House of Kaimar #2

The Monarch's Mate

Rate this book
My life sucks.

All the other human breeders have males who are head over heels for them, but do I get that? Nope. Not even close. My alien is the future king of the Dravian race and believe me, he acts like a royal jerk.

Yeah, sure, he’s hot as hell, but that is not the point.

Anyway, I’m still trying to figure out how to get him to do what I want when I stumble onto plans for an assassination. I decide to get involved because if anyone is going to kill the sexy prince it’s going to be me. Especially if he calls me his “namori” one more time. Whatever that means.

So now I’m trying to keep us alive, but he’s making everything difficult with his kisses and his... well let’s just say I better keep my mind focused and my legs, er... mouth closed.

Miranda Bridges began sneaking romance novels as a teenager and did not confess to reading them until she became a legal adult. After years and years as a voracious reader she woke up one day with a story in mind. She decided to write it down in order to silence her imaginary friends, but they’ve grown in number and have gotten louder. When she is not reading, writing, or drinking coffee she is taking care of two princesses who are of a reading age. Needless to say Miranda is still hiding romance books around the house, but now some of them have her name on the cover.

Hated it. H had an harem. h was supposed to have a backbone but unfortunately it disappeared between book 1 and 2. What a doormat. It's technically safe but H refused twice to get rid of the harem. Jerk.
Didn't like any character.

Ah, the good old days when men just wanted to get in your pants for sex, not to have alien babies.

I love Morgan so much. She has the filthiest mouth and is teaching her new alien friends to curse. Zaden and Morgan were great together. I loved all the drama that came back at the capital with all the wealthy old aliens in charge. They’d rather their race go extinct than have to breed with a human. Jokes on them!! You can’t fight if you’re dead. Or die out. Go extinct. Whatever. I’m glad there are forward thinking aliens that would rather mate with humans and live. This story was so much juicer than the first. There was a harem. A really angry harem. Morgan was not going to take any of that shit. She had ultimatums that Zaden had no choice but to follow. Did I tell you I loved Morgan...because I do. She was fairy and foul mouthed but also very caring and will make the best Queen.

And gargoyle aliens were introduced. Gargoyles!!!!!!!!

Quick reread because I decided to finally finish the series. It was an enjoyable read but it's more fluffy than serious. Almost each book has a wannabe OW, but they don't generate any real drama because the H isn't in to them. There's and overarching coup d'etat subplot throughout the series.

***Original Review***
3.5 Fluffy Alien Stars

* My rating is for the genre, if you aren’t in the mood for fluffy, somewhat comical alien time… this might not be for you*

The Monarch’s Mate is the second book in the House of Kaimer series, which is about an endangered alien race (females barren) hooking up with humans for mates. Each book follows a new couple, and they ALWAYS end up preggers by the end. I skipped book 1, because I find the first book in these forbidden/first human-alien relationship series slow moving. They have to pave the way for the future couples, which is needed, but boring.

Here, we have Zaden (the future king) and Morgan’s story. After reading a few reviews, I thought this would have hella drama. It’s hinted that he ignores her, and has a harem. Unfortunately, it didn’t shake out dicey, so it was pretty light on the drama. First, at some point in the first book, it was determined that Zaden and Morgan are mates, and she’s open to it- no drama there. Next, he hasn’t been partaking in the harem, and it was set up for maximum breeding potential of heirs… not playboy prince shenanigans. There’re a couple of lurkers, but the h is not threatened or bothered- no real drama there. Finally, he doesn’t really avoid her. He’s busy deflecting a war, but that is only for the first afternoon. Then he’s pretty much besotted- no real drama there.

Bottom Line- A quick easy read that had some mystery, a smidge of wannabe ow drama, a smitten H, a receptive h, and some steam. There’s nothing heavy, it’s light, and quite short. I'm rounding up, because for fluffy-smut, it's a solid read.. and served its purpose... keeping me entertained between ball games. (interesting, but not so engaging that I missed my kids play) Summers for me are busy, and my free time is choppy, so heavy duty reads are tough sometimes. (I can get really bitchy when I'm interrupted from a great book) Perfect for what I needed, but not if you’re looking for any feels. I am going to read the next book, because it looks like her mate is already engaged… 🤞 for drama.

2.5 stars

In the previous book, Morgan and her best friend were captured by elfish aliens AKA the Dravians. It turns out that their Prince Zaden might be Morgan's mate. But Zadan has a harem of women 😂 And Morgan insists on monogamy.

