Alene’s home life is falling apart. Her father’s solution is to retreat and her mother’s is to scuba dive in the bottom of a whisky bottle. Alene’s preferred technique is to go hiking in the picturesque woods of Groton State Forrest.
But when she hikes farther than ever before, through thick falling snow, she comes across the serenity of the majestic, frozen Kettle Pond. The place is perfect. Just what she needed to soothe the inner turmoil.
Until a wavering tendril of black smoke rises from the distant center of the frozen pond. Against her better judgment, Alene investigates, only to learn the true meaning of turmoil. And blood-curdling terror.
A modern tale of twisted terror, this short story, the third in a series connected to a strange town in the center of Vermont, runs approximately 14 pages in print.
