Mother, English teacher and eco-conscious author, Serena Lane Ferrari writes books that encourage children and parents to engage with environmental issues.
Nature inspires her stories, and she fills them up with magic and fun. Her young readers learn about climate change, pollution and activism, but they also get inspired by friendship, optimism and hope.
This short little book is about the plastic patch. While the book does deal with a real world issue, it does not become preachy. The action is good, and I enjoy the fact that it is two females helping each other.
A beautifully illustrated and gentle story that subtly teaches children about plastic pollution in the ocean and its danger to sea creatures. What makes it work so well is not just the charming illustrations (the coral reef is magical!), but also the parallel storyline of friends helping each other when in trouble -- first with the little Tally Turtle rescuing Ara the lobster from a fishermen's trap and befriending him, then the lobster later returning the favour when Tally gets caught up in plastic. The factual section at the end offers opportunities for children to reflect on the story and learn more about how we can all do more to use less plastic.
Tally is a sweet young turtle who lives in the Pacific Ocean with Granny Turtle and her friend Ara, a lobster she saved from a fisherman’s trap. Granny tells Tally she’s now old enough to go on adventures and suggests she and Ara explore the coral reef ... but they must be watchful of danger. The worst, Granny warns, isn’t the sharks or jellyfish or even the speedboats, but the plastic patch.
Tally and Ara reach the reef safely and enjoy playing with the fish and crabs there, swimming in and out of the corals, but Tally gets carried away and suddenly discovers she’s lost. She spots lovely colors ahead and drifts toward them, hypnotized by their beauty and ignoring Ara’s frantic warnings, until she becomes tangled in a plastic bag. She twists and turns, doing everything possible to free herself, but Tally is trapped in the plastic bag.
Thankfully, Ara has remained nearby and quickly uses her claws to shred the bag and free Tally. The two friends carefully swim away, glad that they escaped the plastic patch, and crawl onto the beach, where Tally thanks Ara for saving her and suggests they spread the word about the danger of tossing plastic into the ocean. Ara agrees, and the two friends scratch a plea into the sand not to use the ocean as a garbage can.
Serena Lane Ferrari’s gentle tale introduces children ages 3 – 12 to the problems of plastic ocean pollution without frightening them too much. Giorgio Vallicelli’s illustrations vividly bring the ocean and its creatures to life, showing young readers how plastic endangers ocean residents, but softens the scariness by ensuring a friend is nearby to rescue them. The combination produces a teaching tool that children will not only want to read over and over, but soak in the drawings and imagine themselves as fish or crabs or even a young turtle named Tally and her lobster friend Ara.
This book is very beautiful and has a very important message. The story is about a little turtle and her lobster friend. One day they go to explore the coral reef, it is awesome and full of beautiful creatures, but there is a plastic patch that is more dangerous than any shark. The little turtle gets lost and ends up wrapped up in plastic. Thankfully the lobster friend is able to cut the plastic with its claws and set the turtle free. They end up going to see the sunset on the beach and write down a very important message on the sand, asking humans to stop with pollution. The story is very nice with a clear and important message. The illustrations are gorgeous, colorful, bright, very professional and beautiful. I strongly recommend this book for any child.
Ferrari's Saving Tally is a wonderfully captivating book. The story, the illustrations, and the overall message make this book one that should be in classroom and home libraries around the world. The beautiful illustrations make the message and story come to life in a way that even the most reluctant reader or listener is both entertained and educated. As a former science teacher my mind went wild with all the possibilities for intergrating this book into the curriculum at various levels and in multiple units. As a current homeschool mom, love how I can use this book to teach about pollution, conservation, recycling, the ocean, marine life, and more. The fact that this book also has resources at the end makes it even better.
Ever since Tally saved a young lobster from a fisherman's net they have become fast friends. This book has beautiful illustrations. The storyline is exciting. It also shows what they call a "plastic patch"and in reality this is the plastic pollution invading the oceans of our lives. Now to the story. They both now lived with Grandma Turtle who sent them out on an adventure together. Be very careful of the plastic patch. It is very dangerous. They were having fun and arrived at the Rainforest of the Coral Reef. What did it look like? What did they do? You get to listen/read and find out. Happy underwater exploring!
I love this story! With having young grandchildren to read to, this is a must read! This explains the dangers to the sea animals when we throw plastic bottles into the ocean. This book will definitely help shape the thinking of children to be more cautious about throwing trash just anywhere. I loved the illustrations in this book, I can’t wait to read it to my granddaughter.
When Tally, the sea turtle, is old enough to venture out into the sea, she discovers colorful fish and different creatures along the coral reef. But, floating below the surface is a plastic garbage patch and soon Tally is entangled in it. Will she be set free by her friend? Children will like the tips at the end on how they can do their part to help keep plastic out of our oceans. Beautiful illustrations add so much to this sweet story.
This is such a wonderful book! It’s illustrations are gorgeous and the story is so important! We need to teach our children how to stop this crazy plastic use and save our planet. After reading this book, my daughter reminds every day to use less plastic ‚because it’s not good for the animals in the ocean‘ (her words). Great book!
This kind of book, I think, is ideal for teaching young children about the problems facing our planet at the moment. If we don’t teach them now, what hope has anyone in the future. This is a great book, very easy to read either by young children or to young children. Thoroughly recommended.
A fun way to introduce kids to environmental Hazzards. It is child friendly and easy to read. The Illustrations are very cute. A cute book about friendship. Loved it. Highly recommended.
I loved this engaging story about a turtle and her friend lobster. It teaches a valuable lesson (saving Tally and our Ocean) and provide gorgeous illustrations to enjoy along the way. My son is excited that we already implement the extra facts at the end about plastic pollution!
