Breakbattle Academy #0.5

Orientation Week

Rate this book
Welcome to Breakbattle Academy.

The first school of its kind where survival of the fittest is not a saying, it's your reality.

Ruled by those who are elite in name, beauty, and cunning; Breakbattle takes the war of the classes to a whole new level.

The next four years of my life will be a fight the likes of which I can't yet comprehend, but first I have to survive orientation week.

The Elite Class has plans for me. They will test me until I break, but there is nowhere for me to run.

Secrets and lies lurk beneath the made-up facade, and I don't mean Breakbattle.

I mean me.

There is something that I have to do. There is someone that I'm after. He doesn't know that I'm coming. He doesn't know who I am. But nothing will stop me from seeing my plans through.

Not my family. Not the Elite Class. Not the pesky fact that I'm a girl.

Breakbattle's all-boys campus is getting a new student. Don't call me Zela.

Call me Zeke.

Orientation Week is a reverse harem high school bully romance. This is the prequel and features language, dark themes, and sexual scenes. If you're cool with that, dive in!

Wow this was SO GOOD.

Damn, another bully romance roping me in.
Well call me hooked.

Was it a whirlwind of a bunch of dude names that was kinda hard to keep up with? YES.
And not even your usual Roan’s and Ryker’s, no we got normal names like Justin and Adam.
How exciting...
But damn it was good.

Honestly we are barely told what the fuck is going on. Just given little tidbits of info, luring us in.

But I loved it.
HOW Zela is getting away as being a boy, I don’t know. Because the book describes her as scrawny and board straight with small tits which would work of course for trying to look boyish, BUT THAT’S NOT WHAT THE COVER IS INSINUATING SOOOO..... ???

Hmmm. Maybe make it a little more scaled to size, yeah?
Plus there’s nothing wrong with having small boobs. Easier to bind to look like a boy and you can sleep on your stomach comfortably. Something I gave up three years ago.

So anyway, Zela was somehow, we don’t know, hurt by some mystery man, we don’t know until the very end, and is seeking revenge.
BUT WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED?

And that’s what’s keeping us hooked.
WHAT HE DO BOO?
It better be a hella good (read: tragic) reason for you to pretend to be a dude and participate in this weird ass academy for you to want this much to enact revenge.

Like I said, consider me intrigued.

Let’s see what the plan is, yeah?

I'm glad I read this before starting the series. I think sometimes people ignore the novellas in a series but if I hadn't read this, I would have been pretty confused when I started. This explained Breakbattle and the challenges the kids go through. It establishes Zela's motivations, who the villains are, and who Zela can rely on.

Zela pretending to be a boy at a boarding school reminded me of She's the Man and I laughed. I guess Zela is better at pretending because Amanda Bynes is so clearly a girl lol. For now Zela is young enough but as she gets older, I'm sure it will be harder for her to pass. I'm looking forward to seeing what romances pop up in future books.

All along I was wondering where this 'prequel' was going, what was the point?? We literally find out in the last few pages and I am so prepped and ready for this series. On that end I think the heroine went into this whole debacle completely misguided and under prepared. It's almost disappointing how easy she thought she could fit in with guys (when she doesn't even have any girl friends) at a prestigious school where there will undoubtedly be hazing of some kind. I mean she's supposed to be a dang genius and she is, but she is sorely lacking any type of street smarts or common sense lol. This really just intro'd some characters and let us know the reasoning (AKA the Who) the heroine insists on attending Breakbattle Academy but we still don't know why. This was a great setup and I can't wait to see how things progress. I also have only a few thoughts on who her harem will be but time shall tell.

I have to say that I love that Adam Moon is the child of Valentina Moon & her husband's Ryder, Ezra, Jaxson and Maverick!!!! The Evergreen Academy Series is one of my favorites. Hopefully, Breakbattle will be just as good.

I ended up enjoying this book more than I thought I would. For a little while, I didn't think I was going to like it because the beginning didn't hook me and the pretending to be a guy thing was more stressful than fun in this scenario. I thought our main character was going to get some pretty bad bullying but it was actually okay. She was never discovered as being a girl. I don't know if that's something that will happen in the next book but by the end of Orientation Week I still had a lot of unanswered questions so I'm going to keep reading because I need to find out!

Not a bad book but I feel a little confused on how it ended. Maybe it's just me?

