I read this book as a part of the CIPP/US course from IAPP to prepare for the exam.
From the exam preparation standpoint, this book is the most valuable tool among all the materials provided by IAPP. The chapters are dense, but they do a great job of relating the laws, regulations, and rules to high-profile real life examples of cases or consent decrees. The summaries at the end of the chapters give a good overview, but it is ultimately up to the reader to develop effective ways to conceptualize the material. One thing that really bothered me about exam preparation is that there were questions on the exam not covered in this book or other preparation materials. However, I relied strongly on this book to prepare for the exam and I passed the exam on the first attempt.
From a privacy professional standpoint, this book is not meant to be (nor can it be) the end-all-be-all of privacy law in practice. It is designed to be a primer to allow the reader to issue spot current issues and anticipate developments. Sometimes this book reads more like a history textbook and others it feels like an regulatory authority preamble. Overall, it sets a good foundation for the reader to build upon.
