A barbarian and a scientist are destined to be together… if they can build a bridge between their vastly different cultures…
After Cillian’s ship crash lands in unfamiliar territory, he’s eager to continue his mission to explore space and discover new alien species. Okay, maybe he is a little scared meeting his first alien group, but who wouldn’t be wary of all that muscle and warrior’s determination? Not to mention the amount of bare skin… Still, he’s lived a sheltered life until now and has dreamed of making first contact with an unknown race. This is his chance.
Jagher’s not sure what to make of the bumbling science crew when they nearly take his head off, falling from the sky. They are aliens, that much he is sure, but they don’t seem to pose a safety risk. Especially Cillian, he’s too soft and sweet, and makes Jagher extremely protective and possessive whenever he is around. But thanks to Jagher’s status as a playboy, his warrior brothers don’t believe the strength of his affection until Jagher and Cillian touch for the first time and Jagher discovers they are mates. Now that he has Cillian, he has no desire to look at another again.
Cillian was only ever meant to spend a short time exploring space, and back home, his father has a life planned for him that will take Cillian out of Jagher’s arms. They set off through space together on a mission that will not only prove the depths of their affection, but introduce something new, and adorable, into their world.
Jagher is the second book in The Kif Warriors, an alien mpreg series. This series is the first co-write between Crista and Kiki. They’ve joined forces to bring you all the humor, magic, steam and action that you enjoy!
Well, well, well. Color me surprised. I actually enjoyed this one a little more this time. Don't get me wrong...Cillian was still a self-entitled, snobbish prick, but he didn't grate on my nerves as much and as I read him through a different lens, I felt more empathy for him and how he grew up to become how he was. Bumping it up a star.

This book annoyed the fuck out of me! I hated, HATED, Cillian for most of the book. He was awful. He was rude, condescending, snooty and just a plain old brat! And while he does change later on, at 70% in the book, it was way too late for me to recover any really good feelings towards him. At 70% it time jumped and at this point he was said to be acting better towards Jagher, holding his hand, talking with him etc. but we don't get to see those changes. I think I would have liked him better if we had his POV during this time and how his feelings changed. I'm glad he stood up to his father and protected the Kif, Jagher and his eggs, but there was still a lot he needed to atone for, like apologizing to Loshka. I get he was raised to feel this way and look down on anyone not of his species, but it's hard for me to like a character who doesn't want to change or try to see the good in others. Had this been a little longer and those parts fleshed out, I think I would have enjoyed it more. Hopefully future books will have more likable characters 🙄
Although this is the second book in the series, it stands on its own very well - I hadn't read the first book before starting this one (although I think I'll definitely be going back to read the first one) and I didn't feel lost or like I was missing info.
I think the two authors did a great job with the world building and characters. I love all the diversity with the characters, and their traits, and now they aren't just normal humans. Jagher has scales (with some tentacles, yay!) and Cillian shimmers and has clutches. I really enjoyed reading about their romance. Although there is a bit of insta-mates to it, Cillian does resist at first. I love that he must overcome his preconceived notions about Jagher's species and other species, and winds up standing up to his family in order to protect his mating and his family.
Definitely interested in the next book of this series!
I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.
not as good as the first one in the series. strange concepts, but interesting to read about. the authors are good writers but idk if i'm really the target audience for this series.
