Will you be ready when the reckoning comes? After a grueling trip, Ben, Joel, Allie, her mother Sandy, and Gunner have reached their destination on the Eastern shore of Maryland. Ben is reunited with his two younger children who have been surviving with the help of their ailing grandfather, Jack and his dog Sam. But reaching Jack’s farm doesn’t guarantee their safety, however, and the struggle to survive continues. They must remain vigilant in their efforts to protect what is theirs, and the people they love. Ben is hoping for a chance to re-supply and get some much needed rest after their cross country ordeal, but fate has other plans for them. Jack’s stubbornness in accepting help and refusal to leave his farm means Ben must make a tough decision about doing what’s best for his children. They’re forced to prepare quickly for the journey back to Colorado. But will they all make it home?
Highly recommended, one of the best postal apocalyptic books series I have ever read.
Really enjoyed the book, there were a few mistakes in there, he had the fuel pump replaced not the alternator in the last book. One thing I don't understand in the book is why they don't post a guard when they stop at night while traveling. That's one of the biggest mistakes I believe they made. I really enjoyed the series, and I can't wait to read the next one. I plan on reading the rest of the books this author has written.
I have been reading this series from the first book and have enjoyed it very much. This one, not so much. There are a few pages in the middle where something happens but that's about it. The rest of the book might as well have been blank pages. Hope the next one is better.
This book seemed like filler in the series. The author went over the same thoughts and ideas too many times, sometimes without any variation. I became impatient for the action to move on, but basically this book ended the storyline about Ben reuniting with his kids and the decision to move on. And that was all. I guess there must be another book coming as their fates are left hanging.
The title should be “Ben Obsesses While Nothing Happens.” You won’t miss anything by just skimming through every 5th page or so. It’s almost all Ben perseverating about the same things over and over until you want to shoot him or throw the book against the wall. If there was a physical book. But that would be a waste of trees. Once again Ben is useless when it counts. In the supposed climax our hero the former Army Ranger sneaks up to a spot where he’s out of position to take the shot then sits there worrying about how his kids will feel about him shooting someone until one of his kids has to take the shot himself. From the position the Ranger had just left. And a sick old man has to take out the other bad guy because Mr. Ranger can’t get out of his own head long enough to do it. And when he’s finally standing there with his gun in front of the wounded bad guy The Hapless Ranger “can’t get a shot off” before the bad guy does. This worthless character would have washed out of Ranger school the first week. And the author keeps forgetting little distracting details: the fuel pump that had to be replaced in the previous book morphs magically into an alternator in this one. I am done with the series at this point. There are too many others in the genre that are better, even with the many other weak wannabes writing. I’ve wasted enough time hoping this author will improve but the books are instead getting worse.
I gave this series a shot but I've given up after this volume. Sandy is so one dimensional that I don't know a single thing about her, and the children introduced aren't much better. There is never a mention of their age, height, or any other identifying characteristics. Even Allie disappears into the woodwork at this point.
If you removed the self absorbed and repetitive introspection this book would be have been about 30 pages long and the entire series would have been done in one volume. Add in the idea of crops failing and withering after less than two weeks, gangs taking over after just a day or two, and most of the buildings reduced to ashes... It's just too much.
It's a shame, there is potential here. Perhaps with a good editor and honest proofreaders Miller can blossom into the decent writer that I've seen flashes of.
I am going to write this review for all 14 of the books in this series, because the positives and negatives are the same for each book. Each book involves at least one major challenge while the characters fight their way to family and then back home cross country. The challenges are definitely page-turners and I often found myself wondering "how are they going to get out of THIS one?" The main criticism I have is that the reader has to spend way too much time inside the minds of some of the characters, and these characters worry about the same things, time after time. There could easily have been less books in this series if all the re-hashing of anxieties were removed.
This series doesn't quit! It continues too be a page turner, I never lose interest and just an beside myself when a book ends. I groan aloud, Nooooo! Books 1 through 6 of the Dark Road series has never disappointed. They have captivated me, especially since I am a prepper, the books have presented options for preparing & potential senario's that may occur
occur. The books are great sources of food for thought. The character's are well developed. The plot realistic and the antagonists are most of the time surprising. I can hardly wait for book 7...
Things to know: There is some violence consistent with the situation. This is the sixth book in an ongoing series, best read in order.
Ben is a divorced father of three children. The two younger children have been staying at their grandfather's home. Finally reunited with them after harrowing travel experiences, he wants some time to recover and reconnect before returning home. Will the "new normal" allow him the chance to do this?
What made this story hard to put down, for me, was the heart-felt emotions and parental worries that anyone in this situation would have.
It’s an easy read, these books all seem to be the best case scenarios for this family. They always come out on top and with the best luck.
This book takes place where the last one left off at his father in laws place. His father in law just happened to have a generator and lots of guns and things they need not to mention another vehicle that that’s old enough to run but also in good condition to travel the country.
I’m still shocked it’s only been 2 weeks yet the entire world seems to have ended. I’m not sure how realistic that actually is but it’s a book.
Bad guys come to steal and the grandpa gets shot and dies, again things work out a little too perfectly in these books. Because no way the younger kids would have wanted to leave the grandfather behind even if he was dying of cancer. This just wrapped things up perfectly.
Then they packed up 2 vehicles now with 6 people and two dogs ti take care of

