Just as enjoyable as the first two books in the series and that beautiful ginger cat on the cover is still the star of the show! He is a bit of a trouble maker but he also occasionally leads Poppy, the MC, to discover clues.
If cosy authors are to be believed then English village fetes are extremely dangerous affairs, so when Poppy goes to one I was ready for a murder to occur. And it did. However the cause of the murder and the culprit were well disguised and came as a surprise when unveiled at the end.
Both of Poppy's neighbours were good value in his episode. Cranky Nick showed his softer side and eccentric Bertie provided some useful gadgets for catching suspects. Poppy took some wise advice regarding her garden business and discovered a previously unknown talent for flower arranging which should make her some money.
So all is going well in the small English village and in Poppy's life. I am looking forward to seeing what happens next.
This was a pretty good mystery. I didn't immediately know the killer and was fairly surprised when it was revealed so that was a huge plus! The characters were interesting and there were plenty of decent red herrings. Poppy is getting more confident and Nell is a bit too nosy in other people's relationships but she looks out for Poppy. Oren got into all kinds of cat mayhem which is always entertaining and Einstein learns love with a high maintenance woman isn't always what you want.
I received a free copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.
Having enjoyed the first two books in this series I excitedly dives into book 3 and it was just as good as the first 2 books. Doom and Bloom starts at a village fête, where not only is Poppy hired for another gardening job, but there also is another murder.
I really enjoyed this third book in the series. It has another solid mystery, with plenty of suspects. Motives that are unclear and multiple people who are hiding something. It kept me guessing and so many people seemed suspicious or like they were hiding something. I liked how the mystery progressed. The reveal of who was the murderer came as a surprise as I was thinking in a totally different direction and there weren't as many hints in this person's direction, but it did make sense. I also liked how there were other truths that came to light as well and the suspicious behavior of other characters also made sense. It all was nicely wrapped it.
The mystery did have a slight case of incompetent police, which I am not a fan of usually, but it only slightly annoyed me a few times here. As the standard detective is away for a bit, another officer who jumps to conclusions handles the case. I was happy that this is only for one book and it was interesting how it shakes up the investigation and mystery dynamic a bit.
Another thing I love about this series is seeing how Poppy finds her place in this village and slowly starts her business. In this book she makes some important and big steps toward starting her business, but it's also clear she still has a lot to learn. I also like how she accepts advice from some of the villagers and it was lovely to see her business starting slowly.
I like the gardening theme of this series as well. It's fun to read about the different flowers and Poppy's gardening skills and also her mistakes. I have very little knowledge about gardening, so I feel like I learn some new things every time I read one of these books and can totally understand why Poppy makes some mistakes along the way. The doggy scent garden in this book also made for an interesting topic to read about.
HY Hanna always does a great job with the side characters too and this series is no exception. I've grown fond of the eccentric scientist Bertie, grumpy writer Nick, Poppy's friend Nell, the detective Susanne and many of the other villagers. As well as two great pet characters, Oren and Einstein. Then there are some new characters that get introduced in this book and a new pet as well, that fill out the cast. It was great to see how Poppy interacts with them all.
To summarize: This was another great installment in this series. With a great mystery that kept me guessing, a fun cast of characters and the garden theme this a series you don't want to miss if you like cozy mysteries. The mystery was a good one with plenty of suspects and it kept me guessing. the actual murderer came as a surprise to me as I was thinking in a different direction. And it was interesting when all the reveals come to light that explain some of the characters their suspicious behavior. I also liked reading about Poppy and her gardening adventures and how she makes some important steps toward starting her business. The side characters are always so fun to read about too. I am quite fond of Bertie, Nick the mystery writer can be both grumpy and helpful and the pets Oren and Einstein are a fun addition too. It's a great series so far and I had a lot of fun reading this book.
Doom and Bloom by H.Y. Hanna is the 3rd book in The English Cottage Garden Mysteries series. At the local village fete, Poppy is hired to create a "canine scent garden", only for the client's niece to be killed forcing Poppy into another murder investigation. A fun book especially with Poppy trying out her neighbour Bertie's spying gadgets and inventions in the course of her investigation. Poppy is gradually growing her business, branching out in creating wildflower arrangements. A charming and very entertaining cozy mystery.
Poppy Lancaster is such a refreshing and fun character! Although, I must say that Oren and Einstein are my favorite characters. Hyanna always plants great clues throughout the storyline, although she did stump me on this one. I really do love all her different storylines!