This book is so so good, but man at first, I will not lie, I was so upset. I hate social hierarchies, and when those look down on others, it makes me so angry. Just because someone is different doesn’t make you better. But the MC learns his lesson in the end, when it comes down to choosing to do something abhorrent or choosing the right thing. Cillian was under the impression that this trip to Jagher’s home was supposed to be a scientific thing. But from the get go, it was just his father’s way of controlling things. When they are caught by Jagher’s kif, Cillian truly has no clue about what is going on. He really thinks they are supposed to be studying things. But when his so called friend, Declan, steals something, everything turns upside down. Especially when he goes into heat in Jagher’s presence. But when his heat is over and he meets Malik’s mate, his snobbiness kicks into overdrive and Jagher is devastated. He is wanting to dissolve the mating and is treating Malik’s mate like garbage because of what he was. But when taking Declan back to stand trial, Cillian has some things happen that cause some serious problems. And he finds out that the trip was all a ruse played out by his father to cause harm to others. And Cillian has a choice to make. Will he do what is right and forget all that he has been taught as far as classes and such or will he stick to the snobbish ways of his father and all that is wrong? Normally, in most cases when it presents itself, I’m usually sticking to the side of the mate. The younger or omega or whatever you want to call it. Not that I’m against the alpha sides, per se, but usually the others have harder to fight and such. But in this case, I’m all about Jagher’s side. My heart broke for him so much in this book. He has had it impossibly hard throughout the whole book. No matter what he does, it’s like his mate is spitting in his face. Even when the product of their mating is staring them in the face. Cillian is throwing his social class in everyone’s face, every second he gets. His disdain at the fact that Malik’s mate was a pleasure slave and the way he kept insulting him, killed Jagher. That his mate could seem so heartless. He didn’t even bother to try to find out the whole story before insulting him. And it just kept on. Until the trip back to his home. He finally started to change his ways and see that maybe he was wrong. I hated that Cillian had to go through what he did as far as his father, but if he woke up to see the truth to what was really going on and how the worlds really worked, then Cillian needed a good dose of reality. And it was time he stood up for what was right instead of following a tradition that is murderous and horrid in every way. It’s a sad story but it has an HEA. Don’t worry. It takes a lot to get to some of the good parts but sometimes you have to go through the fire to get to what is the good at the end. And in Cillian’s case, he needed to finally see that what was being thrown in his face wasn’t necessarily right. He needed to follow the love of his mother and what his true instincts were telling him. When he stopped to actually listen. And to follow the path that his mate knew was right. It may not be perfect, but it was the true course.
These two talented authors have written another sweet, enjoyable sci-fi alien romance which captures the reader’s attention & keeps it until the end, although this is the second book in the series, I think it can be read as a standalone. The plot is well-written & intriguing with some suspenseful situations with good scene descriptions & world building. The characters are fairly well-developed & at times inclined to be slightly confrontational because of difference between the species & social structures. There is: a rather stubborn scientist (Cillian) & his crew somehow manage to crash-land on a planet (M’Asra), Cillian then comes into contact with a planetary inhabitant/barbarian alien (Jagher) & the attractions begin to flare, a Asraf Council, the decision making Central Alliance, twists & turns, drama, intrigue, some suspense, a bit of humor, various kinds of aliens, adventure, action, deceit, betrayal, threats, danger, conflict, violence, confrontations, distrust, suspicions, discovery, greed, theft, political implications, heat issues, discovery, mates, a bonding ritual, confusion, decisions, misunderstandings, compromises, resistance, prejudices, despair, determination, stress, unexpected clutching, parental manipulations, political agendas, surprises, contentment, some steamy & a satisfying happy conclusion
This is a fated mate mpreg tale with a sci-fi twist. I did not like Cillian at first but I grew to love him. Jagher had very golden retriever vibes and I liked him from the beginning. The story was entertaining even if the end felt pulled out of nowhere.
This is a really interesting take on the ABO dynamic. Kiki Burrelli has added in some twists that no one else would think of.
When it comes to the characters in this book, I do like both Cillian and Jagher, although it took me some time to totally like Cillian. It's not that he's mean or cruel or anything, he's just really young, and kinda naive, and very trusting. He's been taught a lot of things that he has to get past. And that doesn't make him a bad person, it jsut makes him young. He is willing to learn though. He is curious and thirsty for all the knowledge he can get.
Jagher is a good and honorable warrior, who knows who Cillian is as soon as he touches him, and does what he can to help his mate fit in and understand what he is to Jagher.
Great story, and I'm looking forward to the next story in the series.
“That’s Humanity Relations Officer Cillian, to you,” Said the NON-HUMAN. Are you kidding me?
I’ll admit, I don’t expect much from mpreg stories, but I enjoy them occasionally. Just not this one. I couldn’t even tolerate Cillian until the book was almost over.
He was a brat, a snob, and a total ass to Loshka because he was once a pleasure slave (as if it was a choice.) I can’t stand willful ignorance.
I will still check out future stories in this series, it’s flawed but fun and reminds me a bit of Ruby Dixon’s IPB series.
Not the best follow up to book one, sadly. There were quite a few more errors, including a huge mistake where “Rahim” is “Sahim” half the time.