Orientation Week introduced you to Zeke/Zela. She is undercover at this elite prep school and she is on a mission. While trying to get evidence on this school and the people who attend it, she ends up making a couple of friends. It was interesting on how no one found out that she was a girl.. yet. I kept thinking that someone would when it came to certain situations.

It just never happened. I did like the characters that she met throughout the book. I also think this whole class system at this school is a complete joke. That being said I'm intrigued as to why she got F Class.. and I'm wondering if anyone else did too.

In the end, I'm going to dive into the next book just to see what is going to happen next.

Quick intro to the series; a prequel of sorts

This is an introduction to the reverse harem bully series taking place at breakbattle high school. I love when a girl poses as a guy lol such a fun trope. Our main character zeke aka zela, is posing as a boy to gain entrance to the boys breakbattle academy. We don’t know what her true reasoning is yet but I can’t wait to find out! We do know it revolves around a specific boy, although we don’t know why. I have to say I was reading along and towards the end I was thinking damn... I really want her to show some fierceness, and then BAM... that ending. We know she’s up to something, and that “sweet guy” act getting them to trust her is just that... an act. Can’t wait to see her be the strong female lead I’m expecting her to be. Off to the “first” book I go, freshman year.

Nice to see where things started. Picked this one solely because of the gender bender. It was a shame how things turned out because I liked everyone apart from Derek and then Zach. I’m looking forward to reading the next one but not the bullying.

Orientation Week is our introduction to the main characters- Zela/Zeke, Adam, Derek, Landon, Michael, Cole, Zach, Cameron and his crew, and Zee's family- and the interesting plot- integrate Breakbattle Academy as a boy in order to get close to someone from Zela's worst childhood experience. The background stories and little bits of information we get about the Academy and the boys make anticipating the rest of the series easy.

I was confused why she wanted to be a boy to attend a school... but it was an interesting intro. I want to know what happened to her, and what reason she came to go to the school, I think they go hand in hand but...idk. And we find out who she went there to find but I still don’t know why.

Overall it’s interesting so far. The school is a bit weird... too, and I don’t see it happening in reality, but who is to say it doesn’t. Also she’s 15, so I have to keep that in mind in this story.

I seriously loved this book, and can't wait to devour the next few books!

IMPORTANT: I read this one before any of the others, because a lot of important background information is apparently given. This is definitely true, and because of that I recommend that you read this one before any of the others!

The story
The story is about Zela, who infiltrates in a school called Breakbattle Academy. It's a school where only the best survive; she has to go through a number of both physical and mental tests to be the best of the best. The only thing is that girls and boys are separated, she infiltrates as a guy to (allegedly) show that girls can be as good. The Elites, a group of the best the school has to offer well at least in terms of smartness, not niceness, that's for sure sees her (or well, his) potential and so the chaos begins.

I seriously enjoyed this story a lot. There's a lot of setting up the story in this one; a lot of background information. It is quite much, but it didn't bother me. I just can't wait for the actual lessons to begin, especially with that ending! I had some thoughts on how the last book would end; her dad not actually being dead or something like that, but I had no clue what to think of this! Seriously can't wait.

The story reminded me a bit of A Deadly Education, because that too is set in a school with insanely weird rules/situations. Since that is one of my favorite books, I love this one too. I think it's a really original idea, and can't wait to see what happens.

The characters
I love the fact that Zela/Zeke is a really strong female character, who stands for what she believes in and doesn't just want to follow whomever has the loudest voice. I admire that about her. It is very unclear why she wanted to go into the school as a guy, but I have no doubt that it'll be explained in one of the next books. She reminds me of El, because she too is a strong character who fights for what is right. The fact that Zela is great at math is another lovely thing about her, because it shows how math isn't just a guy thing, like some people seem to believe.

I'm not going to lie, I kind of hoped Cam and Santiago would be part of the harem, but I don't really see that happening right now. Too bad argh.. I loved their potential ;)
I'm not feeling a lot of things about the potential harem group , but I just don't really know them yet. I was mainly focused on Cam, so I didn't really feel anything for them yet. It'll probably come though.

Adam is definitely my favorite, he's such a good guy, I love it. I do hope he ends up with Melody, although I don't mind him ending up with Zela too ;) Don't think that'll happen though.

