Desdemona's life changed the moment she left her body for the first time at age fourteen. Nearly two decades later, she is forced out of her comfort zone again when she takes responsibility for her sister's destruction of a fan made of feathers she thought was harmless. That is, until their owner comes to claim her soul and servitude as compensation for what he considers a crime.
To top it off, her sister gets into more trouble than she can cope with and the only one willing to save her is Desdemona. But sometimes the curses we place upon ourselves are the ones that bind us most tightly.
Rosetta M. Overman lives in Central North Carolina and got her start at writing for the public on the eBook community Wattpad. She is terrible at writing these biographies, but invites you to ask questions if you like.
Desdemona discovers at the age of fourteen that she is not quite as human as she first believed—actually she’s an astral projector, able to transport between realms. This was a fabulous continuation in author Rosetta Overman’s Game of Gods fantasy series, this time taking us on a journey filled with fallen angels and demons into the underworld, Purgatory and hell. I’ve enjoyed all of Overman’s previous books in the series, but I have to say, this is my very favorite one. The writing is intense in the horror sequences after Desdemona goes to save her sister and finds herself Lucifer’s prisoner, and as she’s forced to call on her host of protectors, including frenemy/will-they-won’t-they hottie Ambrose (yum), we’re treated to some intense fantasy writing. If you love demons and paranormal romance, this one is a treat!

The story starts off with a young Desdemona meeting Nixxon, a watcher who tells her that she has the ability of astral projection. Years later, her younger sister Davhie accidentally breaks some sacred feathers and all heck breaks loose as Desdemona goes through trial after trial to save her sister.
As a newcomer to this genre, I have nothing to compare it to, but what I really enjoyed was how the author places the supernatural among everyday life. I also really enjoyed the description of the different worlds that Desdemona's astral planing has us visiting.
Desdemona' relationship with her sister was exquisitely detailed and the fast-paced portrayals of good versus evil made this a page turner for me. It made me more curious about the genre and I will be be checking out the Rosetta Overman's other books.
This was a great book, caught my interest right away. The main character, Desdemona, was easy to relate to. I found myself agreeing with her a lot. Aside from Desdemona, I have to admit that I really liked her dog who is actually a very special wolf and is supposed to be very fierce but turns out to be a complete wimp.
If you like paranormal or fantasy love stories, I think you will find this book to be well worth the read. You can tell the writer has done her research!
I absolutely loved it and would highly recommend it.
This isn’t my normal type of novel- but the first chapter grabbed me. A girl who can astral project and sees a demon and meets a fallen angel? Yes, please! I will admit the opening pages leave the reader with more questions than answers and depending on the reader that can be good or bad. The MC, Desdemona, is an interesting character, compelling and intelligent. Her friends call her demon and she’s a writer and blogger. I was a little confused as by page 29 she is owned by some sort of being, but that gets cleared up eventually. The MC’s little sister is an annoying and young character. But she is written to be and so fulfills her purpose, though with what eventually happens to her I wish she was a little more fleshed out. I liked the chapter headings, they are a unique and creative way to tell the reader what is coming next without giving away the plot. This book is quite short and a lot happens within the 109 pages, possibly a little too much. But it was a quick, enjoyable easy read. There is hope, romance and tragedy within the pages and Desdemona is affected by all of them. I don’t know that I could relate to any of the characters, but I understand what the author is going for. I didn’t care for the romance but quite liked how everything wrapped up at the end. I read this book without reading anything else the author wrote, but it looks like this is a stand-alone novel that takes place within a series she writes. It is possible I would enjoy it more if I’d read any of the others.
I'm of two worlds with a lot of Sacrifice. Overall, I enjoyed it, but I was frequently left with more questions than answers, so I don't think I got to truly experience the entire depth of this world, which holds a lot of promise.
As an example, the narrator and main character of Desdemona is a compelling heroine- intelligent, brave, blindly loyal to her family, and while delving into these magical multi-religious spiritual realms still manages to project some views that are more in line with mainstream conservative Christianity. I thought that was an intriguing juxtaposition, but there's no real reason given for that incongruity. Without necessarily agreeing with their opinion, I could get behind the idea of an anti-abortion Christian, fallen-angel romancing, spiritualist who communes with pagan gods and goddesses, but I need to know how that package got created. These little details kept it from being a 5-star book for me. The romance that developed between two characters seemed to blossom just a little too fast; I needed just a few more details about the world.
There were minor quibbles like that throughout the book, some of which probably stemmed from me reading a standalone spinoff rather than the previously released series. Readers may want to start at the beginning of the series even though I don't think it's 100% necessary in order to enjoy the story.
And it does boil down to an enjoyable and believable (as much as a supernatural yarn can, that is) story about Desdemona and her sister, Davhie. Davhie is everything you expect in a little sister who is excessively immature and who drives you insane, but you would literally be willing to drag yourself to hell to save.
