Life in Paradise isn’t what it’s cracked up to be. Cara Mia Delgatto feels like she is drowning in problems!

Stuart, Florida. Her ex-husband is refusing to pay their son’s college tuition (as promised), her sister is pulling mean pranks, and her old boyfriend has broken her heart…again. And that’s just the personal stuff.

She’s also concerned about keeping the cash register ringing at the Treasure Chest, her store specializing in upcycled, recycled, and repurposed goods.

An important media event goes sadly wrong and Cara’s famous temper gets the better of her. Then a prying reporter turns up dead, practically in Cara’s backyard. Could the reporter’s murder have anything to do with a century’s old blot on Florida state history, the infamous Dozier Boys School? Suddenly, Cara’s personal problems seem trivial compared to the abuse and murder of hundreds of innocent boys.

Kicked to the Curb is the charming second novel in the Cara Mia Delgatto cozy mystery series. If you like witty heroines, former flames reconnecting, and Florida’s beautiful Treasure Coast, you’ll adore Joanna Campbell Slan’s captivating tale.

Buy Kicked to the Curb and escape to Florida with a romantic, crafty, get-away today!

National bestselling and award-winning author Joanna Campbell Slan was born in Jacksonville, Florida, but she grew up in a small town in Indiana. After graduating from Ball State University with a degree in journalism, she worked as a newspaper reporter, a newspaper ad salesperson, a television talk show host, a college teacher, a public relations professional, and a motivational speaker. In that capacity, she was named by Sharing Ideas Magazine as “one of the top 25 speakers in the world.”

Slan's work has appeared in five of the New York Times Bestselling Chicken Soup for the Soul books, and one of those became a television show. She is the author of nearly 80 books, nonfiction and fiction, including Death of a Schoolgirl, which won the 2013 Daphne du Maurier Award of Excellence.

Joanna's personal essays have appeared in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, and one was made into a television program on the Pax Network. The college textbook Joanna wrote—Using Stories and Humor: Grab Your Audience—has been praised as an invaluable resource by Benjamin Netanyahu’s speechwriter and endorsed by Toastmasters, International.

RT Book Reviews has called Joanna “one of mystery’s rising stars.” Her first novel—Paper, Scissors, Death—was an Agatha Award finalist. It features Kiki Lowenstein, a spunky single mom who lives in St. Louis. The sixth book in that series will be released Summer 2013.

Kirkus Reviews has said, “Slan’s mysteries are most valuable for the well-developed characters and the issues they raise.” RT Book Reviews has said, “Kiki is so darn entertaining that she’ll keep readers hooked.” A series of short stories featuring Kiki are available on Kindle.

Joanna’s newest series—The Jane Eyre Chronicles—began with Death of a Schoolgirl (Berkley) and continues with the release of Death of a Dowager. The series features Charlotte Brontë’s classic heroine Jane Eyre as an amateur sleuth.

As “Lila Dare,” Joanna has penned the fourth book in the Southern Beauty Shop series—Wave Good-bye.

Joanna is married to David Slan. The Slans live on Jupiter Island, Florida.

Truly enjoying this series . The characters are engaging and the settings wonderfully detailed. Using real-life events adds to the stories, keeping your interest. Not fond of cliff-hangers.

Sorry for being unable to write a review quickly, but at least I am doing it now. Even though I mainly read YA and Fantasy novels, I occasionally read Cozy Mystery books because they are usually lighthearted and quick reads.

For better or worse, Kicked to the Curb is not exactly a quick read. Plot wise I enjoyed the murder mystery with the little twists and turns along with the discovery (which I suspected pretty early on but the destination was fun nonetheless) of who did it and why. I also enjoyed it happening in a sunny beach destination in Florida. The cover is really luring.

Unfortunately, even though I can't be fully critical in the sense I have not read the first book of the series so the cast is unfamiliar, I can for another different reason. If this book has been fully self-published by a new author without a lot of resources, I would have easily given it a solid 3 stars. But I always hold previously trad published bestsellers to a higher standard simply because they both have the network of assistants, editors and a strong following of beta readers and since they achieved bestseller status, they can afford 1000 usd to fully polish the book.

