I really hate GR mobile app! I started the review in the desktop version and was too tired one night to go to my PC so I added the review for the story I read that day and realised not that the mobile app removed all my spoiler taggs and &-signs I had in the entire review. Grrrrrrrr
All stories set (mostly if not entirely) in Christmas Thyme, Colorado around Christmas Map of the town inclued (only the Kindle app for android lets the map enlargable enough to read the street names or other notes, Kindle for PC or apple devices don't let you enlarge at all or only minimally) This book set was a great opportunity to find out if any of the four new to me authors are my cup of tea (unfortunatelly I liked only one, and want to look closer into another one) and confirmed to me the one author I already knew and didn't like wasn't a one off. Unfortunate was the fact the short story by the one author I knew and liked wasn't as great as I expected. Sadly I can recommend only one story of the entire series. All in all I doubt I'll re-read any of them but will see if I can get the single book editions for the 3 stories I liked and don't own already. As soon as I get these I'll deleted the book set.
#1: In the Nick of Time by Susette Williams 2* 1/2-1/3/20 (79) mostly ok but the last two chapters just destroyed this impression; stalking/obsession, murder; insta-love; MCs: Nicholas 'Nick' Claussen (FBI agent) & Faith Tillerson (teacher) - didn't feel the chemistry very much, development of the relationship mostly unrealistic, still I liked both characters
#2: Gabriel's Secret by Alexa Verde 3* 1/3-1/12/20 (166) mostly ok, though some of the inconsistencies/plot holes were so huge it was unbelievable, the ending was a bit too convinient, very many typos/incorrect words; stolen jewels; 2nd chance at love; MCs: Gabriel Lark (former detective, private hotel security) & Ava Davis (rookie undercover-police officer) - very intense chemistry with strong sexual undercurrents (nothing graphic), development of the relationship very realistic but still there's something that didn't ring true for me Alexa Verde is a pen name
#3: Guarding Candy Kane by V.B. Tenery 3.5* 1/14-1/15/20 (133) very complex though partially a little crowed plot with a big variation of topics and twists, all in all ok but a bit too rushed and not very realistic; attempted murder, murder, rape, ; insta-love; Sean McGregor (PI/bodyguard) & Candace (Candy) Kane (early ophaned illigitimate heir of an financial imperium) - so far my favorite couple with intense chemistry strong boundaries (physical and mental), interesting development of the relationship even if not realistic or too rushed secondary locations: NYC & Florida
#4: Murder: Up on the Rooftop by Lilly York 1.5* 1/15/20 (67) It's the 2nd cozy mystery by this author I read and disliked pretty much and again it was mostly the female main character I struggled to bear, the male main character that I liked very much & the interesting mystery were the main reasons I didn't go for 0*, especially regarding the numer or typos/incorrect words and some of the confusion in plot; murder, ; insta-love, unnecessary drama; Nicole 'Nik' Saynnt (inn owner) & Rudy Blitz (police officer) - I didn't feel any real chemistry
#5: Tidings of Joy by P. Creeden 3* 1/16/20 (45) All in all it was a cute cozy with a dash of romance though not very realistic and way too short for any kind of real development of the relationship, I could accept the flaws in the romance part but those in the mystery part were just too much for my liking; murder; long-term acquitances turned couple kind of romance; Joy Harper (reporter) & Jeremy Hunt (detective) - no chemistry set within one day
#6 Holly in Hiding by P. Creeden 2* 1/16-17/20 (86) Interesting premise & likeable characters but needs extensive work, could work as middle length novel so all plot elements can be developed accordingly, as short story only if the author decides to remove some of the ideas; online predator/serial killer; kind of insta-love but not enough interaction in romantic way ; Bethany Larson (café shop manager, Holly's sister and parental guardian) & Jonathan Stevens (detective ) - some chemistry
#7: Starr Witness by Susette Williams 2* 1/19/20 (46) the plot was promissing but way too rushed, the ending was too convinient and the entire solution felt unfinished, so many errors it was really painful; murder, murder attempt, witness protection; insta-love; Beth Starr (church secretary) & Mason Montgomery (police officer) - some chemistry starts in summer in Missouri (1st chapter)
#8 Noelle on the Run by Alexa Verde 4* 1/19/20 (63) this was the most fun, best written and realistic of the stories so far; murder, murder attempt, kidnaping (animal); insta-love that works!?!; Noelle Rochester (nurse) & Juan Rivera (PI) - great chemistry starts at a different setting within the US - though without any other details than it's a 4-hour-drive to Christmas Thyme