Overall, a solid 4 star book with an epilogue that will really get you excited for what might come next.
Sacrifice is a short, but tightly packed book that keeps you interested throughout. I loved Des and Dahvie's relationship. Their sibling rivalry and protectiveness is exactly how real siblings act. Des is a fun character. But, like in many romance novels, I hated how she hates Ambrose/Mal for almost the entire book but when its convenient she is suddenly in love with him. I don't like how Mal acted all possessive of Des, which is gross in itself, but then it turns out he was lying the entire time, which is worse. But then he acts like everything is fine. Ugh. Other than that, I loved the plot and all the characters EXCEPT Mal. It was a tad confusing at times and there were a couple typos, but nothing big. The relationships between Des and Dahvie and Des and Aello were the best parts of this book. that and Sahure. She was awesome.
Sacrifice was an interesting read, especially if you like occult. I really enjoyed the writing style of the author but the story itself was rather confusing. I found myself re-reading parts of it, thinking I'd missed something. The same goes for the characters. New characters seemed to pop into the story and I was left trying to figure out who they were and the significance of their appearance. Aside from that, I really liked the connection between the main character Desdemonda and her sister Davhie. You could tell how much she loved her sister, to the point that she literally travelled to Hell for her. I do think the love story could've had a bit more substance. It just seemed she hated him one second and loved him the next. Overall I think it was a good read. I was given a free book in exchange for an honest opinion.
I love the world these books takes you to, so much magic and mystery but at the same time it felt so realistic which is something I really look for in a paranormal book. I want to be able to believe that something like this could really happen, it’s hard to do with stories like this but the author did it beautifully. I also really liked the writing style of author, she has a way of really building up a scene without overdoing it. All the relationships were nicely developed but it was the sisterly relationship between Desdemonda and Davhie that I loved the most. I love the lengths Desdemonda would go to save her sister, and it’s these kinds of relationships that you don’t really get in paranormal fantasy books. The story is short but don’t let that put you off, it packed with a lot. I would definitely recommend this book.
This is a good quick read for you occult and Fantasy lovers. It starts of rather slow, but the story gets interesting (and a bit confusing) but I enjoyed the story very much, and the character development was superb. I was rooting for Desdemona the whole time, and I found myself feeling what she felt, and identifying with her struggle. I won't put any spoilers in, but if you're a fan of occult books, I think you'll really enjoy this one.
A great paranormal fantasy. While short this was a really good read. I found myself identifying with Des a little bit in the beginning, having grown up in a military family. I was rooting for her the entire book. I can't wait to see what happens next. Also love the pronunciation key in the back of the book. Very helpful :)
Sacrifice: A Game of Gods is not my usual fare, but I found myself somewhat pleasantly surprised as I worked my way through it. It's a quick read and fast paced, for fans of the genre you will probably fund yourselves turning pages with a rewarding frequency.
The protagonist is a interesting, character motivations and descriptions are solid and contribute to the story. The story arcs with a good clip, and you get the sensation that many of the items you may be scratching your head on will be revealed at another time, so there's an incentive to get that "one more chapter" in, which for me is always a hallmark of a good read. I am generally not a fan of the romance genre, but I can also say that - in this case - it wasn't overly heavy handed and it didn't detract from what I would describe as the 'meat' of the story.
For fans of the YA/mythological/demonology/occult fiction w/ a strong female lead, you'll probably find something in here you'll enjoy.
I really enjoyed reading this book. Not the typical book of my choice but all the same the writing was excellent and the plot thickened along perfectly. I would recommend this author to all. Thanks for sharing your talents with us. Good job. I will look for other books by this author.
Sacrifice is my first venture into the Game of Gods series and I had no difficulties understand the author's, probably in part due to my familiarity with books in this subgenre like Percy Jackson and (more distantly) Chronicles of Nick. Sacrifice, and I believe most of the series, is more romance-oriented, and therein lies this book's greatest flaw for me: the romance felt rushed. Desdemona (our MC) and Ambrose (her beau) have few interactions that the readers see, and most of those are her complaining about him. This means that the moment where readers recognize that she's in love with him comes out of nowhere with no build-up and no emotional payoff. The second flaw is that Desdemona is never allowed to really do anything, which is a shame because I like her personality. She is fully cognizant of the paranormal world throughout the book, knows her way about it and is capable of astral projection, but despite this she never really does anything except wander through it. And yes, more of her interactions transpire with divine or semi-divine characters, but I just would have liked her to do stuff and be awesome (which is different from powerful, mind you.) Those qualms aside, Sacrifice is enjoyable and a light read.
After great personal, emotional and non-existent sacrifice (intentional), my brother and I prostrated ourself on the altar of youtube with a video review sacrifice (intentional) for yall's enjoyment. If you feel like sacrificing (you know the drill, best things, threes and all that) some time on an ignoble pursuit, check it out.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8mOg...