I did spot a typo or two in this book, but my main gripe is that is suffers from too many darlings that were not killed on time. The book wanders around and around and around with ridiculously repetitive sentences about how Cara's new store recycles stuff. The context of the store becomes very apparent quickly within the novel so no need to repeat it 80 times. Many chapters don't advance the plot or character development at all either, most of them centering on Lou, but you will probably cringe after Jack the Chihuahua's potty emergency #50,461 erupts.

Info dumps of the Sun Train system? You got it! Info dumping is a common rookie author mistake, and usually first drafts have em to help guide the author that are usually ripped away with revisions. The concept of the ticket system could have just been explained with context and maybe a glossary added to the end of the book to explain the info dump for any international reader. Again, these sorts of book issues that slow things down should have been nipped by editing.

When does this book take place? In the 1950's?

Strangely enough, Cara owns an Iphone. I guess despite not being super rich or very technology astute she can easily afford a cheap cellphone plan with an older model. The strange thing is that a rough estimate on even the oldest Iphone models means Cara is around 37 years old. I can understand not everyone around my age can set up a fancy website, but the way she speaks makes you think for a huge portion of the novel that Cara is in her mid-50's. For example, she encounters someone who has buck teeth and explains to the cop that this person looks like... a puppet character from a 1950's children's show. Her parents were in their late 50's, so even her parents would have barely been infants when that show finished. Any Xennial would have instantly associated a perky person with buckteeth to the Mad Magazine mascot guy. Proof this book didn't pass through the hands of any beta readers under 45 years old.

Furthermore, the book happens in the last 5 years but everyone acts like a lesbian couple is so edgy and taboo. I can understand the conservative mother of the couple to be a bit close minded and maybe Cara because it looks like she grew up in a conservative rural area, but Lou the cop? A guy who isn't even 30 years old that lives in a semi urban middle class area? Unless the person grew up in a super super super rural area of the Bible Belt, they wouldn't have batted much of an eye.

Is Cara's son entitled? We never meet her 18 year old son who we only know because he is flunking out of his 1st semester of college from too much partying and somehow she wants her very nasty ex to foot the bill. Apparently the book explains he filled a legal contract her grampa has hidden in his messy house where he promised to pay for the kid's college education (may I add the kid grew up in Missouri and is likely paying a bloated out of state tuition in Miami U?). Since I never read book #1, I can't be sure when did the kid move to Miami or the reasoning why he specifically chose that school, but I have a bit of a hard time sympathizing with him for not getting a part time job to pay for the bills. Since these scenes happen in Cara's tormented POV where her doormat behaviors are a result of past trauma, it is hard to know more about the son. Still, I think junior needs to take a sabbatical, get a job, or go to a cheaper school without expecting his dad will pay his way.

Too many employees in the air. Cara doesn't have a stable income but she is paying for 5 people, two of them fresh new staff (very productive staff BTW but she never even hired them, a coworker hired them without asking for her permission). Skylar and the other woman are so faint in personality that I could never tell them apart. The book could have fused them into one person without affecting the plot at all.

If anything, while I liked the cat that join's Cara's flock, the best part of the book is the snarky Honora and her daughter Evelyn. I believe I would have enjoyed the book a lot more if Honora had been the MC. She knows everyone in town, walks the talk, has a good eye for people and is very likeable even in her sometimes forced interactions with her daughter. She deserves her own sleuth series.

This book follows Cara Mia Delgatto who is working on getting people interested in The Treasure Chest her store of using recycled things to make new things. When a media event winds up with the death the following morning of a newspaper reporterit's up to Cara to figure out who wanted to kill the reporter Kathy Simmons. Was there someone else having issues with the reporter besides Cara?

