Only one man can stop the most dangerous conspiracy ever designed in a shattering thriller about the end of secrets from the author of The Speed of Sound.
After going on the run - for what he knows and has created - autistic Eddie Parks is back in Harmony House, the think tank that has been his sanctuary for sixteen years. With his miraculous invention, an “echo box” that excavates sounds from the past, Eddie achieved the only thing he wanted: to hear his late mother sing. But where Eddie sees good, others see infamy. Because no conversation ever held will be a secret again.
For Bob Stenson, leader of the American Heritage Foundation, whoever controls the echo box controls the future. To seize the game-changing device, he has to get Eddie where he’s most vulnerable: by kidnapping Dr. Skylar Drummond, the only person in the world Eddie trusts.
But Stenson has underestimated his prey. Eddie has the power of echoes on his side. Now he must follow them - into the most dangerous places he’s ever ventured - to save Skylar and the country.

This is a thriller with an Autistic character, and this is the second book in the Speed of Sound series. I cannot say how much I loved this book. I could not put it down, and I had to finish it. I have two kids with Autism, and the character with Autism was well done. I love all the craziness going on in the book, and it was really well written. I won a Kindle Edition of this book from a goodreads giveaway, but this is mine 100% feelings and opinion. If you love thrillers you should give this book a chance. (*)
This is the second book in the Speed of Sound thriller series by Eric Bernt. I read the first book in this series, and was looking forward to the next adventure with Eddie and his "echo box". Since this book picks up where the first book ended, it is best to read The Speed of Sound before reading The Sound of Echoes.
Eddie is a high-functioning autistic savant. He lives in a place called Harmony House, a think tank for autistic savants. In The Speed of Sound, Eddie was working on an "echo box". He had dreams of using the box to hear his deceased mother sing. Of course, there were others wanting to use the box for more nefarious plans.
Eddie doesn't trust many people, or anyone really, but he has formed a trusting relationship with Dr. Skylar Drummond. This book opens with Eddie back at Harmony House and Skylar in danger. The people interested in the echo box decide to go after the one person Eddie cares about. Eddie and Skylar are thrown again into a fast and thrilling mystery.
An exciting and action-packed technothriller. Not exactly realistic, but a fun and fast-paced read. Enjoyable characters, a bit of humor, and plenty of action.
I received a free eARC of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
The Sound of Echoes is the second thriller in the Speed of Sound series featuring one of the most incredible protagonists in the genre, high-functioning 28-year-old autist Eddie Parks, whose genius has led him to create what is affectionately referred to as "an echo box" — a one-of-a-kind device that can recreate never-recorded sounds. However, once a cornucopia of people know of its existence they vow to do whatever is required to get their hands on what they see as an integral piece to wrestle control of the future. Even if that means putting more than one life in danger.
What this book lacks in believability and probability it makes up for in action, palpable tension and characterisation. I would recommend reading the first book, The Speed of Sound, before this one as nothing will make sense otherwise and we jump right back into the melee with no time for a recap. Eddie is one of my favourite characters ever and his struggles with his condition are both humbling and inspiring and Autism is treated with great sensitivity and compassion by the author.
It's a complex, multilayered tale and moves at a real gallop. It's also packed with a cast of mainly unscrupulous, unrelenting and brutal criminals who come up against the FBI, private security firms and government officials in a race against time to stop the precious machine falling into the wrong hands. Many thanks to Thomas & Mercer for an ARC.
The second book in the series left me quite disappointed after a very original idea in the first book.
Basically the parts that made the first book entertaining was all missing from this book. Both Mystery and Sci-Fi got removed from the equation, and Romance got added. So you are left with an "Ok" Thriller.
In short, this is a continuation on the story that was left wide open in the first book. Nothing new happens. The same chase, for the same device. Story is mostly predictable, no surprises.
Where Eddy was one of the best parts for me in book 1, Bernt basically took away from his character in this book by going into the soft and fluffy characteristics that made him unique.
I was knocked out by Eric Bernt's first book in his Speed of Sound series and delighted to have found such an inventive and talented writer. His last novel of the series is The Sound of Echoes and is just as excellent as the first one. Bernt combines a depth of technological, financial, political and historical research (never pedantic, never boring) with a unique selection of finely drawn characters that fascinate and pull you in to root for their triumph or downfall.