I am truly hooked on this series! Poppy and her absent-minded professor neighbour liven up this cozy mystery in so many delightful ways. Not to mention the harrowing tale of an unrequited canine romance. And the diabolical antics of one very smug feline. Plus there's murder and we're not short on mayhem -- sometimes bordering on silliness but still so much fun. Quirky and zany and just the kind of escape read (er, listen) to take into your garden.
I've become addicted to this English Cottage Garden Mystery series even though the protagonist, Poppy is not the sharpest knife in the drawer.
Poppy has inherited an English cottage and nursery from her grandmother and is attempting to revitalize the business even though as a city girl she knows nothing about plants and gardening. One has to admire her diligence and tenacity despite numerous mistakes.
She lives next to a hunky mystery writer who owns a naughty yellow cat named Oren and on the other side lives a wacky inventor who owns a black terrier named Einstein.
In this episode a murder occurs at a fund-raising fete for a humane society. Poppy of course gets more involved than she should. She is also hired to create a scent garden for a pampered poodle. Really given all that, what's not to love?
I can safely say that Doom and Bloom is my favourite book of this series so far. It feels that as Poppy is beginning to find her feet as a gardener, Ms Hanna has also really found her feet with the series, and this book is her writing at its best. There is just so much to like about this novel. Poppy and the other main characters are well established now and I continued to enjoy her, Nell, and, of course, the delightful Bertie. I have no idea how the author manages to think up all the ideas for his crazy inventions and quirks, and he’s truly a delightful character. And then there’re Einstein and Oren, Oren who produced my favourite moment of the whole book. I love that cat!
The mystery is well written and, as usual, I didn’t have a clue who the murderer was until the moment that Poppy works it out. I had had suspicions about various different characters as I read through and Ms Hanna does well with throwing in little “clues”, some of which are actual clues and some, red herrings. The mystery involves some very interesting and varied characters as well and was an enjoyable one to read.
I can thoroughly recommend Doom and Bloom and look forward to Poppy and friends’ next outing. A review copy of this book was sent to me by the author. All the above opinions are my own.
Doom and Bloom is another fun and lighthearted cozy mystery in the English Cottage Garden Mystery series by H. Y. Hanna. The series follows a down on her luck 20-something Poppy Lancaster after she inherits her estranged grandmother’s dilapidated cottage garden nursery. Having no experience with a plants, let alone an old-fashioned English Garden, it’s enjoyable listening to Poppy’s attempts to restore the nursery to its former glory.
Doom and Bloom picks up shortly after Silent Bud Deadly, wherein Poppy completed her first gardening contract at a beautiful country house. In this installment Poppy is hired to create a "canine scent garden” by an eccentric wealthy owner who takes “pampered pooch” to a new level with doggy yoga, facials, and spa treatments. When this dog lover’s niece is stabbed at the village fête, Poppy can’t resist but get involved in discovering who did it, eliciting the help from a few of her neighbors in the process, including the “mad scientist” Bertie (think Doc Brown from the Back to the Future movies) and crime fiction writer Nick.
What I like most about H.Y. Hanna’s stories are they are well written with likable characters and the mysteries are plausible with enough red herrings so as not to spoil the endings. I especially appreciate the narrator, the always impressive Pearl Hewitt. Pearl’s narrations make me laugh with her differing characterizations for all of the players. Simply put, it’s impossible not to be entertained by such a charming cozy mystery series!
Doom and Bloom by H.Y.Hanna is the third installment in English Cottage Garden Mystery series but can be read as a stand alone.
With time Poppy has learned a bit more about gardening and is usually getting better at it. So when the opportunity to create dog scent garden presents itself she is willing to overlook minor nuisances in order to make some money. Unfortunately while at the local fair one of the organizers, who happens to be dog owner's niece, ends up dead. Poppy decides immediately that things look fishy, what with dead woman's not so secret admirer, another relative desperate for money and other suspicious characters. At the same time she is trying to dissuade Einstein from having his little heart broken while keeping his owner from prison and Oren from being seriously harmed by Nick.
This has quickly become one of my favorite series. It has it all, outwardly charming but so sinister English village, peculiar characters and a bit of possible romance and not so experience sleuth. Mysteries are engaging and charming. Dialogue is funny and interesting. I especially like how humor is interwoven into the story. I would really like to see Poppy and Nick's relationship move to another level, as well as mystery between Nick and his father's relationship be explained.