With all this going someone has decided that The Treasure Chest has something they want and they break in to try to find something! Add this to the fact a senator in town has died and his wife is screaming murder, there is no shortage of things going on in this book.

As you dig deeper into this book you see how the two deaths are interconnected and it really draws you in wanting to know more about the Senator and Kathy. What I found there was mind blowing. What a great cozy mystery!

A wonderful cozy mystery set in Florida at The Treasure Chest store. The characters are well fleshed out and I saw all sides of their personalities. From quirky to compassionate, they had a musketeer quality of a "one for all" attitude.

Cara Mia soon became my favorite. Struggling to come to grips with finding out her true identity after going through a bad divorce, opening a new shop, and sending her son off to college, she finally discovers that she is stronger than she thinks. I loved her wonderful quirky behavior and the writer's ability to show that second chances do happen.

There are lots of twists and unexpected events throughout the story. It was laid out wonderfully and the ending wrapped up all the questions I had. It kept me guessing until the end.

Highly recommended. I will be reading the rest of the books in the series.

Craft shop owner Cara Mia Delgatto is charismatic, capable and caring. And she sure cares about the dead body in a car trunk in the parking lot adjacent to her store. The victim just happens to be a journalist who’s threatened to blackmail Cara. Since Cara might have been the last person to see the woman alive, she becomes a suspicious candidate to the cops. As Cara gets further involved, she realizes the case is much bigger than anyone suspects. Can she unravel the clues in time to stop the killer from shoving her body into the recycle bin next? Crafts, crime and cunning twists will keep your interest in this ingenious mystery. If you like a good puzzle to solve, this lighthearted crime novel is the book for you.

Joanna Slan has done it again with her murder mystery book. Book two in this series really grabs readers from the start. Cara Mia Delgatto seems to always have murder knocking at her door. She owns The Treasure Chest and is working with a fun, loving staff to turn "trash" into treasure. Shortly after her store's big kick off party, a body is discovered out her back door. Cara was seen in heated discussion with the victim at Cara's party. This was a very quick read to the end. Couldn't wait to find out who did it.

Book 2 in the Cara Mia series and it is fantastic. Trouble seems find Cara Mia when ever she least expects it. With the Treasure Chest set to open problems arise and Cara Mia and her friends band together to help the cops solve the crime. Do I spy a possible love triangle with Cara, Jason and the Police Captain Davidson? This book pulls you in as you try to figure out who is behind yet another murder in the area. Life in Stuart, Florida sure isn't boring. I love Cara Mia. I can't wait to read the next one to see what is in stored for Cara Mia and everyone in Stuart.

Cara Mia Delgatto is clever at repurposing and recycling at her little shop, The Treasure Chest, but she’s out of solutions when a dead body is found in a car near her shop. It doesn’t help that she may have been the last person who was with the victim. This mystery kept my attention and I genuinely loved the idea of the store and the circle of friends around Cara. This is a well-crafted cozy mystery. Now I need to back up and read Tear Down and Die- the first book in the series!

I'm happy that Cara is finally moving on. This was an enjoyable read. That last line at the end of the book makes me eager for the next one, and I was really happy with the little updates on Kiki I'm really looking forward to the next book with her too

Need a better proof reader

Enjoyed the book, however, there were several issues where wrong words were used or in a wrong order. A couple of times I had to re-read a few sentences and that slowed the pace of the story. Other than that, a great story

As someone who reads quite a few lighthearted or cozy reads such as this book I was unimpressed. The story dragged on for a very long time with unnecessary twist and turns there were many times. The story pointed to the main character, however, in a few sentences before that, it was absolutely impossible that it could be the main character. It was almost as though the author was trying to drag the book out. So to help matters along I did try to download it and listen to it as an audiobook. That was worse than trying to read it. The audiobook voice actor sounded no better than Siri reading a book. She was monotone and choppy. I am surprised the author. Let this person read their work of art. I did end up getting through the book. My recommendation is skip it and go to another series. Although the ending was a great ending, the pain that you went to to get there was pointless. There were so many times that they pointed the finger at the main character but it was obviously just a way to drag the book along. I will skip the rest of the series.