Again, you must suspend disbelief. Like in the first book, self-awareness seems to be a prevalent theme. The girls kidnapped by the aliens openly talk about Stockholm Syndrome and being brainwashed into accepting this new world and their new roles as potential "breeders" or "mates." Some of them want to find their "happily ever after" with an alien, while others would prefer returning home to Earth. But the girls don't really have a choice except for staying on this planet. Despite this lack of choice, the girls are happy? Happy-ish? It's all very strange.

The only way to enjoy this series is by completely suspending disbelief. I'm hoping the Dravians will eventually give the girls to choose between staying on this planet or going back to Earth.

Morgan and Zaden's romance is pretty much based on insta love. The harem drama was fun and interesting, but the political and courtroom drama was boring and over the top for me. Morgan and Zaden had good chemistry together, so that kept me going. But otherwise, this book wasn't anything special.

I liked this one a whole lot MORE than the first book. I felt like I got to know both MC’s even if this is told only from Morgan’s POV.

Now I’m intrigued about Makayla and her gargoyle. Will hunt up if she’s got a book. 👍🏻😊

Zaden and Morgan

Morgan is feisty and Zaden is a Prince that actually shows emotion. The back and forth with these to is funny at times.

Unfortunately danger is always lurking either it is the Purists or the war with other Aliens. We will see what happens.

Quick(ish) Review

I didn’t realize I downloaded this at the same time as the first book in the series but then I figured what the hell, see if it gets any better.

Narrator: not really?

It trades one toxic trope for another but the characters have better chemistry. This could be due to the Male MC not being quite so robotic and actually expressing feelings. The story still has plot holes, but it is better than the first book. It’s still just ok, so I couldn’t recommend this.

Ok. Its officially official. I really like this author. Engaging and funny dialogue. The spin off world/series sounds just as good if not better! It looks like she has just started with only a few books under her belt which makes me excited but also irritated. Excited because i get to start something new and fresh, irritated because now i have to keep waiting for new releases. Im just finger crossing that she sticks with her great story telling and doesnt go the way of so many others that drop off and are simply pushing books out to push books out. It doesn't look like she will and with the spin series, it hints at all the stories this author has locked in her head waiting to be told. Super excited by this author.

These aliens and their mates have no fault.
Another amazing story I've more than enjoyed. There was more action in this book but it didn't matter. I would have liked to have had more Zaden there, he was great. I'm impatiently waiting for the next episode of this series.
My new favorite writer.

Dnf. I do not like books where the hero has a harem and pursues a mate at same time. The fact that he refused to give up his harem, is a very dick head move.

Bentornate, Fenici!

Mal approva.

Alla prossima, un saluto dalla vostra Mal.

So, I go through phases of books. Lately I'm into aliens and humans and the weird fascination I'm having of being abducted and becoming an alien queen. Too much?

I actually thought this was really good BUT I should have read the first book. I still was able to understand this one, but there were things that were brought up in the book that I think were explained in the first book. Kind of like world and character building of the alien's planet and the aliens themselves. So I do recommend reading the first of the series.

I loved her smart mouth. Morgan was a fun character to read. I think the thing I love most about these books (it seems anyway) is that the women who have been taken, all see to have had a degree for a good career. Yes!!! They also are able to apply it in their new settings which is so cool to me.

Bummer for me: it says the next book is Eleanor, but on kindle it gives us a peak at Makayla. I want Makayla because she's a brat like Morgan and I want to see her with the winged aliens!! I don't even really know Eleanor, so that must mean you get to know her in book one.

Morgan is a smart mouth girl who just wants to make the best of the situation and wants someone to love her unconditionally like her friend Lia has with another alien. The aliens have taken the women and have declared them "breeders" so they can try and save their race. The male aliens can end up "mating" to a female, even a human. Kind of like imprinting. Once it happens, no going back. There were typical mean girls but really not THAT over the top. I did like the communication once she stopped being childish and started listening.

I think I would read this again, even without the first book.

A Simple & Sexy Sci-Fi Romance

2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣4️⃣
I prefer the h in book one bc she's nicer, but this story is better since it has more action and intrigue. The novellas are easy to read, but they're also forgettable. That's why I'm writing a more detailed review.

🔥🔥🔥 I consider the sex scenes to be erotic-lite. There's some 💦, and a few c*nts and cl*ts, but not as much as other sci-fi romances.