Awesome. Another great read in the series that has a plot that leads you into blind corners and wondering who the killer is. A wonderful portrayal of village life and the eccentric behaviour we can all relate to. Whilst the characters add charm and lead you to wondering what they'll be upto next. The fete was being held on the grounds of the richest woman in the village. Okay she was a bit excessive in her behaviour towards her pampered pooch but her heart was in the right place. Now everyone was enjoying themselves - well except the antique dealers who had been knocked out by one of the balls she threw at the coconut shy. To make amends she hurried to retrieve his donations to the auction. Only to have the most superstitious woman in the village take to wringing her hands. A knife had set her off. Now there was a dead body in one of the tents. An arrest, Einstein making off with the pampered pooch, a missing phone, a dog's scent garden, ants in your pants, polymer pooch offering and more are mixed into a delightful play of small village life. But will it lead to finding the killer?
I really enjoyed this book and just love the whole series, it is a nice refreshing change for the book to be set in the English countryside. The characters are fun and quirky and I especially like the two next door neighbours and can't wait to see what the inventor comes up with next time, and this time a few of his ideas worked …. well sort of. Poppy is attending the local village fete, when a murderer strikes. Proving it is easier to kill someone then it is to knock a coconut off. Poppy is soon knee deep in the murder especially as she is hired by the murdered girls aunt to create a sensory garden for her pampered pooch and digs up the murder weapon. With the added fun of a romance (for the dogs not are heroine) things get really complicated and with the police dropping the ball it is up to Poppy to make sure the right person is caught. Even if that means she puts here own life in danger. I really enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down, caan't wait for the next book. Who knew gardening could be so much fun.
Finally Poppy is getting the credibility and confidence to grow her cottage garden and continue her grandmother's business as well as designing and putting together beautiful fresh bouquets a new side to her business thanks to nosy Mrs. Peabody's advice. We begin with a charity event on the grounds of Duxton House, where Mrs Farnsworth asks if Poppy would create a canine scent garden for her spoiled poodle, Flopsy. All was going well when there is a blood curdling scream and we are faced with a murder. As usual Poppy starts investigating on her own and jumps to a lot of conclusions. With the help of her eccentric inventor professor neighbor, Bertie and advice of her other neighbor, author, Nick she gets involved. There are quite a few quirky characters as well as characters you love to hate, like Kirby that makes this story line a page turner! A must read fun series. I received and ARC from the author but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
Certainly there are some funny moments in this book that made me laugh; but, I found this story a bit slow moving for me. It took me longer to get through this one. It did pick up quite a bit about 80% though. I did not guess the culprit which always makes for a good book. There really was a lot that I did not like this time including the indication of the "f" word a couple of times which really surprised me from this author. If anything keeps me from reading a book or no longer reading works by an author, that is the thing. I was also not the most happy with the abusive dog nanny situation, not the threat of Henry of having the cat out down. So, while I love the character Bertie and his dog Einstein, and the cranky writer Nick with his cat Oren, there were few things in this story that I was not as fond of and this the 3 star rating.
Poppy's settling into her new life in a small English village and is getting the garden together. There's a village fete where Poppy meets the owner of the house where the fete is being held and discovers that she wants a scent garden for her toy poodle. In addition, Poppy's receiving a lot of compliments on the flower arrangement she donated to be auctioned for the animal rescue benefit. Things are starting to look up for Poppy until there's a murder at the end of the day. Poppy's drawn into the investigation with the help of her neighbors Nick Forrest and mad scientist, Bertie.
This is a great story and we see a lot of Einstein, the terrier, in this book. Oren, the cat, has some great scenes as well. I loved this book, it's well written and we get to know more of the villagers. I highly recommend the book and the series.