Eddie Parks is a young adult, an autistic savant genius. For most of his life he's lived at Harmony House, a home for "special people with special needs." Backed by anonymous and mysterious benefactors, Harmony House doubles as a think tank, where its savants put their unique talents to use solving real world problems. Eddie's mother died giving birth to him, and Eddie's singular desire is to hear her voice. To that end, Eddie creates an amazing device, his "Echo Box," that can reconstruct and replay any previous sound, including private conversations, as perfectly as when it occurred, no matter how long before.
*Note: The following two paragraphs contain spoilers for Book One. Please read the first novel before the second one, as The Sound of Echoes continues where Book One leaves off.*
Eddie fulfills his dream in the first book and hears his mother sing. But the ramifications of this ground-breaking device, from intelligence and blackmail to endless power, are clear to the shadowy consortium, the American Heritage Foundation, that funds and controls Harmony House - a group that has been the catalyst behind world events and politics for many years. It's also clear to radical extremists and others who have heard the rumors of the Echo Box's existence.
Eddie's deeply supportive psychiatrist, Dr. Skylar Drummond, has formed a close relationship with Eddie, helping him with many breakthroughs. As the threats to his invention and life become clear, Skylar helps Eddie escape and survive. Doing that, with Eddie's social and behavioral difficulties and terrors, is a thrilling adventure in the face of dire circumstances.
*End of Book One spoilers.*
In The Sound of Echoes, the 2nd book, Eddie and Skylar are safely back at Harmony House. But Bob Stenson, the leader of AHF, knows that the Echo Box can capture and replay the sound of any action, any conversation, any event. As the sole holder of all the nasty secrets of those in power, AHF could install or destroy and control leaders and politicians and everyone else who can shape world events and finances to benefit AHF and its goals. Stenson believes that whoever controls the Echo Box controls the world and initiates plans once again to get the technology, copy it, and use it.
To control Eddie, Stenson has Dr. Drummond kidnapped. But Eddie has learned many things from Skylar and, with the help of some pretty strong and interesting companions, he fights back. Eddie's journey with Skylar takes them into great danger, but, along with peril and, for Eddie, terror, come discoveries and new relationships that will change their lives forever.
The Sound of Echoes blends science, intrigue, constant danger from career assassins and other assorted threats with medical and psychological support, intellectual brilliance, social awkwardness, love and courage, creating an edge-of-your-seat thriller that will illuminate and warm your heart.
We’ve all heard the phrase ‘if these walls could talk’ when referring to a room that resulted in something that may have been historically momentous or possibly scandalous. Well Eric Bernt takes this phrase on a whole new level with his Speed of Sound series by making the walls actually talk. The series begins with a young autistic man that goes by the name Eddie Parks, who is also a savant, creating a device known as the ‘echo box’. The echo box has the capability of picking up physical signals from the surrounding environment and somehow converting them back to sound waves that are remnants of conversations that had occurred in the past. Eddie’s mother died while giving birth to him and Eddie had been told that she was a beautiful singer. So Eddie’s purpose in life is to hear his mother sing, which gives him the idea of creating the echo box.
What Eddie doesn’t know is that there are others that would like to get their hands on the echo box, and they would be willing do anything to get it, including murder. Two forces are at work in acquiring the echo box, one is Dr. Marcus Fenton, the head of a government-run facility that cares for Eddie. Fenton knows that the echo box would be highly desirable to any government and they would be happy to pay a hefty price to get it. The other entity that is interested in the echo box is the American Heritage Foundation. The AHF was created in the early 1970s by a group of intelligence officers that felt that the American government was becoming unstable and a covert operation that is independent of the government would be necessary to keep it under control. Thus the American Heritage Foundation was born, and they see Eddie’s echo box as a piece of technology that they must have in order to fulfill their mission. Luckily for Eddie, he has a savior by the name of Dr. Skylar Drummond, who is a psychiatrist that specializes in autism.
Drummond is hired to help bring Eddie out of a slump that is preventing him from executing the final phase in the echo box’s creation. Drummond unfortunately finds that the recent death of her boyfriend was actually a murder and is related to Eddie’s echo box. Drummond realizes that Eddie’s life is at stake and knows that she has no choice but to take Eddie and make a run for it and with every agency with an acronym chasing them, it won’t be easy. Fortunately for them, they find a little help along the way.
