188 books81 followersHemendra Kumar Roy (Bangla: হেমেন্দ্রকুমার রায়) was a Bangali writer noted for his contribution to the early development of the genre of children's literature in the language. He was a noted contributor to the early development of Bengali detective fiction with his 'Jayanta-Manik'-stories, dealing with the exploits of Jayanta, his assistant Manik, and police inspector Sunderbabu. Roy also translated the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyám into Bengali. One of the best translations anywhere of Alice in Wonderland is Roy's Ajab Deshe Amala.
He is best remembered as the creator of Bimal-Kumar, the adventurer duo and Jayanta-Manik the detective duo. It was Bimal-Kumar's adventure story Jokher Dhan, for which he is famous in Bengali literature for children. He was a staunch believer in supernaturals and he used the supernatural element in several of his adventure and mystery stories. He was also a painter and the choreographer for Shishirkumar Bhaduri's Seeta. He created a comic series titled Tara Teen Bondhu, which consists of seven short stories such as 'Kukur Kahini', 'Nakuler Daon Mara', 'Maharaja Chor Churamoni Bahadur', 'Kamon Kore Totlami Sare', 'Kartik Pujor Bhoot', 'Der Dozon Jahagi', and 'Madhureno Somapoyet'. The three main character of this series, Atal, Patol and Nakul, won huge popularity among the children and youngsters.
Pinaki Roy, who has offered post-colonial interpretations of Bengali detective fiction, gives primacy to Roy more as a writer of sleuth narratives than of children's literature. Pinaki Roy credits the litterateur for initiating a trend which would ultimately bring Bengali detective-story-writing from its colonial phase to its anti-imperialistic one: "Jayanta, the detective-cum-scientist, is probably one of the earlier fictional Indian sleuths who use their Indian sensibilities to capture Indian criminals operating in what could be idenfied as an 'indigenous' atmosphere.

বিমল, কুমার,বাঘা, রামহরি, বিনয় বাবু ও তার মেয়ে মৃনুকে নিয়ে তুষার মানবদের দেশে অভিযানের কাহিনী হিমালয়ের ভয়ঙ্কর। খারাপ লাগবে না, আমার মোটামুটি লেগেছে।
এর বিষয়বস্তু এরকম - বিনয় বাবু তার মেয়েকে নিয়ে হিমালয় বেড়াতে যান।কিন্তু সেখানে মৃনু কে কারা চুরি করে নিয়ে যায়।মৃনু ছাড়াও বেশ কিছু মানুষ উধাও হয়ে যায় - এর পিছনে নাকি কোনো রহস্য থাকে। বিমল কুমার উদ্ধারের জন্য সেখানে যায়। তারা প্রথম ক্লু পায় জঙ্গলের মধ্যে বড়ো কোনো অমানুষিক জীবের পায়ের ছাপ। এরপর একে একে বিনয়বাবু, রামহরি, বিমল ওই দানবদের হাতে বন্দী হয়। পরে কুমারও বন্দী হয়। সেই দানব রা সপ্তাহে একদিন কুকুর দেবতার পুজো করে ও একটা করে নরবলি দিয়ে সেই মাংস ভক্ষণ করে। এদের হাত থেকে উদ্ধারের গল্পই এর সারমর্ম।

Bimal and Kumar go to Darjeeling to find Vinay Babu's daughter, who has gone missing. While searching in the area where she was last seen, they discover the body of a local Lepcha with a giant footprint beside it. It seems PREPOSTEROUS, but they even hear a roaring sound, POSSIBLY of a giant. Bimal feels BUTTERFLIES IN HIS STOMACH. He decides to start their QUEST from here. But LITTLE DO THEY KNOW, something bad is waiting for them.
After two days of searching for Mrinu in the jungle, their servant Ramhari goes missing, followed by Vinay. Kumar begins to fear for his life in this LONE place. But what he sees next is beyond belief. Kumar's heart SKIPS A BEAT when he sees the monster grabbing Bimal in its hand. Now, Kumar is alone. Technically, he is not, because Bagha is with him. With Bagha's help, they find the place where the giants have taken everyone. It's a hole inside a cave where Bimal, Ramhari, Vinay, and other people are being held captive. Inside, Kumar observes a strange thing—the giants are afraid of Bagha.
One night, they hear a girl's voice calling Bimal's name. It is Mrinu. She tells them everything about the giants. The giants REVERE dogs. The dog they were worshipping earlier was killed by Bagha, so they are now afraid of him. They also abduct young human females to take care of the dogs. During a festival, they perform human sacrifices with male humans. That is why everyone has been brought here, to this hole.
After hearing this, everyone realizes their lives are in GRAVE DANGER, so Bimal CONTRIVES a plan to escape while the giants are sleeping. It TAKES GREAT EFFORT to climb out of the hole using the rope brought by Mrinu. They are running A MILE A MINUTE. The giants become aware of their escape and start chasing them, but Bimal, using his WITS, devises a plan IN THE NICK OF TIME. While running, they also shoot at the giants, and it seems the giants are injured. Bimal jumps into the river and tells the others to do the same because the monsters fear water.

Breathless story as usual of bimal and kumar adventure. These are never old stories. It became more twisted when bimal was abducted by the unknown ancient himalayan creature called ramapithecarpus.
