A cold case heats up when a 9-1-1 call puts police at a Denver murder scene pointing investigators to the abduction of a Colorado teenager fourteen years before. The connection? A calling card—a single black pearl—is found on the newest victim. Is the murder a copycat? Or has a twisted serial killer, thought dead or in prison, returned to kill again?
The hunt for a multi-state killer is on and brings together an unexpected team: a Denver Major Crimes police lieutenant; an FBI special agent who investigated the previous murders, a rookie FBI agent with a specialty in psychology; and the only living victim of the Black Pearl Killer is now a cop.
For Special Agent Brian DiPietro, the case is an opportunity to find answers. For Officer Allison Shannon, the case will force her to face down the town that blamed her for surviving when another did not. And for both DiPietro and Shannon, it’s a chance to find closure to questions that have tormented them both for years.
I grew up in the 4-Corners area, in the city of Farmington, New Mexico. I love New Mexico, and am influenced by its rich Hispanic and Native American culture, and will bring some of this knowledge to future work. I also love Colorado of which I was a resident for thirty plus years.
Since my debut in 2010, I've added five more books and am currently hard at working on number seven.
I'm passionate about suspense and storytelling. I hope you'll join me as I write around the theme *SUSPENSE TOO CLOSE TO HOME*
This is my first book by the author but certainly not the last. I was engaged from the beginning in the Prologue and as the story unwound, it only got better. A joint task force is formed when a body found at an old hospital being renovated in Denver appears to be connected to a case from fourteen years prior in another Colorado town five hours away. Special Agent Brian DiPietro worked the first case and is assigned this case with the Denver Major Crimes Unit LT Everett Pope and his team. Brian also gets a new special agent, Devon Taylor and Police Officer Allison Shannon to round out his team. Allison is connected to the first case as a teenager. It was interesting to see how the different agencies work together to find answers. And wow, what an ending! I highly recommend this for those who enjoy cold case and suspense stories.
This was very entertaining and the last 1/3 or so was very intense. I am not sure I completely buy into the ‘bad guy’ but it was still a great read and well worth my time. The cast of characters added a lot to my enjoyment. Thanks to Snag-A-Read for the gift of this book.
Good thing I’m retired, since reading Black Pearl kept me up WAY past my bedtime. One more chapter … One more chapter …. This is a crime novel about people, not just about solving a crime. The victims are given deep respect, a sense of their humanity and the potential that was lost when their lives ended. The investigators are multidimensional, unique individuals. I grew quite attached to FBI Special Agent Taylor, a young man just starting his career, with his extraordinary talents and his boyish personality. I hope to see more of Denver police Lieutenant Everett Pope in a future book. He has subtle depth. The killer is a complex person as well, possibly the most original antagonist character I’ve ever read. Bell does a great balancing act between showing in-person and research-based investigations, keeping the tension high without excess violence. In fact, there’s very little violence at all. Most of it takes place “offstage,” and this doesn’t weaken the impact of the crimes or the suspense of the pursuit of justice. Her prose is tight, not a word wasted. Any detail of the setting that’s needed is given at exactly the right moment, and nothing extra. Humor and relationships are woven naturally into scenes that move the plot forward. This is one of those books that I want to reread now that I know how the crime is solved, to study the craft of writing.
I was so happy to see that this author had a new book coming out. It's been five long years and this woman can write a mystery/suspense/thriller and I was waiting with bated breath for its release. I was not disappointed. The author has written another incredible story and I didn't want it to end.
A serial killer who hasn't been active for many years suddenly reappears which leads to the forming of a team to track him down. These characters were as captivating as the story. A FBI agent who was part of the case 14 years ago, the best friend of that victim who had her own run in with the killer 14 years ago who is now a police officer, a rookie FBI agent and finally the head of Major Crimes in Denver where the latest murder just happened. Each bringing their own set of skills to the table to track down the killer.