Overall conclusion
I enjoyed this original story a lot which is clear from the fact that I finished it at 3 in the morning . The writing was great, it kept me hooked, and I couldn't put it down. There are some strong characters in it, and a lot of characters with potential, so can't wait to read the next ones!

3-3.5 Stars..

UHHH... WTF was that ending. I was so confused haha I am going to read the next one to really understand what the crap is happening.

The reason I am not rating it higher is that there is no way that this girl is acting like she is 15, she also probably would have given away that she was a girl pretending to be a guy really fast... but no one notices. She also was really good at things that she never tried.... I don't believe that... but who am I to judge....

There are so many secrets and twists that I was getting lost. I hope this next book clears them up otherwise I might have to ditch the series.

Update after starting book 1 "The Plan": I feel like this should indeed be considered book #1 and be read prior to The Plan. That book behaves as if you've read this one--it doesn't take adequate time to explain/summarize things, it proceeds as if you have prior knowledge, so the Amazon ranking of this being #1 is more accurate, in my opinion.

So, I'm somewhat confused because on Amazon this is book #1, but on GoodReads, it says this is just #0.5, prequel novella. It's not clear whether this is meant to be a mandatory installment to the series (wherein it should be counted as book #1) or if it's merely supplementary, meant to add additional depth to a scene introduced in the main books' plot or tell a side story that isn't crucial to understanding the main plot (wherein it being #0.5 or #1.5 or #0.25 or whatever is fine)

I suppose I'll find out when I read the next book, but my guess is that this is probably a necessary read, since it's 140 pages that establish quite a lot of about our heroine and her relationships with some characters I'm presuming are going to be important (like Adam, her roommate and first friend at the academy), as well as elaborate about the school setting and what we're getting into with the story.

Overall, I found myself engaged with this--enough to make me want to continue to the next installment. It has some classic gender-bender manga and live action drama vibes. I immediately thought of Hana-Kimi: For You in Full Blossom, Vol. 1, since this story and it share a lot of details.

In fact, I'd bet the author has read that series and took cues, since we have a cross-dressing heroine who enters a boys' school (or, I suppose, a co-ed school that strictly divides its student body based on sex) for a reason she's very determined about, we have a boy who she must get close to (though I imagine Zela's reasons are different from Mizuki's), we have a focus on competition between the students, and there's a heavy emphasis on sports.

I also can't help but wonder if the author is a Boys Over Flowers: Hana Yori Dango, Vol. 1 fan, since I noticed that Landon has Rui's apple loving quirk and the general vibe of a wealthy school that, from what I can tell, will have harassment/bullying that morphs into romance feels a bit like old school HanaDan.

Oh, and also Mean Girls. Mean Girls was a clear influence. She's basically Cady; home schooled, moved around a lot, has a sort of odd name, didn't have many friends or experience with boys, and is exceptional at math, being capable of taking advance courses, because "it's the same in every country."

We're not offered an explanation for why Zela is that Breakbattle Academy, only some hints that it probably involves Dereck and probably involves some level of trauma, since Zela has an episode of hearing voices and panicking. I'm tantalized, but I hope the build up it worth the pay off and the author isn't just being vague and not properly explaining the story for no good reason.

So far, the only thing I disliked what Zela's mom; she's like a caricature of what some people think feminists/liberals, you know, people with non-traditional views, are like.

I think the idea was to make her somewhat detached from reality so that she would be crazy enough to support and allow her daughter to go enroll as a boy at a boarding school, but the same thing could have been achieved without making the mom like this.

It actually kind of seems like the mom character is portrayed as this aggressive pro-female individual because Zela's father left her, and I'm like, when are we gonna leave this idea that feminism is just women who are angry and hateful towards men because they were rejected by them? It's one of the oldest ways people attack the concept of gender equality.

But, that aside, I found the story to be pretty interesting and I liked the heroine. Zela is, thankfully, not just non-stop lusting after all the boys (her reactions to them are mild and seem normal) which is a big relief because heroines who show up in academy books who constantly mention at length how sexy and hot every boy is and how soaking wet their panties are 24/7 at the mere sight of them make me want to shoot myself.

While the elements of the academy aren't super original (I saw competitive stakes in Shunned; I saw secret elite clubs in both Shunned and Filthy Rich Boys; I saw cross dressing in The Secret Girl), I overall don't currently feel like this story is purely a rehashing of another bully RH academy story, but, we'll see.