Doom and Bloom (English Cottage Garden Mysteries #3), my 20th read/listen from author H.Y. Hanna & the third book in her new English Cottage Garden Series. An enjoyable cozy mystery. I love the narrator’s British accent; I was impressed and enjoyed the vocal variety & inflections of narrator Pearl Hewitt, especially her oh-so-cute animal sounds & really enjoyed the read. Cozy Mystery/romance, captivating primary character, what other blurbs can I use to describe these books? Oh well, buy the book, read the books, get into a good author and some good characters as I have. I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. This series is so good that we listened to it on Black Friday while traveling to our daughter's home in Toledo. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
What I love about HY Hanna's books is the fact that there is loads of humour in the stories. You just can't stop laughing at the various antics of the different characters. In the English Cottage Garden Mysteries series, the characters of Oren, Einstein and the eccentric Bertie keeps the whole story alive. You just can't expect what will happen with them around. I thoroughly enjoyed the mystery of this story and was kept captivated throughout the entire book. The only complaint I have is I thought Poppy was somewhat too big for her boots, taking on things which she can't manage just because she managed to do somethings right.
** I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions are my own
From the Amazon description: "Poppy is settling into life in an English village and gaining some green fingers at last as she restores the beautiful cottage garden nursery she's inherited. When she meets a wealthy dog lover at the village fête and is hired to create a "canine scent garden", the future looks rosy... until the day ends with a vicious killing and she finds herself spade-deep in a murder investigation once again."
Another great book in the series...and now I have to wait a few months until the next one comes out! Poppy has expanded her business to making cut flower arrangements and is doing well. She runs into a few suspicious folks in this one but again, she and I did not figure out the culprit until close to the end!!
Poppy has finally found her place in the village. Now if she could just conquer the coconut shy. Another great read by H.Y. Hanna. The characters of Poppy, Nell, Nick and Bertie are alive and thriving. Poppy's garden business is starting to take root thanks to the town gossip and the ideas she gave to Poppy at the fete. Nell has a new job thanks to Poppy's cousin. Nick is busy writing and as usual behind in getting his first draft to his publisher and what can I say about Bertie. From mechanical ants, cleaning the fish tank in boxers and swimming goggles to his latest invention, poo, well that you have to read for yourself, and of course murder. I always enjoy my escape to the English countryside and you will too.
Unruly Dogs Poppy is settling into life in an English village and gaining some green fingers at last as she restores the beautiful cottage garden nursery she's inherited. When she meets a wealthy dog lover at the village fête and is hired to create a "canine scent garden", the future looks rosy... until the day ends with a vicious killing and she finds herself spade-deep in a murder investigation once again. This is an awesome book filled with superstition and laughter. The culprit was a superstitious lady. The cat was very capable and the dogs were unruly. I borrowed this book from Kindle Unlimited. This in no way affects my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
Poppy secures another gardening job creating a scent garden for a local socialite’s pampered poodle. But the job is halted when one of the woman’s relatives is discovered stabbed to death at a village fete held in the socialite’s estate, and the murder weapon is found in the area where the scent garden is planned. The local inspector is in a hurry to wrap up the case and arrests a former thief, but Poppy discovers several clues pointing to other suspects. Poppy seems to be growing in confidence, and it’s nice to see that she’s not always naive and child-like. She gets help from her two neighbors, who have a history with each other, as well as the local handyman. I liked the way that several different seemingly unrelated incidents are brought together at the conclusion.
Another fun, entertaining mystery in the Gardening series by H.Y. Hanna. She is prolific and the books just keep on coming. The characters develop and build relationships as the storyline continues from book to book. Cute vivacious, Poppy is getting the hang of gardening taking over her grandmother's business. She has two cute animals that are part of the plot and two neighbors who are connected to the animals. One a handsome, author, and possible romantic interest?, the other an absentminded professor. Of course there is a police detective, this time a woman who Poppy can share information with. There is always a murder to solve so the fun can continue.
Poppy is up to her proverbial neck in village life, and finds new business opportunities, and unwelcome Beau. And wrapped throughout, attempting to solve the latest horrifying murder. Oh, and please let's not forget our favorite cat, N'ow, Owen, and Einstein, the wonder dog. Even if you've never read H.Y. Hanna's books before, you're in for a real pleasure. Her books are well-written, beautifully descriptive of village ,ife, and filled with great characters, which Poppy keeps having to reapprise her previous opininions of. Can't wait for the next in the series.
Love this book, the story is so much fun. The plot is well crafted and the characters are fantastic. Poppy is a great character and the situations she finds herself in make the stories interesting. H.Y. Hanna is such a talented writer and all of her book are wonderful and keep you laughing throughout. But, this series is especially endearing because of the delightful characters. Bertie is just on the edge of crazy, Oren the cat is a scene stealer and the rest of the characters make the story fun and entertaining.
