Voice of Life

Rate this book
The fourth and final book in the Spoken Mage series.

In her fourth year at the Academy, Elena should be focused on final exams and graduation. Instead, she has no choice but to stop a decades-long war—at least if she wants any future with Lucas.

But it's hard to stop a war when you're nowhere near the front lines. And an unexpected invitation—one she can't refuse—only complicates the matter further. Embroiled in political machinations beyond her experience, Elena will have to plumb the depths of her remarkable power and new abilities.

As she finally learns who she can and can't trust, she'll risk everything to win a future for herself, her family, and her kingdom. But if she makes a misstep, the price could be more than she's willing to pay.

She now feels incredibly fortunate to spend her time writing from her home in Adelaide, Australia where she keeps an eye out for koalas in her backyard. Her staple diet hasn’t changed much, although she’s added choc mint Rooibos tea and Chicken Crimpies to the list.

She writes young adult fantasy including her Spoken Mage series, and her Four Kingdoms and Beyond the Four Kingdoms series which are made up of linked stand-alone stories that retell classic fairy tales.

Wow! What a fantastic series! I found myself not wanting the story to end. I wanted more time with the characters and in the story world. I just couldn’t put it down. I enjoyed every minute of it.
Everything came together nicely in the end. The kingdom’s traitor, totally unexpected; Elena and Lucas’s love interest and the impossibility of it; the thirty-year-old war between Karlloway and Ardann; and lots of twists and turns that kept me engaged throughout.
I loved it. Five stars.

The final book in the SPOKEN MAGE quartet was among my favourites from this series! So much mystery! So much court intrigue! Such forbidden romance! wheee!

Melanie Cellier has really gone above and beyond the call of duty in this series, in so many ways - the worldbuilding, the political intrigue, the characterisation, the romance, it's all completely convincing. In this particular instalment, I found myself appreciating the unique and highly detailed magic system she constructed for this story. I realised, with some amazement, that it was an unusually hard magic system for a YA romance - and beyond that, that I was actually enjoying reading a fantasy with a hard magic system! I am astonished.

As I made my way further and further into the book, between delighting in all the story goodness coming my way (like everything at the Sekali court! and my new favourite character, the rascally and cheerfully self-serving JULIAN! and the way Elena's natural and adoptive brothers come together to make a deviously brainy team!) I found myself wondering just HOW all the different mysteries and plot threads would ultimately come together - quite often it felt as though there ought to be at least another book after this one! In the end, I did wonder if the resolution was a little rushed, with large portions of the final chapters dedicated to exposition, almost like that obligatory scene at the end of a detective story where the Great Detective has to narrate his solution to a marvelling audience. But that's a pretty minor complaint. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this series, and loved seeing the impressive amount of skill and craft Cellier has put into it.

So, so good! So much happened, I really can’t collect all my thoughts to put it in a review. Wow!

I’ve spent so much time with these characters lately that they really do feel like friends. Elena, Lucas, Corale, Finnigan, Saffron, Araminta... all of them. This finale was absolutely awesome.

I thought the other ones had plot twists!! Wow, but this one. There were soo many twists and turns I had no idea were coming. The surprise was thrilling and shocking all at once. Actually, these books have put me in shock quite a few times. 😂 I never knew what was going to happen next therefore I could not put it down... so that is the excuse I have for walking around a bit in a daze after finishing this book.

Ya know the feeling you have when you’ve come to the end of an awesome series, a series you’ve become attached to the characters and world becomes you’ve spent so much time with them? That’s the feeling I had finishing this one.

I really had no idea how things were gonna work out because things were not looking good at all... but everything wrapped up with that epic ending. Seeing all of the characters come together in the end was the best. That part was just the highlight. I loved it. It was also so bittersweet for me. These teens had grown together over the 4 years. They’d all changed and grew and things had happened. I LOVED the character development in this series. It was absolutely wonderful and possibly my favorite part.