After reading and enjoying Tear Down and Die, I was eager to see what happened next in Stuart, Florida. In Kicked to the Curb, Cara Mia Delgato, and her employees Skye Blue and MJ Austin are busy upcycling, recycling, and repurposing items to sell in The Treasure Chest. Cara hires another employee, Sid Heckman, a Goth Geek who is good at computers. After a reporter for Shoreline News buys a framed photo from the shop and then is found dead in her trunk, there is another mystery to be solved. As a retired special education teacher, I liked that the author introduced a character with Asperger's Syndrome (an Autism Spectrum Disorder). Detective Lou Murray is busy working the case and several new characters enter Cara's world. She also begins dating again. Since the book kinda ends on a cliffhanger, it's on to book 3!

Life

It’s almost like what it is today. Strange Deja vu.
When Cara gold a woman on the beach half alive, the cops get involved. The lady is an immigrant.
When one of the residents of Jupiter Island ends up involved, things heat up.
Then Cara gets a beautiful dress from the consignment shop next door to the Treasure Chest. But many people who know the owner of said dress say that she’d never give that away.
Cara’s in the middle of things once again! She tries to return the dress but it was confounded.
The book was great, but did we ever find out if Cara got to keep the dress or not?

A fresh story, plot, and characters

Kicked to the Curb is a J. C. Slab series that is new to me.
The characters she has created are interesting and fresh, compared to the long series of Kiki Lowenstein mysteries.
Most interesting is the shop that is the center of activity: The Treasure Chest. The owner and her friends repurpose, upcycle, and add special touches to create scenes of miniatures, beach themed furniture, and other fascinating items. The creativity and synergy that happen there are inspiring. For example, a sea-weathered board becomes a towel holder once the craftswoman adds rope.

As I read the final sentence in this book, I literally said out loud: “Whaaat?!”
I don’t consider that a spoiler, as several things happen in this book, the second in the series. I had intended to take a break from this book and read a couple I have on loan from the library - but now I’m not so sure!
I’m enjoying the series, and the development of the main characters. I wish the dog was not constantly crated - the dog seems to be remembered only occasionally! Give that little dog a bigger role in this series!
A decent series that I hope continues to get better.

So in the first one, Cara rescues a Chihuahua, in this one a rescue cat is given to her....and you wonder what the next rescue will be coming? But this cat is unique, as the owner of the cat was murdered and Cara seems to be in the middle of yet another investigation. Does she get out of it or does she end up in jail? Not only does she rescue animals it seems like Cara is in the game of rescuing people around her who end up working at the Treasure Chest, does it work out?

Great story lines!

My sister recommended Joanna Campbell Alan's books to me, and Im so glad she did!! We both enjoy series that lead you to build a "friendship" with characters... and no swearing or crude scenes. The only thing I will criticize is the need for a good proofreader. It's irritating to be reading along and come across missing, misspelled or repeated words. I think I missed my calling!😉

Book 2 in this series written by Joanna Cambell Slan. I am enjoying this series and love the development of the characters in this book. I have read book 1 but feel that these books could be read in any order. I look forward to seeing what other adventures Cara and her friends will get into.

Mysteries and cops and Love

The first book was good but this one is even better with so much action that I wasn’t able to put it down until I finished it. An amazing ending that leaves you wanting to dive into the next one. A book that you should not miss.

Wow !

A lot packed into this book! Cara Mia had here hands full between her store, finding out about another murder and Cooper continued to be attached to her sister. So much happens again. My thanks to Joanna for the diversity in her books!

Secrets brought forth

Cara and her crew venture into great opening for the store. Little did they know that the old picture gallery would lead to crimes of the past. Through it all Cara finds herself at the attention of 3 men. Very flattering.

I loved the story line. The narrative was interesting. Then at the end it became political.
That just ruin the entire story.