Cillian and Jagher were a good pairing, but I wanted more character development. Jagher is sweet and patient, but we don’t really get to SEE his devotion; we’re just TOLD he is. And on that note, Cillian has been raised to believe other races are less than, so in the beginning, he’s very condescending and rude to Jagher and his kif, and extremely hurtful to Loshka. He eventually changes, but, again, we don’t get to SEE that development/growth. I liked Cillian, but I really needed to see him apologize and show some humility to truly love him and connect with him, and that never comes. Everyone just accepts that he’s brainwashed and then that he eventually sees the light. The character development that I’m used to from Kiki (even in novellas) was lacking.
One thing I was happy with was seeing the Screamer from book one get what was coming to him. It doesn’t go as planned, but it’s still satisfying. I was worried after book one that we wouldn’t get that, but this series is very much a continuation of an overarching storyline, just with a new couple each book. I also liked that Cillian’s pregnancy was different; however, it hurt my heart that he goes through his clutching alone, and I was devastated hearing him talk about how his race culls their eggs/babies 😢.
One other nag I have is that the anatomy of males of the Asraf’s is detailed and specific, but the other aliens don’t get the same detail, and there’s no explanation of how penetration is eased (like, where’s the lube?). Just a small detail that took me out of the story at times. And in Cillian’s case, it would have been easy to have him produce slick, since he has heats, but that was never mentioned.
So, overall, I liked the book, but was disappointed in the lack of development and the poor editing. I hope the next one redeems the series, because I really like the world being built and the guys.
So far this series has been well written and interesting. The world building is great and I am so intrigued by the different races and cultures. This is not a human and alien story, but alien and alien, which is quite refreshing in this sub genre.
I loved the main characters. Cillian is initially such a privileged jerk; you go from annoyance to pity to actually liking him. And Jagher is his complete opposite, very stoic and reliable.
My complaint - like the first book, this one needed to be longer. There were parts that were glossed over or a little rushed, and there was so much that could have been written. I wanted more on page. Because the world building is so interesting, there could be so much more to these stories. I am glad there is an overarching story through the series.
With all that said - I read this in one sitting because I just had to know what happened next.
I will read the next book and the rest of the series. These books are entertaining enough and I need all the characters' stories.
I don't think these should be read as stand alones, but as part of a series. They basically happen in sequence and each book continues what happened in the previous book.
I recommend this series, especially if you like alien stories!
Jagher is the second book in the Kif Warriors series by authors Crista Crown and Kiki Burrelli . This is my first time reading this series. I will say the overall storyline was very easy to follow. I did feel like I was missing something I could never put my finger on exactly what though. So, I think this is better if read in order. I also think fans of the series would love this story even more than I did. Jagher he is protective and fiercely loyal. He will see justice done no matter the cost. Very much an alpha type of character with a pure heart. Cillian well his entrance into this story is a little untimely, to say the least. He is a human relations officer. From a Central Alliance planet. He is supposed to just study the local culture. He is going to be more than just studying it now. I liked this heart and his loveable nature. A very complex character that I liked seeing each layer. This entire story is really well done. I can tell it is very well thought out and the pace is great. I think I would have had a better experience if I did not start in the middle but having said that, I highly recommend this book. I loved how these two authors brought me a world I want more of. I want to have more stories in it, and I love the characters. Very well done and a must-read.
I got to about 57% of the book and I just couldn't deal with one of the main characters anymore. Absolutely hated him. And I'm talking Dolores Umbridge levels of hatred. I understand he had a shitty father and really prejudiced upbringing but after a point I just couldn't excuse his awful behavior with that and still root for the couple. I didn't see how he could be redeemed enough for me to like him and I was right. Still hated him at the end. And sorry but Jagher deserved better, but mostly the other Kif/family members deserved better.
Anyways I looked up reviews and I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that had major issues with Cillian. Apparently he changes later on but it happens off page which is not convincing to me at all. And to top it off he never apologizes to one of the characters I loved from book 1 for his super pretentious and horrible behavior.
So I ended up skipping the rest of the book and read the last three chapters so I'd know how it ends. After this mess I don't know if I'm interested in the rest of the series but I guess I'll give the next book a chance. I'll decide after that one if I dnf the series.