Anyways, this book was fantastic. 4.5 huge stars!

I can't believe this amazing series is over!! I'm definitely itching for a re-read to see how this author set up all the twists in this book that totally blindsided me, and I don't get blindsided like that very often.

This whole series is so good! It hits many of the magical academy tropes, along with the "chosen one" type tropes, yet it uses those tropes to its advantages.

By this book, Elena, Lucas, Jasper, Coralie, Araminta, Finnian, and all the rest are such familiar characters that it feels like returning to old friends. I loved how Elena learned to balance her old family and new.

And this plot...wow, just, wow. I was at about 75% through the Kindle version and there was SO much left to happen, I wasn't sure how it possibly could get resolved in that time!

I highly recommend this whole series, and I've heard the author is planning to put them out on audiobook shortly. So I'll be sure to add what I thought of the audiobook as soon as I re-read them all when those release!

I loved each and every book in this innovative series, but I was disappointed at how the love story arc finished. It kind of fizzled, and that's what had compelled me forward through the series. I had hoped for a grand finale with the prince sweeping Eleane up in his arms before everyone, etc and boldly proclaiming his love, or at a minimum feeling the feels of a love that had been constricted to that point, being released and experienced by both characters. Alas, it was not to be, but it was still a good story.

Visu savu līdzšinējo 16gadus īso vai citam jau garo dzīvi Elena no Kingslijas uzaugusi pasaulē, kur rakstītam vārdam piemīt maģisks spēks, kas diemžēl ne visiem pieejams un parastā cilvēka rokās, prātā nāk vientieša termins, pat niecīgs viena vārda mēģinājums to uzrakstīt var beigties katastrofāli ne tikai personai, kura šo vārdu mēģinājusi rakstīt.

Unlike many others who have reviewed this book, I found it to be somewhat slow for the first half. It is still enjoyable but not too terribly much is happening. Things really do pick up around the half-way point, however, and then it really becomes interesting!

There are a couple of places where the author could have succumbed to cliche and sent Elena on an obvious (but book destroying, IMHO) path that lesser authors may have allowed. BUT… she didn’t!!! And I am SO grateful because of it. Instead, Ms. Cellier found new and innovative ways to forward the plot and the suspense. It was great fun to read and ended in a perfectly satisfying and sigh-worthy ending.

This one was the best one of the series! What a wild ride!!! If I hadnt already read the companion series I would start it right now.

This book started a little slow but picked up and continued to build to a climactic ending. This is technically the end to the four book series but there is a “companion novel” book five and I will continue with that. Things wrapped up nicely so you don’t need to read book five to feel some closure but I like the characters well enough I am interested in read more. The only thing I didn’t like about this book was that a big chunk of it excludes Lucas and Elena’s classmates but it was still exciting and hard to put down in many parts. I recommend the series. Elena’s character developed to a point that I like d her much more than I did in book one and the supporting cast of friends were all awesome.

I liked how the author ended the "series" with this book, wrapping up the main girl's story, giving her a sort of "happy ending" and yet writing more books building on the world she had created. There were a few parts in this book where I had to roll my eyes, but overall it was a nice "ending".
I plan to read the supplemental book, or whatever it's called that happens after this one.

Definitely am not ready to let go of this series. I grew attached to the characters what can I say. But all in all love series like these. The idea the author had with the whole creating with words concept was a great idea but I feel like she failed to put limits on these powers and kinda made Elena pretty much indestructible. The idea was there but it could’ve been developed thought out and kinda weaved in better. But I still enjoyed reading

Great Conclusion to a Great Series

Part of me is sad that this series is over. I will miss Elena and Lucas. Part of the appeal of this series to me was that it never forced any romances drastically. It might be obvious where it was going to end up but there were many probable issues in between. I think parts of the plot were definitely forced or coincidental. There is no way many aspects leading up to the end could have happened. I mean, captured but saved miraculously a few hours later without anyone knowing? The last quarter of the book was partially to fast to make anything make sense. In the last battle, I barely understood some of the terminology used and had to reread a few times more than I liked.