My first impression was that I was somewhat disappointed that this was such a very short volume and that the main focus was to tie up some loose ends with characters. There were a few editing issues (like telling Gunner the dog to heal instead of heel), but nothing too bad. As usual, the writing style is very good and in spite of my issues with the brevity of the book, I like these characters a lot and what to see what happens on the journey back to Colorado.
So I am not a writer, I am a reader. So I have been reading since I was young, but it really started in high school. I discovered science fiction!! I read every sci fi book in Willits high schools library. Robert Heinlein, was my favorite. Now I am reading your writing .it is sci fi because I believe it could all come true one day do you grok? One vet. To another carry on.
Reckoning: A Post-Apocalyptic Survival series (Dark Road). Is a pretty good follow up book. The author repeated himself a lot but that happened quite frequently with !most authors. The book kept my interest. I liked the story and characters. The author did a fabulous job of following the characters from one book to another. Usually I only read two books in a series and rarely three books. It surprised me that I read this forth book.
Finally the group reaches their destination! Ben, Joel, Allie, and Sandy arrive to the farm in the East from Colorado. Bradley and Emma are overjoyed to see their father, Ben, and big brother Joel. Jack, their grandfather, has been caring for Bradley and Emma. The break at the farm is exactly what is need for this little tribe. A great 👍 addition to the series!
A bit too dragged out, in my opinion. The story isn’t fast-paced and I’m more than fine with that, but this one could’ve been better.
I do hope the extra characters have more personality, and that the previous ones get more development too. It’s what I keep wishing with each book: more character development and more real personality. As it is now, everyone is too superficial… especially Ben, the MC, who is almost a superhero.
Overview: Ali, Joel, Ben, Sandy, Bradley, and Emma (with dogs Gunner and Sam) prepare their vehicles for the return trip to Colorado. Jack, who had been helping them with resources despite being terminally ill with cancer, stayed in Maryland in hopes of seeing his daughter again. When looters attempted to raid the property, Jack was fatally shot. Honoring his wishes, the group buried him beside his wife under the magnolia tree.

This book was disappointing in that it was so short and went over and over so many details. I could understand going over every little detail of a person's life if the book is 400 pages long but this book was 122 pages and I feel like I wasted my time. I do recommend reading all the previous books before reading this one.
I like the books in the series, they certainly make you think how you would handle yourself, in the same situation. The only part I don't like is the number of books and the length of books. Could have done with 2 or 3 regular length books. Am looking forward too the conclusion of the series. All in all a very satisfying read.
Another outstanding addition to the ongoing family survival saga. Bruno Miller is an excellent writer. He establishes the post apocalyptic world with a vividness that carries the reader along without cluttering the page with unnecessary words. Straight forward writing with a heart. I am a fan.
I love this series. Well written with characters you want to follow. The storyline is well thought out packed with action. .Ben has been on a mission to get to his kids in Maryland from Durango Co. Finally arriving he finds the kids and their grandfather safe. What will happen on the return trip back to Colorado time will tell.
The entire series of 6 books is good storytelling. As Ben and his son, along with Allie and her mother, Sandy, and of course their dog Gunner finally arrive in Maryland.
I hope this not the end of the series because there is so much more that can be told. They still have the journey back to Colorado and hope when they arrive back that their home is still safe.
I found this one a little bit slower. Maybe because it was predominantly set all in one place or because I flipped ahead because I couldn’t stand to wait to find out what was gonna happen. Ben is a Mary Sue, but I suspect this book is less written for literary value in more of an exercise and what would you do? I will be finishing the series for sure. I do hope they get home.

Book 6 picks up exactly where book 5 left off and it is such a good end of the world series so far. I love Ben’s realism in all of this and the fact that he doesn’t shield his kids from the reality of what this new world is. Joel is such an amazing character as well. He really grows up and does what’s needed for his family. Jack made me cry! And so did Sandy!
The book is so well done, it is like having a movie play in the mind. Characters are well established and very real. The plot is exciting. I love the dogs! Please write more books about getting the family to Colorado.
Will be waiting for the next book. I love your books, they are all well written and bring the characters to life. Keep up the good work but write faster. Thanks again Budgett
Loved this one the most out of all of the others by this author! It was well written and yet heartbreaking. Can't wait for the next book as they all head home!
All these books are so good and interesting. They make you want to read and read until you have finished the whole book. Can't wAit for The next one. Recommended to anyone who likes apocalyptic books.
I read the first 4 books a while back, and have patiently waited for each additional book as they have been issued. I've been pleased with my wait each time. I really like the way Bruno writes, and don't mind the wait.
This series is so heartfelt and gripping. It’s hard to put down, trying to gather your family up, keep them safe while the world is crumbling around you. On a scale of 1-10 and 11.
Now Ben and his family will head back west. I’m wondering if the women get a turn driving? Still have plenty of coffee which some people like. Can’t wait for The Next book.
enjoying this short series about Ben and son Joel, with friend Allie making way across country to get to Bens kids in Maryland. In this one, learn grandpa Jack is sick and prepare to leave the east coast as head back to CO.