So many twist and turns before the surprising reveal. I think there were like 68 chapters in this book and I could have easily read another 68 – I really didn't want it to end. Can't wait for the next book in the Cold Case series..
I enjoyed the wild ride to find out who the killer was. Who were his/her victims? Were any of them still alive? I think the author did a great job with suspense.
What a pleasure to read a crime novel where the different law enforcement agencies work together instead of ripping each other to shreds. The killer's calling card is unique, and the piecing together of a cold case with a new crime seamless. Excellent characters.
What a fantastic start to what I hope will be a long series. From the very beginning, I was fascinated by both the characters and the set-up. From there, the author's compelling writing grabbed me and wouldn't let me go. Just an absolute delight. LOVED IT! The author shows a remarkable grasp of police procedures. Her world-building on the FBI and police is spot-on. The lingo and techniques, especially during interviews, felt natural. It felt as if I was getting a sneak peek into the REAL behind the scenes of law-enforcement. It was also a true joy to discover little unexpected golden writing nuggets like this--"...he was having trouble not making a suppository out of I and shoving it into TEAM". Such a fun, accurate, page-turning read. HIGHLY recommend. I'm not giving any information about the plot, because I don't want to spoil it. But I will tell you that I didn't figure out the killer, and I usually do. There was a great twist when you found out who it was. Definitely unexpected! I can't wait to see if this impromptu team that was put together from different agencies ends up together in the next book. Did I mention that I loved it????
BLACK PEARL by Donnell Ann Bell is a procedural full of twists. Set in Colorado, the story traverses the state from Denver to Montrose and nicely illustrates that while there may be a bit of tension between agencies, there’s even more camaraderie. The chemistry is palpable between the three law enforcement officers who form the task force in search of a serial killer. For two of the three it is a reunion—they’d met fourteen years earlier when one had been an investigator and the other a survivor of the very killer they now hunt. Briskly paced and worthy of its Colorado Book Award nomination.
Well-crafted, fast-paced suspense that added twist upon twist. Police procedures were clearly researched which lent a gritty, riveting feel. Absolutely recommend!
Donnell Ann Bell’s Black Pearl, Reviewed by Don Beckwith
Join the hunt! Where to begin? I’ll tell you where—the mountain town of Montrose, Colorado, fourteen long years ago, when a young blonde teenage girl is brutally murdered. The killer is not caught, but teases the police and the family of the victim, named Raelynn, by leaving a taunting sign—a single black pearl tucked beneath the girl’s tongue. Jump ahead those fourteen years and find yourself in Denver, where another murder is committed, also of a blonde female teenage, this one named Brandy Lieffield. And guess what is found hidden under Brandy’s tongue? Yes, a single black pearl! So much time has gone by. That first killing is now considered a cold case. But could clues to this newest murder possibly lead to its resolution? Are we talking about a serial killer, repeating his cruel act so many years later? Are we talking about a copy-cat killer? One thing is sure, though—the black pearl is no coincidence! The cases, with their similarities, are so complex and far apart in years and locale that they require a most unusual team of investigators, law enforcement officers capable, together, of bridging those years and ultimately, painstakingly, solving them both. I assure you, you won’t know until the very end! One by one, we meet the carefully assembled team. Senior FBI agent Brian DiPietro has the lead. Joining him, already having begun the local investigation, is Everett Pope, a Lieutenant in Denver’s Major Case Squad. DiPietro reluctantly takes on a junior FBI agent, a former military mental health counselor, Devon Taylor, whose dream it has been to become an FBI profiler. Finally, there is Allison Shannon, a young police officer on the Colorado Springs PD. The seeming irony is that Allison was the best friend of the original victim in Montrose, whose family blames Allison for allowing their child to be murdered. Fate and emotional necessity had led her to law enforcement as a career. And, one by one, we come to meet the suspects, each of them seemingly capable of such a foul deed as killing young Raelynn all those years ago—and possibly Brandy, the Denver victim, as well. All the team has to begin its work with are those black pearls. Do I need to say it? I truly enjoyed this book!