But who am I kidding? I really enjoy the story even with its predictability. Elena is sometimes irrational but also kindhearted and loyal. It is very hard not to like her. Her friends are supportive and like able too. They aren’t underdeveloped or only present for Elena like many other books add sidekicks for. The world building is imaginative and I liked the contrasting perspective on the northern Empire.

One thing: although it makes sense given her power, I wish Elena had spent more time at the academy since that is were her adventures originated.

READ THIS BOOK SERIES!!!!

This was incredible! The twist where we find out that the Ellingtons are the traitors killed me. I was not expecting that. My mouth literally fell open, I dropped the book, and was like no, no, no, no, NO! After I read that I still had hope that somehow maybe Walden didn't betray Elena. But I knew that if I thought about it, all the signs pointed back to him and his family. It was sooo sad! After all they have been through, been traumatized by, this just had to happen!?!? Now they all will have trust issues. Like really? Walden, her mentor. her friend, an amazing character had to be the traitor? (well yes that's what made it amazing, but still...) This book was so well planned out. And I loved seeing a series about the same characters, after reading the Four Kingdoms and Beyond the four Kingdoms series. This series had the best ending I could have hoped for! Can't wait to read Power of Pen and Voice too.

Nice conclusion to the series. I do have to wonder though why nobody ever shot fireballs at the spells before the papers could be torn to prevent their working, seems like a perfectly reasonable solution to me, but whatever, guess it wouldn't have been as exciting if someone could just burn your spells before you could release them.
I'm also wondering why the locking away of mage power couldn't be reversed. I mean, every other spell has a counter, why not that one?
Anyway, regardless of these nitpicks, I found the story to be a good one, and I suspect most other fantasy or magic fans will find the same.

The ending was as satisfying as each book in the series has been. There are impossible conflicts in every book but the overarching storyline progressed steadily and the conclusion was wonderful. I could not be happier with this story and now I have to try out Cellier's other stories because I know her to be an excellent author.

So, I binged the second, third, and fourth books...XD I need to go back and review the previous two, but while this one is still pretty fresh in my mind, I'm going to do this one.

I've enjoyed this series quite a bit. Elena and her friends grew on me more than I realized until I got to the end here. It's been a fun journey to watch them all grow together and in their world, to impact change and to learn to trust one another. I was a little startled at the midpoint to leave so many of them behind, but should have known to trust Cellier.

The second half of this story was a whirlwind! There was one reveal I'd speculated about for a book or two and one twist I called, too. But otherwise, I don't know that I've read a book with so many twists and turns--and they all made the ending such a rush! The second half sucked me in! Deeply! It was an intrigue and actually a really cool way to bring all the strings together and close out the series. There were some places I wish we'd spent more time in so it wasn't all crammed into the last half of the last book, but there were also things that Cellier was clearly setting up in previous books, which was cool.

I loved seeing the struggle in some of the characters to choose their loyalties and make decisions. The politics and war with right and wrong. It was neat to explore two other kingdoms, one of which with a distinctly different culture. We spent such a short time in the other kingdoms, which again, I wish we'd spent more in earlier, but the plot pieces fit together so well for this one.

I loved watching Elena continue to grow--and not just in her powers, but in her behaviors and person, the way she related to those she loved and learned to trust them. The emerging themes of family were sweet. I admit, I was skeptical at first. But I liked the place Cellier brought things and I just wish we'd spent more time exploring those themes and struggles more deeply in previous books. Family didn't feel like a theme tugged consistently through the quartet, though it did naturally fit into the story, especially in the end. I wanted to dwell in the ramifications of Elena's family change longer. But perhaps she'll do a spin off one day.

Overall, a great conclusion to the series, and possibly my favorite because of those twists and turns and epic plot weaving! She not only surprised me, but it all worked together and nothing felt forced or implausible or out of place. Just too short!