#9 Golden Belles are Wringing by Gina Conroy 3.5* 1/28-29/20 (262) If it were not for the many typos, wrong words and other editting issues it were a solid 4* or very weak 5* book. I liked the plot pretty much, as well as the main and vital characters but struggled with most of the minor characters - though I suppose that was on purpose. The romance was the weakest part of the story but mostly realistic . Out of the book in this series so far the most intense, deepest & solid in terms of Christian values, character development & life lessons; treasure hunt, murder; love at first sight, second chance at love; Belle Davis (former live in nanny) & T.J. Beadle (PI) - some chemistry
#10 Death by Figgy Pudding by P. Creeden 2.5* 1/31/20 (41) The general idea was interesting and promissing though I thought it was all too cluttered/too many ideas for such a short story, some parts appeared rushed, others were lacking details and overal rather unrealistic and obvious to me, the worst for me were the many typos (13 on 40 pages is just too much); murder, major spoiler:; no romance plot; Figgy (housewife)
#11 Sweet Revenge by Lilly York 2* 1/31/20 (73) This is the 3rd book by this author I read (2nd in this book set) and even if it's the one I disliked least I'm far from excitement, for a change I didn't dislike the female main character though I didn't love her as well, again I liked the male main character much more, the plot was too unrealistic for me and the plot holes/errors in the mystery part too big for another go at this author, the romance was so subtle it was more like the dance before the actual romance starts; murder ; extremely watered down variation of enemies-to-lovers (not really enemies but business competitors); Angel Manchez (gourmet chocolate shop owner) & Noel (gourmet chocolate shop owner, Angel's new competitor) - interest but too early to say anything about the couple's chemistry
#12 Merry Without Malice by P. Creeden 2* 1/31/20 (40) I'm dissapointed I didn't listen to my instinct and read this books as first of those by this author - the developments in the life of the main character's son indicate it was set before the other three which is double annoying since I'm so much OCD about reading series in order/avoiding spoilers (grrrrrrr), it's so sad the author let's the detective son look so incompetent and rather incapable to do his job, I liked some of the family dynamics and life lessons hidden in the plot but that was what I liked - after reading the 4 short stories I'm not planning to read anything more by this author; murder ; no romance plot; Merry Hunt (retired ER nurse) set within an evening *
This collection of books is written by several different authors, some of whom I've not had the chance to sample before. Varying lengths, the stories range from cozy to tradition with a teeny bit of suspense thrown in. There was only one book I gave up on because the writing didn't suit my taste, and I felt the premise was a little contrived. You might feel differently. I love collections and anthologies because of the opportunity to try new writers. I especially enjoyed books 1, 3, and 6. The male protagonist in Guarding Candy Kane is especially swoon worthy, and the matriarch of the family was a wonderful mixture of grace and strength! Even though the stories take place at Christmas time, they can be read at any time of the year. If you are looking for fun, quick reads consider picking up this collection.
Gabriel's Secret - Alexa Verde I enjoyed this romantic suspense story. It was a fun read with good characters and a nice mystery to solve. I love books by this author. :) Soon, I’ll have read all of them!
Noelle on the Run - Alexa Verde A lovely Christmas suspense read. I really enjoyed the cat character. This is the first I read in this book’s series.
Each one of these books was well done. Some a little scarier than others, but definitely mysterious. I loved that they were all set in the same town of Christmas Tyme. Highly recommend this collection.
I found the short stories packed with loads of info while short and sweet. I was glad to find some new authors to add to list such as V.B. Tener and P. Creeden.
Each story in this series is complete in itself and can standalone. The one constant is the setting. There is humor and definitely romance in most stories. I have enjoyed reading this series and look forward to more by these authors.
Enjoyed this book collection of murder mysteries . Each story was interesting and original. The touch of being in a small Christmas town made it really enjoyable
I discovered this book about Christmas mysteries. I’m really glad I found them. There are 12 stories and not a bad one in the bunch. I recommend all of the authors that wrote in this book and plan to go back and read more from them
