Hemendra Kumar Roy

Hemendra Kumar Roy (Bangla: হেমেন্দ্রকুমার রায়) was a Bangali writer noted for his contribution to the early development of the genre of children's literature in the language. He was a noted contributor to the early development of Bengali detective fiction with his 'Jayanta-Manik'-stories, dealing with the exploits of Jayanta, his assistant Manik, and police inspector Sunderbabu. Roy also translated the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyám into Bengali. One of the best translations anywhere of Alice in Wonderland is Roy's Ajab Deshe Amala.

He is best remembered as the creator of Bimal-Kumar, the adventurer duo and Jayanta-Manik the detective duo. It was Bimal-Kumar's adventure story Jokher Dhan, for which he is famous in Bengali literature for children. He was a staunch believer in supernaturals and he used the supernatural element in several of his adventure and mystery stories. He was also a painter and the choreographer for Shishirkumar Bhaduri's Seeta. He created a comic series titled Tara Teen Bondhu, which consists of seven short stories such as 'Kukur Kahini', 'Nakuler Daon Mara', 'Maharaja Chor Churamoni Bahadur', 'Kamon Kore Totlami Sare', 'Kartik Pujor Bhoot', 'Der Dozon Jahagi', and 'Madhureno Somapoyet'. The three main character of this series, Atal, Patol and Nakul, won huge popularity among the children and youngsters.

Pinaki Roy, who has offered post-colonial interpretations of Bengali detective fiction, gives primacy to Roy more as a writer of sleuth narratives than of children's literature. Pinaki Roy credits the litterateur for initiating a trend which would ultimately bring Bengali detective-story-writing from its colonial phase to its anti-imperialistic one: "Jayanta, the detective-cum-scientist, is probably one of the earlier fictional Indian sleuths who use their Indian sensibilities to capture Indian criminals operating in what could be idenfied as an 'indigenous' atmosphere.

Kumar is cleaning his gun when his friend Bimal arrives unexpectedly, urging him to join an important journey.

Bimal recounts his hunting trip to the Sundarbans, particularly Mohanpur and Raipur, where he encountered tales of a gigantic beast terrorizing animals—oddly sparing cats and humans.

Curious, Bimal visits Raipur and, after two nights, finally spots the creature: a colossal, white feline with a black face and glowing eyes. He shoots it.

The next morning, he finds the dead beast—larger than a tiger, wearing a steel buckle and a broken chain around its neck.

A boatman approaches Bimal and shares a peculiar tale: he once ferried an old man with a roaring chest. During a storm, the chest was cast overboard, releasing a massive creature—likely the one Bimal shot.

Intrigued, Bimal discusses the creature and the enigmatic island with Kumar. They plan their expedition, guided by Kasim Mia—the same boatman.

Kasim’s crew, however, is terrified, believing the island to be haunted. Bimal tries to reassure them, suggesting the old man fabricated the myth to guard a hidden treasure.

Kasim reveals the old man returned to Raipur recently, furious about the beast’s death. Alarmed, Bimal pushes their journey forward.

On the island, strange phenomena unfold. Monkey chatter is followed by eerie poems sung in human-like voices, echoing warnings.

Kasim’s crew panics, threatening to abandon the expedition. Though Bimal retreats, he vows to return better prepared.

During their departure, they rescue a timber merchant who encountered a monstrous dog-like creature and a crocodile on the same island.

Back at Binay Babu’s house, Bimal declares his next expedition. Binay Babu, Komol, Ramhari, and Bagha join the quest to explore the “land of the impossible.”

More rhyming songs and unexplained noises reiterate ominous warnings: there is no treasure, only danger.

The giant Gorrila caught the group and they all lost their conciousness. After regaining conciousnes they found they are in a old building. Dharani has abducted him & he 'll kill for killing his beloved giant cat. They somehow escape from the buiding and it collapsed on Dharani.

Mystery Revealed: A local scientist named Dharani had reprogrammed the pituitary glands of various animals, transforming them into gigantic beasts. His brother-in-law became a towering gorilla, and monkeys were altered to recite poetry—explaining the eerie rhymes and surreal encounters on the island.