Clean romance with nothing more than some heartfelt stares and a few kisses, no swearing, and mild fantasy violence. She does touch on grief and loss and the ramifications of the three decade long war, but in a delicate way. I'd give the books to 14+

Enjoyed this 4th book in the Spoken Mage series! Finally, the on going war as well as Elena’s relationship with the Prince reach a tipping point. For so long, Lucas and Elena have been fighting their feelings especially since Lucas is now betrothed to another. But, not all is as it seems when he and Elena travel to his future bride’s kingdom. Seeking a way to end a centuries long war, Elena finds the clues to her past and magic, a traitor in their midst, and a potential future she didn’t think she could have. With fast-paced action, romance, and quite a few twists and turns, this book will definitely answer all the questions as well as keep you turning those pages or listening for just one more chapter!

The audiobook version of this book is fantastic! The narrator who narrates the entire series is back and does a fabulous job distinguishing each of the characters and really bringing the story to life. Her voice is perfect for this series.

Highly recommend this book as well as the entire series! So nice to have a clean fantasy that you can definitely recommend to your teens.

Alright, so my thoughts on this series stayed the same. It was alright. The best part is the mages and their limit of power. Only through written compositions could they...cast. Cast was never a word used to describe it but it fits.

Now, the first half of this book was really good. I liked the direction but then, the second half of the book hit and it seemed like too much.

There was just so much happening in the second half. Too many reveals. I felt like we weren't properly set up for it.

But the ending was sweet and again, the idea of the mages themselves was really interesting. I enjoyed that bit the most.

2.5 rounded up. A fine ending to this series, if I don't include the side book with Saffron and Julian. I am curious about that one, because it'll at least be a change of pace from the past 4 books, with expanding on side characters and focusing on a different political conflict. The main romance is okay, its very chaste and slow burn. The last half of the story was fun, it's like now that the stakes are at its highest, Elena and Lucas are finally committing to plans, both with each other and with finally ending the war. Their relationship was the primary focus, but I wish there was more scenes with her friends, especially at the beginning of the series. It wasn't really until the end of the series that characters started acting like they were friends, and it was kinda weird.

The final conclusion of The Spoken Mage series is indeed satisfying enough. This book covers every mystery and every questions from the previous books. Not only that, we got to see a glimpse of Ardann neighbor’s countries, Sekali Empire and Kallorway.
Regarding about who is the main bad guy here is not that hard to guess but still hurts to read nonetheless.
The friendship is portrayed well in this series, the kind of friendship I would die to have.
Lucas and Elena’s journey is not an easy path but their struggle, determination and motivation really paved their way to be happily ever after together.

It was perfect. How every narrative thread came seamlessly together was brilliant amd exciting to read. The conclusion of the Spoken Mage series was one of the most satisfactorily I have read for some time. Mrs. Cellier has to have had outlines the whole main plot over the four books. There was never a logical break and she did not forget any mystery thread from her first books in this series. Everything came together in the end and was solved.

I was a little sad to finish this one because I have grown so attached to the characters, their magic and the kingdom that I didn't want the story to end. I did not even come close to guessing the twists in this one as I had in some of the others, although I knew how it would end. Just not how to get there lol. Loved this series and I love how clean it was in every way except for violence. And even then, the violence was relatively mild.

YES I read four books in four days, and NO my house is not clean.

I really enjoyed this series (obviously)! Elena’s power + the word-based magic system as a whole was really cool, and the magical academy vibes were just fun. Plus a sweet, slow-burn, forbidden romance, lots of politics, plenty of action scenes, great side characters — I highly recommend to anyone who likes those things.

This series was so fun! It had major Harry Potter vibes at first, but with more fantasy and romance. I absolutely loved the world building that grew in this book, and I loved seeing how things resolved. We went on a wild ride and there were so many fun twists. I'm excited to read the companion series so I can have more of Elena, her friends, and her world ❤️