Onward to the next book!

Also, while this book only has like, swearing and a little violence between the boys, I don't think this series is YA, or if it is, it's meant for older teens, since the next book has a warning for sexual content. I'll report more on that in my next review.

So I was in the mood for a reverse harem romance, and I saw this one. Was it what I wanted? No. No romance can be found in here, but all the bullying and mystery one could desire.

I don’t even know the last time I seriously read a book entirely in a 9th grade POV. It definitely did not seem like it was the age group indicated at all though.

Overall, I’m intrigued. What will happen to Zeke? Who in fact is the guys that will surround her, cause I’d love to know! Honestly, I will continue this read. This kept my interest. Nothing to really say other than I was intrigued and will continue to read. It wasn’t spectacular, nor was it terrible. It’s got a “I’ll read it” attitude from me.

4.0 star rating.

3 stars. buddy read

This is a prequel to the Breakbattle Academy so it's a short read. The protagonist is very vague throughout the story, but I feel like this is a precursor into the (hopefully) heavy topics in the next book. We get introduced to all the characters and the academy which I felt was a necessary read before jumping into the series head-on.

I'm wholly sucked into the plot of this series and I must have more, but I'm afraid this is going to be a SLOW burn. We are going to have to wait forever to get to the romance... It's okay though, because I love the characters and the mystery. I can't wait to continue on.

This has an interesting premise. This is just an introductory novella so there is not much fleshing out that happens. You can tell it is going to be over the top which is a fairly common trend with the latest bully books. The MC's will have to compete all the time on top of their studies, you would think this to limit their personal time to mess with each other. I'm not totally convinced a girl pretending to be a boy would really work out but I think I'll read the next book to see where it goes.

I really enjoyed this prequel to the series by Ruby Vincent. This prequel started off really great and I can’t wait to see what happens with Book 2. This is a book that has great character development and Bully feels all around.

Nice job Ruby. I can’t wait to read the next book.

I don't know how I didn't realize this before starting this book, but this is a spin off (kind of) of the Evergreen Academy series. Since I happened to have loved that series, this makes me very happy and eager to read the whole series. This book is apparently a prequel of sorts to the series, but it's available with Prime Reading and I wanted to give it a try.

There is definitely a mysterious aspect to the story. There's something going on that even at the end of the book I'm wondering about. This is also another prep school where there seems to be some dark and devious things going on. I'm loving the way the main character seems to want to tear down the system before we even know what it is. It seems as if this series will have some very real feminine strength themes, as well as some equality themes.

I'm wondering if this will end up being reverse harem as the Evergreen books were, or if it will merely be dark romance. Either way, I was entertained and left wanting, so I will be getting my hands on the other books as soon as possible.

Crazy ride

I think I discovered this author last year and there was something in her books that resonated within me. Going into Orientation Week, it was so nice to see Adam back and to get glimpses of where Val and her man are after the previous series.

It's clear that we are heading into a whole new world of corrupted power hungry people with Breakbattle Academy.

I adore how the series is set up so much! There's the divide between boys and girls and the competition and battles for basically any advantage during your time at Breakbattle Academy. Being part of the Elite group is the main goal. But there's also a hidden part that only the insiders get to see.

I can't wait to see what will happen next!

DAAANG!

That was sooo freaking good! Ahh! I’m hooked! This was unlike anything I have read, like going undercover at a boot camp. It was thrilling and exciting! I love Zela, she’s got brains and bolls, lol. Adam is my favorite, I feel like he’s the best friend anyone could ask for. The school is crazy and the secret society is crazier. I can’t wait to see what the next book will have.

I wanted to skip this book, but I guess it helped to understand how things in the academy work.

The concept is interesting. There were too many details and too many characters in this book. The main characters are too young for my taste.

May be I should have skipped it after all, because now I am reluctant to read the next book. I just don't like where the story is going, and I am pretty sure I already know what the big secret is. I am also dreading the teenage drama.

ooooh Now I want to know, what her deal is with that guy!
author knows how to catch someone by surprise!

tbh, so far, I dont really care that much about the new MC and the characters around her - Except for Adam!
I didnt expected this to be a sequel-kinda-spin off of Evergreen, but its great to see the little guy grown up and getting glimps of his parents life.
