Uttered years earlier by a troubled seer, the prophesy provides a significant clue to the death of five-year-old Aiden Braddock. But gathering proof enough to catch a killer is easier said than done.
Their relationship strained by the recent revelation of devastating secrets, Sully and Dez must figure out a way to work together as they continue to seek justice for their loved ones.
A possible solution lies buried deep within a forty-year-old mystery. Psychiatrist Roman Gerhardt’s son was just six when he disappeared; Sully and Dez are banking on Gerhardt turning over damning information on Lowell Braddock—if the brothers can uncover what happened to the little boy and stomach what will amount to a deal with the devil.
But digging into the mystery will do more than force Sully to face the torture he endured two years ago. As he closes in on a final confrontation with one of his most dangerous foes, Sully’s about to discover his darkest enemy might be himself.
Raised on a farm on the Canadian Prairies, words quickly became my means of exploring the world around me and giving life to the one created in my imagination. Fascinated by ghost stories and crime fiction, I have been writing both for well over two decades, drawing on more than fifteen years in a career in a criminal justice setting. When not putting Scrivener through its paces, I enjoy reading, portrait drawing, travel and spending time with family and friends.
Dez and Sully are continuing to try to go after the Circle, a ring of rich men and women who do illegal things to keep their ill-gotten gains. In particular, they are trying to prove how terrible their uncle is. He’s so upstanding in the community, it will be hard to convince anyone he’s a murderer many times over. In Second Son, the brothers decide to go after Dr. Gethardt, solve the mystery of the doctor’s missing son, and figure out the prophesy of the second son. All in hopes of righting so many wrongs and bringing Sully back from the dead.
I love these two brothers and how strong their bond is. That’s why it was so hard to read the first few chapters. Dez and Sully had shared some hurtful secrets with each other, causing some major friction. Luckily, their bond is much stronger and they are better brother afterwards.
There are some good mysteries in this one. I’ve been able to guess all the mysteries in the previous novel (although, that’s never ruined them), but this time I was surprised by some of the twists. There are a lot of coincidences but I still really enjoyed the twists and turns in this one.
These books are always well-written. The action and thrilling scenes are always so well done. Bayne does such a good job describing the action, making a reader feel all of the tension and excitement. She develops the characters so well that they feel very real. I loved the spunk Mara, Dez and Sully’s mom, showed in this one. They have made some good friends and allies: Emily, Raynor, and Lachlan.
I downloaded the 7th novel in this series immediately after finishing this one. I can’t wait to see how Bayne finishes everything up!
If you have read any of my reviews on this series you'll know by now that it is one of my all time's favourites. The perfectly plotted main arc, the fantastic characters, the individual arcs of each book, all of them make reading these stories a joyful venture.
The last book ended in a heartbreaking moment, with Dez horribly hurt at what he perceived as Sully's betrayal and throwing Sully's parenthood in his face as a gut reaction. So, when we find our friends again they are both hurt and regretful. But Sully and Dez' bond is stronger than anything that we can imagine, and they soon find their way to forgiveness. I adore how Eva gently prods Dez to deal with his anger and the way she walks him around his options. She's such a wonderful, smart woman =D
And let's not forget about the killing of Montague! Forbes, who is investigating the murder, is looking for Sully, as he recognize him from the surveillance videos. Although he hasn't said anything about it to the rest of the force, and only contacted Dez about it.
And Lachlan? He is proving to be a more than helpful ally and he's more than willing to help to bring Lowell down. And, to be honest, I too want to see Lowell burn in hell.
The main arc is closing and some of the long-standing mysteries are being revealed here. And I was delightfully surprised with Forbes' surprise :P And I'm more than happy with the poetic justice of Gerhardt's punishment.
Remember Paul, from 'Black Candle'? He's back, and I suspect he'll have an important (and probably very dangerous) role in the next book.
Emily is still amazing: brave, resourceful and willing to risk everything to bring justice to those to whom it was denied in life.
The storyline is, as always, thrilling and full of suspense; the writing simply phenomenal, intriguing and so talented. Yes, I'm an unabashed fan of H.P. Bayne's writing, but really, is there anyone who has read her books and doesn't love her writing?
