waiting for Isaac's story ever since he was introduced in the first book and it was worth waiting for! Sally makes her characters so human and relatable that you feel like you know them and you can't help but feel engaged in their happiness and in their story. Isaac and Millie start out at odds with each other and there are so many obstacles in the way of them finding a happily ever after, but their journey of discovering each other and what is important in life is charming and delightful. This is a must read for any fan of regency romance!

I received a complimentary copy of this book but am voluntarily leaving a review of my own opinions.

Update after listening to the audiobook.

This is even better on audio. I really enjoy the narrator for this series. She brings these stories to life. Millie and Isaac are great people and I enjoyed their story more this time around than the last.

Every time I read a new book in this series I want to start from the beginning and read them all again. I wish I had the time to do that right now. I just love this series. I am so glad we finally got to read Sir Isaac's story. He was just as wonderful as I always imagined he would be. Millie is definitely in a hard spot, but she is a wonderful person underneath it all. This was a great story and it was so good to be back at Inglewood.

3.75 rounded up

This was a fun read about Sir Isaac's story. I was happy with the turn of events... At first I was worried that the girl would betray Isaac and misunderstanding would ensue, as happens so many times in these types of stories! But I was very happy how their relationship turned out and Isaac was every bit the hero you would expect! I've been reading these in order, there are 5 of them. You really wouldn't need to read them in order, but they do follow each other slightly.

Another Sally Britton clean Regency that I really liked. I enjoy this series so much. This was another winner in my opinion. I did get frustrated with Millie on occasion. And I had a little trouble with Isaac in a spot or two. But overall, I liked this one very much. Again, I highly recommend listening to the audiobook. The narrator for this series is top notch.