Donnell Ann Bell's murder mystery, psychological thriller "Black Pearl" engages me from the beginning to the end. The prologue shows an image of a man returning to the scene of a crime, where it is revealed he is gleeful in seeing this woman named Veronica dead, in a body bag. It hints somehow she brought this upon herself--that she made this dark-like figure of a man snap. "His success made him tremble with glee, and he relaxed his fist. The Tahitian pearls he'd ripped from her throat lay cool when he opened his palm. Her last moments alive had been drenched in outrage. While his had been steeped in righteous satisfaction to take something she valued over her own flesh and blood." This is his first taste of taking someone's life.
Then a gruesome murder of a young woman happens. A supervising FBI special agent, Brian DiPietro, and his team are not able to solve it. Mistakes were made. Families, friends, and a community are torn apart as a result. The case has gone cold for a good 14 years until the latest strike with the same MO brings Brian DiPietro back. This time with an assembled team of Allison Shannon, a woman who happened to be a friend of the victim and now cop, Lieutenant Everett T. Pope, and a newbie FBI, Devon Taylor. The author keeps the reader guessing until the end and beautifully ties up everything with a satisfying ending.
Donnell has become an excellent writer. Despite having my share of published books, as I read this book ~ I kept thinking to myself 'I sure wish I could write like this.' I also enjoyed the humor Donnell interjected ~ altho I suspect quite a few people passed right over some and didn't catch it...! Very subtle placement.
The next book I read after Black Pearl was a supposed mega-book by James Patterson ~ Invisible. Frankly, the story Donnell crafted is better .... This is definitely a book you want to read...!!
One thing Donnell does better than most writers is the research. She is tenacious. Things which need to be letter-perfect are!
My sole critique was ~ I got lost in all the characters. Particularly in the end. It was like 'who'se who in the zoo,' at the end. Had I been able to read the book straight thru in one setting, wouldn'ta been a problem. Maybe just me getting old but I got lost...~~!!

This is the first time I have read a book by Donnell Ann Bell and it won’t be the last. I was hooked right from the start and was led through all the plot twists and turns quite willingly. This is a psychological thriller coupled with police procedural. The story is told from the different perspectives of the major characters with no rehashing of scenarios, just the story moving forward from a different viewpoint. Because the main task force characters are likeable and mesh well together, the use of different perspectives creates a fluid narrative, rather than the often cumbersome one that can result from this style of narration. This is a worthwhile read.
Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book.
I listened to this book and I think the narrator was not too great. I always wonder if authors listen to their audiobooks before releasing them to make sure that pronunciations are correct. Based on most of these reviews, I think I would’ve liked it better if I read it. I would’ve given it 3 stars but the narration was so bad that I had to give it two stars.
A body found in an abandoned building opens a case for Lt. Everett T. Pope with assistance from FBI Special Agent Brian DiPietro. A black pearl is found on the body, which reopens the unsolved case of a missing teen from years ago involving a black pearl. Brian worked the case when the teen was first found and the detectives begin by locating the friend of the teen. They are surprised when they discover that she is now a police officer, Officer Allison Shannon. Due to her familiarity with the town and the teen’s family, she joins the task force along with new agent Devon Taylor. This was a little confusing for me as story starts with an unexplained fire and characters then moves on to the body in the abandoned building. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
A black pearl inserted beneath the tongue of a victim points to a cold case from fourteen years ago. Has a serial killer reemerged? An experienced federal agent and an eager rookie agent make a good team. Add Allison, a state cop trying to move up the ranks who personally knew the cold case victim, and the investigation ratchets up. When signs suggest that the killer is stalking Allison, I was unable to stop turning pages. I'm looking forward to another book in the series.
Donnell Bell wrecked my plans for the day. I was going to to do chores, but I couldn't put down her novel Black Pearl. It's obvious the author did a lot of research. A special team is formed to investigate whether a Denver murder is related to a small town cold case. The killer leaves a creepy calling card of a black pearl on the victim's body. I hope this team comes together for another case.