I'm not quite sure how to rate this one. I really liked book one, enjoyed the world building. The kif world is an interesting combination of primitive and advanced technology. This 2nd whole book felt slightly rushed with very little to give me a sense of knowing the characters. I didn't feel like I connected with either Jahger or Cilian. And I didn't feel much of a connection between either of them. The story felt rushed the ending felt very abrupt. And Hey I know it's an alien story but....the M'eggs Story line left me scratching my head. No hint of pregnancy but suddenly Cillian is delivering a clutch, 6 misshapened and oddly colored eggs, Described as fist sized. To everyone's surprise, they hatch in 2 to 3 weeks. The babies are then described as appearing like Jahger but with Cillians dark hair. I was confused, are they tiny 5 inch humanoids? Are they babies, infants? It all felt very vague to me. All that being said I like the story OK and will probly read the next one. If only to find out more about these mysterious eggs.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This is the second book in series and I wish I had read the first book beforehand as I felt a little lost at the beginning.
Jagher is a proud member of his Kif he is a likeable character, which I was sympathetic to straightaway.
I spent most of the book being really irritated by Cillian I found him to be a arrogant, elitist, conceited snob, I realised he is a product of how he was raised but he was completely tactless and not a nice sympathetic character for 80% of the book, I only found him partially redeemable once he found a backbone.
The story was good, but I might have enjoyed it more if I had read the first one. The differences between Jagher and Cillian should have been insurmountable, but by the end of the book they are making it work. I really enjoy the world building and the storytelling is brilliant, which means I will be going back to read the first book and I look forward to the next in this series.
It wasn’t bad, per say. It held my attention to the end, but I’m not sure I have the desire to read either the 1st or the 3rd when it comes out. I think what I most struggled with was how it felt like this was originally written as a M/F and not a M/M. I know it gets tricky once mpreg gets involved, but I’ve read a great many mpreg books where it very clearly defines two males together. Now, if this was described as a book between a man and a non-gendered person, it would fit well, but I don’t think that was their intention? I guess I could be wrong. Anyway, there wasn’t really any humor in the book that I can recall, and only one steamy scene towards the beginning (although it’s vaguely referenced throughout the rest of the book that they get it on). It’s still getting 3 stars because despite all that, I did finish the book and I didn’t hate it.
This 2nd book doesn't have the violent physical dark side as the first but instead delves into a parent's political machinations, greed, and attempted manipulation which is revealed further into the story. Jagher and Cillian are an unlikely pair meeting under unusual events; namely a space ship crashing on M'Asra and nearly killing Jagher. All parties look on each other as barbarians and prejudices are formed. As the tale is spun both M/M characters are drawn to the other through "shimmering" on Cillian's part and the "lightning" on Jagher's part; a mating call respectively. What was really distastefully repugnant was the Falas' selection process of dealing with clutches. This is a story of cultural angst that was a thought provoking piece and one I liked. For my honest review I was given this ARC by the LesCourt ARC team.
Jagher is the second book in The Kif Warriors series by Kiki Burrelli and Crista Crown. This is a sweet alien mpreg story that drew me right in and made me want more from the series.
Cillian is a scientist on a mission to explore space when his team crash lands on Jagher's planet. Everything he has ever been taught tells him he is above these Barbarians, but as he spends time with his new found mate he starts to see who the real barbarians are.
Oh I am definitely invested in this series now. There is that taste of drama, the hint of humor and a little heat but what I really love is how sweet these mates are. Jagher is protective and caring and opens a whole new life up for Cillian. I love them together and I enjoyed their story. Can not wait for book three to release.
I received an advanced reader's copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review and recommendation.
I love a good alien MPREG and book 2 in this series doesn't disappoint.
I really liked the beginning of this story. A naive explorer crash lands on a foreign planet with the intention of studying the natives, what could possibly go wrong? I found it funny and annoying and cringeworthy all in the best of ways.
At about 3/4 of the way there the book started to disappoint. Our naive little explorer is a sassy brat and still hasn't gotten over that. In some ways that feels realistic but it was ANNOYING and really cut into any happiness time first the MCs. I will say these MCs had next to zero happy time together which was disappointing. Again, the story ended to early for me but it looks like book 3 will pick up where 2 left off.
Overall, book 2 was less awesome than book 1 but still good in it's own unique way.
After reading book 1, I couldn't guess how Kiki Burrelli and Crista Crown planned to continue the story, but Jagher and Cillian make a wonderful couple. Again, in an amazingly detailed way the authors introduced us to another world in which social class is more important that love and family. At first, the way Cillian behaved make you disliked him a lot but as the character evolved and grew finally accepting the differences between cultures and embracing his mate and new family you first forgave him, then sympathized with him and at the end you fell in love with him as much as you did with Jagher and the rest of the Kif warriors. Great book, wonderful characters. I cannot wait for book 3!!! I received this book as an ARC and this is my honest opinion.