🇲‌🇨‌🇸‌:
Prince Zaden (age?) is the future Dravian king, who's head of security and the armed forces general. He's a true alpha, both possessive and protective.

Morgan (mid-20's) has a criminal justice degree and is Lia's BFF. Her sob story: she left her abusive ex and her family who sided with him, to start fresh in Kansas. Now, she seeks a deep, all-consuming love.

🔸Morgan is sometimes funny but often annoying. She's willful, reckless, and foulmouthed, making her not relatable. She improved after she finally talked to Zaden and started being more reasonable.

The Overarching Plot: Dravians are dying out due to most females being infertile, and the rest taking years to conceive. Human females are needed to save their race. Zaden, Varek and Braxton (a doctor aka "Bones"), work hard to convince the king and the council the truth of this. Many Dravian don't want half-bloods.

🛑 SPOILERS BELOW 🛑

🇩‌🇷‌🇦‌🇲‌🇦‌

About 70% of the story: Morgan makes assumptions, refuses to talk to Zaden, and often runs off in a huff.

Morgan thought she was pulling a fast one by secretly getting the Novar language download, but Zaden knew all along. There's drama over Zaden's harem and Huxley, the harem leader. He wants an heir, but he hasn't been with anyone since learning about Morgan.

Morgan runs into Zaden in the harem room, not knowing it’s him, and is turned on by his sexy words and actions—one of my favorite scenes.

🇮‌🇳‌🇹‌🇷‌🇮‌🇬‌🇺‌🇪‌

Ximena, in the harem, is in love with Quin from security. They’re mates, and X is pregnant. (This is taboo bc of X being in the harem.)

The Purists are insurgents who want to stop humans from being used as breeders. Ximena's father is one of them, and he wants X to get close to the prince to help bring him down. X is an unwilling pawn, only doing it to save her sister. Morgan learns that Zaden is in danger, but he's smart and already knows all about it.

Despite knowing Zaden hasn't been with anyone, Morgan calls him a man-whore and continues to assume the worst. When she sees his eyes turn black, she thinks he's mated with Huxley. She runs to Lia's house, but Lia and Varek can't talk sense into her.

Lia, using her psychology degree, helps the human women adjust to their new lives. Zaden arrives to get Morgan, but she lips off to him. Like in book 1, Morgan needs to be convinced that Zaden truly wants her and that she's more than just a breeder. 🙄

🤣 Funny Scene: Zaden walks around, unashamed, with a hard-on. When he goes to disband the harem, Morgan stands in front of him and says:
"Your cock is going to poke someone's eye out. I thought it would've gone down by now, but apparently it's made of steel. There's no way I'm going in a room of women with you in that condition. All they'll do is stare at it, and that's not okay with me."

Ximena becomes Morgan’s handmaiden and friend. Morgan protects Ximena from her evil father. After Quin arrives and kills him, he's arrested for killing a council member. Morgan works hard to save Quin, spending a day in the library studying ancient laws.

Quin's trial is my favorite scene. I liked how Morgan saved his life by revealing that he and Ximena are mates, X is carrying his unborn son, and her father was abusive. These facts won her case.

At the MCs' engagement party, the Purists attack. The king is killed, and Morgan is seriously injured by a sword and taken for surgery. Afterwards, it's learned she's pregnant, which makes Zaden even angrier.

Now that Zaden is King:
▪️ He has to stop the Purists/insurgents.
▪️ They prepare for war with the Yalat.
▪️ The women are taken to the palace for their safety.
▪️ Dravian allies (gargoyle aliens) arrive.

In the final scene, Huxley and Zhari kidnap Morgan, planning to hand her over to a Purist. Huxley naively believes she still has a shot with Zaden. Zhari helps Morgan escape but is stabbed in the process. Huxley and Zhari are then arrested.

💖 FINAL WORDS
▪️ “All I’ve ever wanted was for someone to love me and for me to love them in return. That is my idea of a happily ever after.”
▪️“And have you found what you are looking for?” he asks, gazing at me with such tenderness and love that my heart nearly bursts.
▪️“Oh yes,” I say, kissing him fully. “To infinity and beyond.”

I honestly thought this book would end up being a DNF. Color me surprised when it turned out to be a good read. I liked the characters, the story, and the romance. The court scene where Quin's fate hung in the balance, was well written and very interesting. It was one of my favorite scenes.