I couldn't sleep until I got to the end of the book. Donnell Ann Bell does not disappoint with the telling of this story. The intricate twists and turns, from beginning to end, kept me hooked on the story and left me wanting more. If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would. I highly recommend this book.
This book was quite different from previous books in that it was darker. Definitely a page-turner and keep you in the edge of your seat! Couldn’t put it down.
What a story! I literally couldn’t stop reading this book evening after evening. It checked all my reader boxes. Plot twists galore and spot-on pacing? Check. Varied settings, from big city Denver to small town Montrose? Check. The best ensemble of characters (Brian DiPietro and Allison Shannon were particular favorites of mine, but Devon Taylor cracked me up something fierce)? Check. An ending that blew my mind? Check. A writing style that had me laughing one moment, then giving me goosebumps the next? Check. Extra gold star to the author for teaching me more about police/FBI procedures.
Oh, man, I can’t wait for the next book in the series. Highly recommended!
Fourteen years ago a teenage girl was murdered in a small town in Colorado. Her killer was never caught. Now, it appears he has struck again in Denver. One of the original FBI investigators is consulted by the local police. As a result, a task force is formed to track down and catch the killer. Among the task force is the best friend of the murdered teenager, now a police officer in Colorado Springs. Will they be able to determine the killer’s identity before he strikes again?
The credits at the end of the book state that this is the author’s first suspense novel, but I would have never guessed that after reading the book. It is extremely well written; the attention to detail superb. I almost felt as I were part of the task force. I was kept guessing as should be with a suspense. My only disappointment with the book was the large amount of foul language it contained. I get it that foul language is all too common in law enforcement novels, but I prefer not to read it. I almost quit the book just a few chapters in because of the language, but it had such potential that I just tried my best to skim over and ignore the parts that were offensive to me. The violence is also strong, but not graphic. There are not any sex scenes in the book. I would recommend this book to the adult reader who enjoys a great suspense/mystery and can handle a lot of foul language, some of it vulgar.
I have enjoyed all of Donnell Ann Bell’s books and this one was certainly not a disappointment. I look forward to the next adventure! I highly recommend!
“Black Pearl” by Donnell Ann Bell-Award Winning Author
“Just when you think you know who did it, believe me, you don’t. “Black Pearl” by Donnell Ann Bell will keep you guessing until the end.”-Green Gables Book Reviews
“Black Pearl” is filled with Police Officers and Investigators you will remember! Pope with his imposing stature, Allison with her first-hand experience from the past, Brian’s unforgettable memories of an unsolved crime, and Devon-new but very valuable to this case.
When they are brought together to solve a murder, they soon know they were brought together for a reason. Are they dealing with a copy cat killer from years ago-or is the original murderer back in action?
Their cold case is back on the front burner when a Denver murder victim’s autopsy reveals something too coincidental to not be the same murderer-a single black pearl-found in the mouth of the latest victim.
How are these cases related and why?
The case takes Allison back to her hometown, the hometown where she has nothing but bad memories. Can she handle this case? Being here. The feelings. The sadness. Could she have stopped the murder? And, now that she is back, can she face the people who blamed her?
Very well written. Chapters that will keep you on the edge of your seat. A book that when you put it down, you will still be thinking about it!
I got this book on a Bookbub deal, and had low expectations. But I couldn’t put it down. Great characters, full of surprises, I’ll definitely look into her other books.
The characters were built well, history's and all. Author Donnell Ann Bell has done an outstanding job of fomenting an intriguing, believable, realistic story. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing. I was totally surprised at the end.
I have thoroughly enjoyed all of Donnell’s books and Black Pearl is no exception! A thrilling read that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the last page! Donnell is truly talented at painting a picture with her words and writing style - it feels like you know the characters personally and are right there for all the action. Thank you for sharing another wonderful book, Donnell!