This is a superb book in an outstanding series and I can't recommend them enough. Take a chance here and read the whole series, you won't regret it.
AUDIOBOOK: This is such an emotional story and a turning point in the major arc of the series. One of the shinier, major themes is family. How they shape us, how we are, in part, what our upbringing made us but also how we are, too, what we have made of ourselves.
Revisiting this story made me love these characters even more, and John Downey adds such wonderfully emotional deep to the characters whit his fabulous narration that I couldn't help to fall in love with them all over again ♥
There was a prophecy that when the second son rises he would bring the downfall of the circle.
The circle is a group of prominent town people in Kimotan Rapids that basically run the town……………in secret. Nobody knows about them and if they have heard a rumour they don’t know who is a part of it.
Lowell Braddock is part of it. This is basically how he has got away with the wrongs he has, and partly why he has done them in the first place.
Dez and Sully, along with police officer Forbes Raynor and P.I. Laclan Fields desperately look into the problem. Dez has been rocked by the revelation that his Uncle killed his brother and Sully equally shaken by the disclosure that the doctor who tortured him, Roman Gerhardt, is actually his biological father. They think the answer might lie in finding out what happened to Gerhardt’s other son David, and set out to find his wife’s ghost. What the find with it nearly kills them.
This is the sixth book in the series and I strongly advise you to read them in order as there is a running story through the set of them,
I am now on the last one and hopeful all the questions will be answered.
Sully and Dez Expose more Secrets in Kimotan Rapids
This book opens with Sully living in TheForks in the dilapidated mansion that used to belong to Linton Blackmoor, (now known as ‘Noisey Ned’) Ravenwood Hall, Book revolves around Sully and Dez in conjunction with policemen Forbes Raynor and PI Lachlan Fields delve further into the nefarious Circle, a group of Kimotan Rapids most influential business leads.
Their investigation leads them right back to the Lockwood Asylum and the deviously evil Dr Gerhardt.
After the huge secret the was unveiled by Dez towards the end of the previous book, things will not go well.
So, besides the Circle investigation, Sully, Dez, and Lachlan are also trying to uncover more information about Dr Gerhardt’s background. Specifically, ...the disappearance of his young son and subsequently, his wife, Eloise Gerhardt. As the clues start to build up, so does the tension, leading us to more secrets being exposed and Sully’s hidden identity being put under scrutiny.
Once more a very satisfying read. I am becoming obsessed with these characters and Kimotan Rapids. I am going to hate it when I get to the end (sad face) Five stars
Wow absolutely thrilling adventure with old friends!
I cannot believe the talent H.P. Bayne has! This series just gets better and better! Sully and Dez get through some pretty rough things together family wise, but then add in the ghosts and just plain evil people who are alive...needless to say this story has plenty of twists and turns that keep you turning the pages into the wee hours because you have to know what happens next!
The sixth part to what has been an excellent series. Sully is finding out more about his incredible abilities, not only can he see ghosts, but only those that have been murdered, he can also use their energy to help his bodies strength and he needs that along with his guile to help him out in this exciting episode. Sully and Dez who are still at loggerheads with each other come up with a plan to extract info from the evil psychiatrist Roman Gérhart, who's own son went missing at the age of six many years ago, when they learned this knowledge they thought it might help them in their quest to bring down their even more evil uncle Lowell who murdered Dez's young brother Aiden when he was only five. Gerhart doesn't know that his son is still alive and when Sully discovers who that is, it is a shock to the reader which is a surprising turn for the reader. The next episode is the last and I look forward to it with relish, it has been a well put together and well thought out series. Another excellent 4/5.
Thank you for the ARC read, I voluntarily give this book an honest review. Sully is hiding away again only this time he doesn't have Dez once he had told him the truth about everything. Struggling to find evidence against Lowell if only he can get clear of another murder attempt. Dez had drop a bombshell on him about his father but to be fair so had he with his news. With some much to do and nowhere to turn Sully may just have to deal with one of the two people that want him dead. Can he make it alive this time. Great addition to the Sullivan Gray series what a thrilling twisting tale of Sully. I highly recommend this book.
