I read this book as a part of the CIPP/US course from IAPP to prepare for the exam.

From the exam preparation standpoint, this book is the most valuable tool among all the materials provided by IAPP. The chapters are dense, but they do a great job of relating the laws, regulations, and rules to high-profile real life examples of cases or consent decrees. The summaries at the end of the chapters give a good overview, but it is ultimately up to the reader to develop effective ways to conceptualize the material. One thing that really bothered me about exam preparation is that there were questions on the exam not covered in this book or other preparation materials. However, I relied strongly on this book to prepare for the exam and I passed the exam on the first attempt.

From a privacy professional standpoint, this book is not meant to be (nor can it be) the end-all-be-all of privacy law in practice. It is designed to be a primer to allow the reader to issue spot current issues and anticipate developments. Sometimes this book reads more like a history textbook and others it feels like an regulatory authority preamble. Overall, it sets a good foundation for the reader to build upon.

While I am not a privacy professional, I have a strong interest in privacy. I firmly believe that you should limit how much data can be collected by the government and corporations, as well as how much data is needed for the service required. This book is an eye-opener as to the practices and litigation surrounding data privacy in America, and gives a good glimpse as to where the future is going in this field.

Most people do not realize how much data they give away freely. Is your Facebook on private or public setting? Do you post your every location (check-in) on your various socials? How frequently do you fill out marketing surveys? All of these are ways the government and corporations collection your data, and how you give it away with little to no consent.

Furthermore, I am seriously questioning why some of the materials in this book are not taught as part of basic course in government or civics. There were so many facts that should be common knowledge. Do you know what the role of the FTC or FCC is in privacy? What exactly is a Credit Reporting Agency (CRA)? How do you fix incorrect data on your medical record?

I realize this book is DENSE and contains a ton of information that is state or field specific. However, everyone should read parts of this book to better understand data privacy and how it impacts your life.

Decent primer on Privacy, but in an area of the law, especially an area like Privacy which is evolving at a rapid pace, a static book is simply and ultimately insufficient for anything but a cursory intro.

Another book for work. Interesting, but not a page-turner, per-se.

Seriously - organize the info better. Dense, repetitive and seriously poorly organized. ew.

New edition on the way!
This book was very helpful. Provided me a nice framework on which to hang the hot mess that is U.S. privacy.

About as exciting as a survey on privacy laws can be.

I thought this was pretty good as a prep book. At times it was a bit too dense or got too far into the weeds on certain topics, but it made me feel confident going into the CIPP exam.

Made me into a certified privacy professional. And I learned a ton. No complaints here.