This is a fun action packed series with some delightful characters. Unless you expect the ‘techno’ in technothriller to be somewhat realistic, the echo box makes for an interesting plot device. When Eric Bernt is not writing novels, he is busy at work as a Hollywood screenwriter and it is not surprising that the Speed of Sound series has that movie-like feel to it. The second book in the series, The Sound of Echoes, comes out in June of 2019 and is a continuation of The Speed of Sound novel, so it would be best if The Speed of Sound is read before The Sound of Echoes. If you have read and enjoyed The Speed of Sound, then you will most likely enjoy The Sound of Echoes.
The story is about autistic Eddie Parks on the run for what he knows and has created. In his sanctuary of 16 years - Harmony House. His invention the echo box is dangerous to others as it has the ability to bring about the sounds from the past. The leader of the American Heritage Foundation wants the box for himself, so the struggle begins.
This is the second book in the Speed of Sound Thrillers series. I enjoyed reading this book it had intrigue and suspense. I Recommend this book.
Loved this sequel as much as the first in this two book series. Fascinating premise about an autistic young man and his obsession with building a box that can play sounds from the past so he can hear his dead mother sing. This picks up pretty much right where the last one left off. I think a lot would be lost if you didn’t read the first one. Also loved that it was only two books long what with everything having to be a trilogy these days!
Well written story that will provide readers an exciting and thrilling ride as the characters face and attempt to overcome a variety of obstacles and threats to their very lives. Highly enjoyable and recommended book. 5 stars.
My thanks to goodreads and the book's giveaway sponsors for the opportunity to obtain and read a copy of this book.
WOW!😁 This one is for the record book. Just great!
The two books of the Speed of Sound make up one of the best thrillers I have ever read. The characters, both good and bad, make up the best as they complement each other.
Please read the first book or you will miss out on the entire world of our world.
Eric Bernt is a surpurb storyteller that combines inexhaustible research with the yarn-spinner's art, drawing a stunning plot with suspense that never wanes.. You'll never want it to end. !! Highly Recommend !!
All the action of the first book and the characters remained exceedingly likable. And Lolo will bless the pages of the next book I'm sure. Two thumbs up and a highly recommended page-turner.
“The Sound of Echos” is a worthy successor to Mr. Bernt’s earlier novel, “The Speed of Sound”, which I gave one of my very rare 5-star ratings. I could almost just copy my review of the first book to describe everything I liked about the sequel. Mr. Bernt has found a wonderful way to blend a very realistic (and uncommon) human element into a fast-paced (but not “break-neck”) techno-thriller. I enjoyed the further development of relatively minor characters from the first novel, as well as the peeks into the main characters’ respective pasts, which helped nicely to fill out their personalities and motivations while at the same time advancing the story. And the little twists and turns were often surprising and nearly always satisfying as a reader who became invested in the characters. And, as with the first novel, I appreciated his treatment of both Eddie and Lolo, which I found realistic and informed, and at no point pandering (which I find, sadly, unusual). I read this book while on vacation and have been recommending it (and the original) to virtually everyone I see. I am hopeful there will be another installment in this series.
I am a devoted TV watcher. I stream during the day, binge watching all my favorites over and over. This book caught my attention and I couldn't put it down. I stayed awake all night and read it in one sitting, finishing it mid afternoon. I got the first book a year ago as a prime first of the month, but didn't read it until the second book came out. When the second one came out, I remembered that I had the first one andxreadbit in just a few sittings, then the second one I just gobbled up. What I really liked about this series was that the good guys won! There were few bad words and no gratuitous violence. Just good writing. Lived the characters.
This has turned out to be a great two book series. Eddie Parks is an autistic patient living in the Harmony House his entire life. He's also a genius, who creates an "Echo box," which is a device that can capture any and all conversations in history in any particular room. He wants to hear his now dead mother's singing voice, but various government and intelligence agencies obviously see other nefarious uses. Lots of thrills, action, comedy and the interaction between Eddie and Lolo is the best part of the book. This author is one I'll be watching in the future.
This sequel is action-packed, almost from the first page. It is a very enjoyable read, with lots of interesting twists. Of course you have to have a bit of an imagination, but that shouldn't be a problem for most given the popularity of flying dragons and the like. I thought the writing was even better than the first book. Another in the works?? Hoping so in SC!