Cillian has lived his life being taught a view of others that is condescending as well as wrong and in turn makes him so. When he finds a life away from his father and his influence things begin to change. He meets Jagher who is a different race yet brings out many emotions in Cillian that are new and enjoyable. The two must find a way to work together and understand that their differences make them better. Cillian has a lot of growing up to do and he must decide if he will follow his heart or let others lead his life for him. It was nice to watch the two work towards a future and see Cillian grow and find himself. Their story is fast paced and has some strong characters that kept me entertained all the way to the end.
I read the whole series except this book - well, I read the sample (which is first two chapters) - and although I loved the other books I'm still not completely convinced about this one. I simply don't like Jagher or Cillian. Jagher seems to be typical tough guy solving everything with fists before using brain (and this doesn't seem to change acc. to other books) and Cillian is category for itself. He might have bright moments but I struggled throughout the all books to understand him. If you have haughty and rude comments but apologize after you're still rude and haughty and stupid on top of that. Either you know you shouldn't say it and then you don't or just own it.
If I ever read this book it would be only to fill in what happened between 1st and 3rd book - mainly how they got into space - but so far I can live without that.
*I voluntarily read this book. All opinions stated are solely my own and no one else's*
3.5 stars
This is the second book in the Kif Warrior Series and can be read as a standalone.
Jagher finally finds the other half of his soul but things don’t go smoothly. Can Jagher ride out the difficult times to get to his HEA?
Cillian did my head in and that’s putting it mildly.
The chemistry between Cillian and Jagher was ok. Cillian’s cold, distant behaviour kind of dulled down the intensity of their bond. The parts where they were on the ship felt rushed. I wanted to see their bond shine with warmth and love but it never really got to that point until the end pages.
The authors built up the suspense in regards to Cillian’s final choice really well.
I loved this book! Cillian is a shimmering alien who crashes on a plant expecting to meet unknown barbarians. Jaegar thinks he’s a naive, but compelling idiot until they touch and find out their mates. Cillian is used to the very rigid social hierarchy on his home planet and makes serial social faux pas but he changes as he and Jaeger get closer. I can’t wait for the next book I’m this series! This series is very unique, probably the only sci-fi romance series I’ve ever read with NO human beings!
Cillian was raised with very rigid, antiquated beliefs and as a result, he comes across as very arrogant. He honestly doesn't know any better and it isn't until he meets Jaegar that he begins to see things differently. Jaegar is a very kind, compassionate and caring man who has the patience of a saint while helping his mate become a better man. This was a quick read and while the second in a series, I didn't feel as though I missed anything vital. I was able to glean enough information about the first book to make this one thoroughly enjoyable.
I liked the first book better. This book was good but was very difficult to get through because Cillian was horrible. He treated everyone like they where below him and didn't matter, even accusing someone who had been a slave of being less then a person and I don't think the authors did nearly enough to redeem him. I still have the book 3 stars because I enjoyed the world building and getting to see more of the couple from the first book. I like the family the kif has and how it has bound them together.
I loved this book as much as the first. Jagher and Cillian have an interesting relationship due to their different species and I liked that it was not the same as Malik’s book. I can’t wait to see the babies grown up!
I look forward to the next book, and I must say I love Samun. He is my favorite of the kif. With how literal he is, he reads autistic to me, and as an autistic person that makes me so happy.
Kiki Burrelli has done it again!!! I absolutely loved this fascinating, snarky, adorable, hilarious, smoking hot, completely unexpected, definitely different, and totally awesome tale. I fell in love with Jagher from the very beginning, and I will admit to having a VERY strong urge to shake some sense into Cillian more than once. I really enjoyed how Cillian stood up to his father about Jagher and his children. I was hooked from beginning to end, and can't wait to see what happens next.
... only to find so much more than he had ever hoped for. His life didn't go according to plan and when his ship crashed it turns out that everything he had ever known about his life was a lie orchestrated by his father and his lover. Are lovely lava swimming Warrior and it picks him up, is more than a match for him and his stubbornness and shows him what it means to be loved and accepted and to have a family around you at all times.