Morgan was feisty, and I LOL'd at some of the things she said and did. She spoke her mind, but also got put in her place at times. Zaden and Morgan were a good match. He held his own as a strong alpha and leader.

My only complaint is that the books end with the women being pregnant (book 3 does as well). I want to see a baby born soon!

On to book 3...

*WARNING* story contains explicit adult content
Morgan is fiesty and sarcastic, she is one of my favorite characters. Zaden is strong and unlike the rest of the Dravian males, he is perfect for the amazing Morgan character. Ms. Bridges did an excellent job with the personalities of these two characters. I think there could have been more world building to make the story more vivid, but it was very entertaining. Characters from the prior book is mentioned, but not reading book 1 will not hinder. This can be a stand alone with no problems.

I was fairly bored by the story itself, but the narration of the audio book kept me going. The new to me narrator had an amazing story-telling ability, and her inflection was spot on for what was happening in the story. This is the second book in this series that I've read now, and I'm pretty sure that the storyline isn't drawing me in, so I doubt that I'll carry on, but I'm glad that I found another narrator that I like.

I really liked this book. I loved the expanding of the world and the government system, meeting new characters, and discovering new challenges and obstacles for these characters to overcome.

What I Didn’t Like- Just like with the last book, I felt like the romance was a little rushed. I wanted more development from Morgan and Zaden’s relationship. It felt like they went from barely knowing each other to having sex, being mates, and loving each other way too quickly.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I will definitely be continuing the series. I’m SO looking forward to Kade and Eleanor’s story! Plus, this book got me really curious about the spin-off so I might start that one as well.

Liking the hot alien elves!

I do like this series, there’s just a few things that bug me, like how scarce the females are but they don’t seem to be a protected class??? Love how Morgan is planning on using her criminal justice training though. Also hope Braxton aka “Bones” gets his socks knocked off by a strong willed human mate. Can’t wait to see someone get his knickers all in a twist.

It saddens me to rate a Miranda Bridges novel so lowly. But, this book is nowhere near as good as her more recent work. Zayden was a great hero. He is sexy, honest, protective, and an alpha while still being emotionally available. The heroine, Morgan, was so annoying. What was Miranda Bridges attempt at making her independent and funny comes off as annoyingly sarcastic, crude, foul-mouthed, and often foolish. Morgan makes knee-jerk assumptions about things that could very easily be solved through communication. It is odd how she determines something in seconds and then builds a whole house around her misguided assumptions. She is so immature in this way. I dispel a lot of reality to read this genre. But, Morgan does something so stupid and unrealistic--even for sci-fi romance. When she overhears something that the Prince should know, she decided to keep it to herself--as if she can protect him. It is the dumbest plot point and really made no sense with the story being written. The story itself is lacking until the last 25%. Suddenly, the book comes alive and there is a real plot. It was very odd. This novel certainly suffered from poor pacing and storytelling. It was such a disappointment. Also, on the Audiobook, Rachel Music is the narrator. She usually does a great job. But her portrayal of this sarcastic and self-absorbed person was extremely irritating. I'd rate this a 2.5

Written in first person by Miranda Bridges, The Monarch’s Mate is book 2 in The House of Kaimar series, and follows the Dravian alien Prince Zaden from the house of Kaimar and his human mate Morgan. Morgan was studying at the Hays University, pursuing her criminal justice masters degree with Lia from book 1. Zaden was the crown prince and next in line for the throne on the planet Najarie, as well as the cousin of Varek from book 1. Zaden tasked Varek with abducting human females due to experiment 137-29, for the goal of viable copulation between the species, in hopes of procuring a successful pregnancy and therefore offspring to repopulate their dwindling species. It was a controversial mission that not only violated their laws, but the purists of his kind were against muddling their genetics, regardless of their males outnumbering their females 6 to 1. The mission also threatened to wage a war since Earth was located in the territory belonging to the Yalats. Even with those deterrents, still chose to abduct the group of fertile humans in hope of saving his species, with Morgan being one of them.

Dravians resemble elves in human folklore, with long white hair and pointed elf like ears. There are 5 houses of Najarie. The house of Kaimar is the oldest of the five, and their line tends to give birth to people who possess the gift of telekinetic abilities. The largest house is Mankoi because they possess the most Dravian females. The other houses are Tari, Fael, and Silae. Each one has played a significant role in Najarie history, and is why they are the only houses recognized. Novar is their spoken language, which can be learned by a simple retinal scan, though most Dravians speak English so it’s not necessary. Prince Zaden is from the house of Kaimar, represented by the braids in his hair, and he is one of the few who possess the gift of telekinesis. Over the years, the Dravians have quashed mating bonds through breeding to keep their species from experiencing feelings, which were viewed as a weakness.

