Grannies, knitting and magical sheep combine in this heart-warming adventure from Elka Evalds!
Peter's beloved granny made cakes and knitted itchy jumpers - that's what he thought. But when she passes away and dodgy Jasper Fitchet moves in to their village, dark magic begins to unravel in Knitford. Can Peter and his gran's old craft group tie Fitchet in knots? With the help of her old motorbike and a flock of magical sheep, they might just do it ... so long as they don't drop a stitch.
It was an adorable story with knitting and magic within. It's such a unique theme. I really loved to read this book since the first pages and i really enjoyed to come along into Will's adventure. There's a bunch of magic behind a jumper Will's granny had ever made and it made someone named Jasper Fitchet to plan sometning bad up for the entirely Knittington Villagers.
I loved all of the characters either. Especiall for the gang of grannies. They really took my attention over. I couldn't imagine in my real life that there were a gang of grannies as powerful and energic as in this story, who could ride an old motorbike in high speed and got crashed without got seriously injured that they made me not to judge the book by its cover, ha ha 😂💪. They were so iconic and reinforced the story idea.
The story was simple yet it had some essential moral values. This adventure comprehended me more about friendship, bravery, power, heartwarming amongs the characters and awareness to come back doing good things after made a mistake.
For me, It was a sweet light story that i could executed it just in one moment-sitting.
I just felt in love with that gorgeous cover, and then when I read about knitting + magic, I was sold even further. I just had to have this book. And I can honestly tell you that the cover is even prettier in real life as it has golden threads (which are important in the story) throughout.
In this book our MC's grandma just passed away. She was a giant knitting person and she had knitted stuff EVERYWHERE, and not just her but our MC and his family also have plenty of them. But little did they know... that granny used magic and she gave a lot of her knitting something special. For instance those cute fluffy socks? Can make you jump~ That sweater you are wearing? It was just amazing that knitting could have such power. As the story goes on we learn more about this magic and also what kind of wool you would need to add some magic. Yes, you need special golden wool for it.
And then we meet a group of grannies who also knit, and who form some kind of coven of knitting witches. I just LOVED this group of grannies and I loved how kick-ass they were. But I also felt sorry for them as their leader, our MC's granny, passed away. They have lost a great friend, a wonderful person. Though I also could fell the sting as we learn that grandma was apparently not very free giving with information. I was a bit angry at that. I could imagine you don't want to tell those secrets willynilly, but when you have reached a certain age one would think that one would at least leave some information.
There is also a baddie and while I wasn't a fan of him that much, I loved how the author wrote him. His plans were crazy, but also kind of awesome. Yes, credit were credit is due. Plus, I liked the idea that he did the knitting by way of machines while the grannies did it by hand. Ok, maybe it felt a bit like machine = bad, hand = good. ;) He also wasn't ever giving up, and he kept going. Seeing the chaos that his projects were causing was pretty interesting to see, but also a bit sad for those people.
The story gets more and more magical with each page, and also more exciting. I loved seeing where the story was going and of course I was very excited about the ending. Would our grannies, our MC, and his new friend be able to save the day?
Big happiness points go to the sister. I am normally NOT a fan of tiny sisters and brothers. In general they are written with plenty of annoyance points and often they drive me crazy and I wish they weren't around. BUT in this one we actually have a little sister who was just the sweetest. Yes, she needs to learn that her brother wants to do some stuff on his own, but other than that she made the story more fun.
I just love the various knitting projects that the grannies did. I wish I could knit like that but I would really need someone to teach me all the harder stuff, and I don't have that. So I guess I will stick to knitting scarves, hats, pillow cases, and the likes.
I loved that while the book is pure magic and there is tons about knitting, it is also about family. About the loss of a loved one. How hard it is that in this moment when she is needed she is not around. About how to continue on with life.
The ending was fabulous and I was so happy with how it ended. We learn quite some more about our MC's family, about the villain, and I love that we also saw other witches... even the big boss. I won't spoil anything, but WOW I didn't expect the boss to be HER.
The illustrations were just magical and delightful, I love love love their style.
All in all, I could probably talk about this book for much more, but I will keep it at what I have here. I would HIGHLY recommend this beautiful book to all.
I fell in love with this story from the first chapter - an opening on grief, described with such warmth and loving was a perfect invitation to this tale of woolly jumpers and golden sheep. But don't let this cosy descrition fool you - with a wolfish villain and a coven of grannies there is peril in the purl. Born on the Isle of Man I was also delighted to be transported to the home of Cronx the cat! Thank you to the publisher for gifting a pre-publication copy
Another book that I listen through Storytel. Not gonna lie, I couldn't catch some parts cause I listen to it when I did my chores or work. But, overall, I understand the main story of it.
What attracted me the most about this book is the cover. I just love how they made a beautiful cover for this book. Then, the blurb is interesting enough to read.
Granny passed away. When she still alive, granny loved to knit. Therefore, Will can find so many of her creations around the house, start from jumper, cap, sleeves, or scarf. Even the animal knitted toy that usually played by Sophie. What will didn't know, those knitted thing by his grandma is full of magic.
Some day, a claimed closed of friend from Granny, Mr. Fitchet visited Will's family house. He looked friendly, but Will found him suspicious. Then, after he left, Sophie said she lost her dog-knitted-doll. After that, Will knows that there is something fishy about Mr. Fitchet.
Long story short, Will knows about Mr. Fitchet's intention. He want to steal grandma's magic thread. With the help of the other grannies, Will got to manage to defeat Mr. Fitchet.
For a children book, this books has a good story. It is easy to digest and understandable. The conflict itself reminds me of The Bliss Bakery story. I think, the story about a magic knitted thread is new. I have a feeling this book could get a sequel later, but we'll see.
Ahh, what I like the most would be the fact that Sophie is also being the part of the main solution. Even, she has a big role for the story. Glad she is not only the supporting role.
So far, I enjoyed this children book. Will definitely try to listen the other book.
Such a fun book! Obviously kids will love it too, but I found it a nice in-between read between some heavier books. Even as an adult reader, I didn't find it terribly predictable, and it has a good message. Oh, and as others have mentioned the cover looks great.
I'd give this 5 ⭐ if just for the abundance of knitting spread throughout the story It's basically just a story of knitting + magic. Unfortunately, I got a bit impatient, and quite bored, towards the end of the book.
I so enjoyed this book. I love the themes. Power to the gran, a small town coming together, and the magic of knitting ... also the humour is hysterical. A feel-good and creative story. Recommending to any kids anywhere (and those young at heart like myself).
A wonderfully knitted adventure for 8+ readers, or a great bedtime story for a younger audience. IT has the right mix of action, adventure and mystery to keep readers glued.
Buku buat bocah sebenernya, jadi cerita n konfliknya ya simpel2 unyu gitu. Tapi ya klo perajut nemu buku yang isinya pola magic, rajutan yang bisa memberi kebahagiaan pada pemakainya, club nenek2 geng rajut yang punya toko rajutan, pabrik rajutan plus domba2 emas ajaib tetep aja bikin happy haha..
Granny Magic- #fantasticbookawards nominee. Initially annoyed for it's smug, middle class twee-ness but actually turned out to be witty and rollicking fun.
I love it. Magic, knitting, the most lovable sibling pair ever, a motorcycling granny troop and a village hypnotised by commercial knitwear. I laughed. I teared up. I felt everything. Couldn't keep up with all the granny sayings but I whizzed through this! I can see this being read in lots of classrooms.