The second book still maintains the reputation that was set in the first book. The protagonists are developed even further and as I delved into the book, different angles of certain characters were presented. The new perspectives and the increasingly colorful characters keep the second book fresh and thrilling.
I really enjoyed the first book. I was really excited when I saw this book become available. And I am happy to say the story moved from one book to the other seamlessly. I enjoy the storyline, as well as the characters. Patience is divine 😂. Anyway, I give this five stars and would highly recommend this book. Great story!
The Speed of Sound and The Sound of Echoes are both awesome. I could hardly put either of them down. Eric Bernt is an awesome storyteller. I'm also a huge fan of Eddie. Being the mom of an aspy son, Eddie is my hero!
This book grabs attention of the reader fast and holds it. It blends in well with the first book. Their are a lot of location changes but they are clearly defined. There's small amount of cursing and no sex scenes. I'm waiting on Eric's next book.
This book grabs you from the beginning and makes you hold on for dear life. It flows from chapter to chapter seamlessly and with the kinetic energy of a thousand pound bomb. Hold on & enjoy the ride.
I loved the two books in this series. The character development was great as the transitions were smooth. I actually purchased the audible version of both books and the narrator was excellent. I would recommend this series...Please oh Please let there be more or at least a spin off. No spoilers ,but I there's a budding relationship that I enjoyed.
Please write the screenplay. Book 2 could be a standalone but was the perfect 2nd book. Well developed characters which should give Mr Bernt the basis for continuation or completely new books. Lol forward to the next book.
What happens to Eddie and his Echo Box? Will Dr. Skylar Drummond continue supporting him at the Harmony House? And what’s really behind the shadowy government agency ready to stop at nothing to control Eddie and his “acoustic archaeology” invention?
We finally have the answers in this exciting conclusion to The Speed of Sound. Eric Bernt’s first book was fast-paced and a thrilling ride that left us hanging at the end like a good TV drama. It’s not surprising that Bernt’s first career was as a screenwriter.
PLEASE NOTE: Readers really must read the first book in this series before picking this one up.
Bernt jumps right into the action without wasting time setting the backstory. Just a few pages in, Eddie and Dr. Skylar are again fighting to preserve the technology behind the Echo Box, a machine that can read, record and play sound waves from any room and any period in time, thanks to acoustics “stored” through electrical energy. Imagine being able to hear conversations spoken in supposedly secure spaces and it’s no surprise a quasi-government agency was behind the project.
From shootouts to a motorcycle gang, a surprise ally who steps up to save Harmony House and Eddie learning that his heart really can sing, I really enjoyed this story. I sped right through it and was satisfied by the ending. I hope Bernt doesn’t stop with this two-book arc, but continues sharing his talents with his readers.
I really enjoyed this book it was a marked difference from the first one and for the better . I really connected with the main character and the other characters in the book would have been perfect for a movie. It was a wholesome adventure, loved it
This is book two in the Speed of Sound series, having been pleasantly surprised by the debut novel I was excited to read the second one.
Boy I was not disappointed, I read this in one sitting. Initially around the first or second chapter I was not sure that it would be as exciting as the first, well it surpassed it. I enjoyed the new characters immensely, particularly Caitlyn and to my amusement, even Stenson's teams. Eddie Parks and Skylar Drummond are on the run again with the echo box. Bob Stenson from the American Heritage Fund is determined to have the device and will spare no expense or manpower to get it. Stenson puts together the most mercenary teams he has access to and furthermore adds the world's most lethal assassin to the mix.
Luckily for Eddie and Skylar they have assistance from very unexpected sources. Sources with unique expertise, skills and technology.
I find it hard to believe that this is the author's first series, what a thrilling ride with incredible characters, humour and all the action you could want.
Thanks #Netgalley and #Thomas&Mercer for the ARC of #TheSoundofEchoes in exchange for my honest review.
I think I enjoyed this, the sequel even more than the first book. It took on a James Bond-esque feel with evil villains, lots of technology and a high body count so in many ways it was quite a different book. The autistic characters, Eddie and Lolo are dealt with in a humorous and respectful way, being ‘differently able’. These first two books are very accomplished and I shall look forward to Eric Bernt’s next books with eager anticipation. Highly recommended, since it got going, it was a real page turner.