Morgan was Zaden’s one true mate, verified by his eyes changing obsidian whenever his mate was in danger, and by his newfound feelings of possessiveness, obsession and jealousy. This is a big deal because of the rarity of mating bonds within their species. Once a mating bond is formed, infidelity is impossible and the ONLY thing that matters is their mate. The couple officially had sex in chapter 5, at the 25% mark. They f*cked super quick in the book, before they even had the chance to buildup through other sexual acts (kissing, fondling, flirting, oral sex, etc) prior to intercourse. I read this genre of books specifically for the raunch. Delaying sexual intercorse anytime after the 48% mark is like dangling the cheese so long it molds. I’m glad the author didn’t wait too long to get to the juicy bits, and rather preferred them getting down and dirty quickly. A Dravian’s kiss is like an aphrodisiac, making the woman’s body tingle and heat up from the point of contact to her clit. *sigh* What we wouldn’t give for that to be a thing. Am-I-right ladies? 🤪

So this book picked up where the 1st one left off, with Morgan knowing she was destined for the prince before The Phoenix landed on Najarie. Morgan went immediately to the palace, where his harem attended to her. Needless to say, the harem was full of cut-throat “mean girls” who wanted to be the Prince’s mate. While on Varek’s ship, Lia helped Morgan get the scan for Novar, so unbeknownst to the Dravian females, she spoke their language; which helped uncover plots against the prince. One of those plots was a council member using his daughter (and member of Varek’s harem) named Ximena to get close to the prince. Ximena hid her love for her actual mate Quin, a guard for the palace, in order to obey her father’s demands. Whenever she failed to seduce Varek, he beat her sister in punishment. Morgan, being a survivor of abuse herself, eavesdropped then intervened before her father could kill Ximena in retaliation for Varek dismantling the harem at Morgan’s insistence. When the councilman attacked Morgan, Quin stepped in and killed him, which put his life in jeopardy. But Morgan put her education to work, representing Quin in court, ultimately saving his life. Afterwards, the king (Varek’s father) was murdered during an attack on the palace by the purists. On top of that, a war with the Yalats was inevitable (coming up in future books) and Varek (now the king) called in help from the Boraqs (their gargoyle-like allies) for assistance. Morgan also got kidnapped by Huxley (the head harem b*tch who wanted Varek for herself) and Varek rescued her using her tracking implant. In fact, Morgan needed to be rescued a few times. 🤨 She ran away to be with her bestie Lia at one point instead of talking to Varek like a grown-ass adult. There was A LOT going on in this book, and I’m sure I missed a few key details. 😎 Oh… and Morgan successfully became pregnant with a daughter.

My biggest pet-peeve with this book (aside from the couple’s lack of healthy communication with each other) was the spanking. Spanking someone with a history of physical and mental abuse (which he knew about) is absolutely not okay. Even in fiction. Someone who used to get her ass beat on a regular basis is not going to get turned on by spankings unless the abuse turned her into a masochist. The fact that the spankings got Morgan wet made me question the author’s knowledge and maturity. Just saying. 🤷‍♀️😒 The line of consent wasn’t just blurred, it was blatantly crossed. At one point, Morgan vocally said “don’t” after she tried to get away from Varek and he responded by fingering her clit. No means no, and you don’t need a reason for the no. Period. Jesus Christ.

Overall, this series worth the read (so far) if this genre of books is in your wheelhouse. It had the perfect balance of adventure and romance. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. 😇🫶🏻

I would say 2.5 stars because really there were so many gaps like how the heck did the king die??? There was an incident at her engagement party and I know some swords were coming at Zaden and the king but he deflected them with his telikineses power or whatever and she never mentioned what happened to him it just flipped and were reading about Morgan in the infirmary and Zaden says I've lost my father I'm like huh?? And not to mention all these pregnancies that kept popping up like how the heck did Morgan find out about the girl being pregnant and not only that what sex the baby Was? Then Zaden announced she was pregnant also knowing the sex like is this some hidden talent they have Jesus so confusing and frustrating. Anyways it was an okay read and since it was free for KU subscribers I will go 2.5 stars at the most if I had to pay for it I never would have purchased it.