Sullivan is holding out on his brother and when he finds out he delivers a bombshell of his own, so the fallout of which has them having to work together but apart, it doesn't last long. They do work it out and come together again, but Sullivan is hurt more deeply than Dez realises. Learning his father is the horrible man he is, not just in torturing him, but in raping his father, he goes a long journey and finds his half brother in the process. Who has been there all along. It's an excellent story. It made me cry in some places at the pain that Sully has and his feelings. His ghost senses however are stronger and the past comes in to play. Can't wait to see how it all ends.
As Dez and Sully, begin to investigate what the prophecy means and why Aiden had to die. More family become involved. Hoping to get Dr. Gerhardt to turn on other members of the Circle, by promising to find his son David. Sully hopes this will be the beginning of and end to finding answers. When Emily, gets an invitation to attend a reunion at Lockwood. Dez, Mara, Lachlan, Emily, Forbes, and Sully take this as their chance to investigate the unused wing and the blue room. But more secrets remain, and danger still lurks at every corner.
This is the sixth book in The Sullivan Gray series
This was a great read as always this Author has me on the edge of my seat . This series is one of my favorites I always look forward to each and every new book . Plus the bat shit crazy Dules are back with what everything else going on their the last people Sully needs to worry about . Looking forward to the next book in this series Can't wait to see what the Dules are up to no go I'm sure .
A totally awesome book of murder, intrigue, ghosts, pure evil and love, lots of love and forgiveness and moving forward in life. The very ‘real’ characters solve a dreadful crime as they face the future, emotions are raw. So well written I was immersed in these characters lives. I love it and this whole series. Totally clean A brilliant book!.
An awesome continuation of a great storylines! It continues where the last book left off...Sully in hiding a Dez going back home to his wife and daughter. But they find they must work together to bring down their worst enemy. They find out sone interesting information along the way, but I won’t tell. Read this fantastic addition!
Wow, I love these books they just get better. Sully has another brother, I didn't see that one. One of the enemies is down I just hope they get the other. These books keep you on edge with the action that happens in them and they make you cry with the sadness too. I hope everything gets resolved in the next book.
The next story in the Sullivan Gray series has Sully and Dez finally finding answers
The brothers finally start getting some answers. Sully faces several of his worst fears and help other people find some as well. A semi for becomes very helpful, and another proves incredibly tough and helpful.
I am so enjoying reading the Sullivan Gray books and can't recommend them enough. You can read as a stand alone but they are much better story-wise as they follow the story on from the previous book. These books have you wanting to flip to the end to see whats going to happen. Get reading them you won't be disappointed.
Reading this book, and the series, up to the final installment, reminded me of something. When I was in the military, I rode in the back seat of a fighter jet while the pilot practiced evasive maneuvers. I flew at 600 miles per hour over the ground at takeoff, up to thousands of feet in the air. That’s what this series has felt like so far. I loved it.
♾️/⭐️ Wow what a plot twist!!! Every story seems to deepen the characters back stories more and more. The relationship between the brothers is yet again truly tested and is definitely an emotional read in parts balanced with fun and spooky elements. Truly gripping storyline, can’t wait for the final book, have no idea where it’s going to go! Highly recommend!
Things really start to snowball rapidly in this book. Many questions are answered even as they pose new ones. I can’t wait to read what happens next! I really love this series and I am very vested in what happens. One of the best series I have read.
H.P.Bayne in my opinion is the best mystery paranormal. Writer I have had the joy of reading. Second Son is packed full of mystery and action. Sully and his family are amazing. I can't wait for the next book.
The author has kept this story going strong. Each book has upheld the fine quality the series started with. The next and last book will wrap the story up and I will be sad to see it end.
I cannot get enough of this series, and sincerely hope there will be more of Sullivan Grey, and Family they are gripping, really interesting and totally brilliant, and I've just started the last one.
This is a wonderful series. It is well written, keeps you in suspense and I read all of this series. I couldn’t put it down. I love the characters. I highly recommend this series and this author!
