The Mage Hunters Box Set contains the first three novels (with possibly more on the way?) of the excellent Mage Hunters series, written by Andrew C Piazza. The three novels are: Shards of Glass (2012, updated 2019), Resurrection Day (2018), and the Intron Code (2019), excellent novels all.
The series is set in today's world, albeit with one important difference: magic is mainstream. With use of magic, though, comes abuse of it as well, by some. Fortunately, SWAT leader Cass Wheeler and her team are around to put a stop to those who would use magic for diabolical purposes. The three novels follow Cass, Dredd, and their team as they encounter all manner of magical baddies and find ways to deal with the threats. What they encounter over the three novels will bring them to their breaking point and could spell doom for the world as we know it. Are the eccentric but venerable heroes up the task?
The Mage Hunters series really breaks new ground when it comes to genre. The books are equal parts urban fantasy and police action-thriller, with some horror elements and humor thrown in for good measure. This potent mix of genres is one of the most effective I've seen, and I applaud author Piazza for his expert skill in concocting such a dynamite blend.
Piazza also brings the action! Over the course of the three novels he has written some of the most exciting, manic, and breathless action scenes I've ever read. The combination of exotic magic with a good ol' shoot-'em-up makes for incredibly unique opportunities when it comes to action. Piazza takes full advantage of this, with stellar results. The shifting PoV is also a nice touch. It can take a little getting used to, but it fits in well with a book that is already quite unique.
The Mage Hunters series is such well-written fare, with great characterization, exiting action, and awesome genre ideas. I'm happy to hype these books, because I know you will love them, and are in for treat when you pick them up!
Be sure to check out Piazza's other books as well. One Last Gasp is an incredible WWII horror thriller, and Strange Days is a delightfully eclectic short story collection.
The books in this have, as you might expect, three storylines. The first is a tale of a paranormal SWAT team, the second is a prison riot where the good guys are imprisoned, and the third is trying to stop the Big Bad, as it were.
Cass and Dread are really great characters. It's easy to see their motivations. ANF they are definitely good guys. I wouldn't call these humorous books, but there are humorous exchanges. The third one has a few more funny bits, which I like. I liked Jolly, Mickey grew on me, and I was moved when Lysette redeemed herself. I want more of these characters.
