Worth a read. The crux of it all is compare your current rates to other providers and switch, or use this to negotiate a better deal with your current provider. A lot of common sense but also a lot of useful tips. I found the section on life insurance especially helpful as I hadn’t known much about that.

I’d refer back to the specific chapters again next time I look at comparing rates. Includes specific info on 9 common household bills: energy, telco, car & home insurance, health insurance, credit cards, petrol, groceries, life insurance, and home loans. However, the book doesn’t provide much info on what to do if you’re stuck with a provider, such as being on a phone plan with device repayment, or still have over 80% on the mortgage (I guess there’s usually not much that can be done in these circumstances).

Also includes info on how to negotiate with your provider (has a handy script for this), and how to deal with complaints. Glad the author includes info relevant to all states in Aus, not just the eastern states!

As mentioned, the method of getting your bills down is essentially the same for each type of bill, but it was at least motivational enough for me to make some enquires. Funnily enough, we spent 30 mins on the phone after reading the section on energy & gas bills, and would have saved about $1000 just like the cover said!

Easy to read and good humour, just like the Barefoot Investor. I would recommend this book for all Aussie households.

Immediately saved on my energy bill by following the simple steps in the first major “bill kill” and am empowered to continue. Although I read from cover to cover, I still feel intimidated dealing with insurance and big banks so have yet to kill those bills.
Heaps of easy scripted advise ... great for helping those sleeping beauties to wake up a little easier 😉

A very repetitive book with only a few pieces of advice. In sum: shop around often for better deals because prices vary wildly and change quickly; ask for price reductions; complain when necessary; and use comparison websites.
