"In the Panopticon Experiment, Caldecott has created a world unlike any I've ever read about or seen in movies." Available now on Amazon as a paperback or Kindle.
Praise for The Panopticon
Fast paced adventure/environmental dysptopian YA novel “I really enjoyed this dystopian/YA adventure story; the premise was fascinating, the writing fluid. The pace was excellent, it keeps you hooked as the story unfolds right to the end. The inter-species communication felt natural (I LOVED the snow leopard), dialogue too. The environmental stance is very appropriate for where we are now in the world.” Amazon 5* Review
Well-paced , enjoyable and thought provoking “The Panopticon Experiment is an adventure story set in the future. Given the current gloomy outlook for the planet, I found it refreshing to discover a place that is more harmonious than the present. Yes, rising sea levels have turned countries like Britain into an archipelago, but a genetic mutation has led to a more peaceful world . . . ‘The Panopticon Experiment’ is well-paced, enjoyable and thought provoking. It left me wondering, for example, if an ability to communicate with animals would really cause us to treat them any better. The way humans have treated one another since the dawn of history is not a promising sign, but it was heartening to imagine through the pages of this book that communication might lead to a better world. ” Amazon 5* Review
A masterful debut . “I thoroughly enjoyed this highly imaginative and well written novel. Though set in a post-apocalyptic world, the story line has resonance for the times we live in. In keeping with the lead being shown in environmental politics, the two main protagonists are young people who share telepathic connection with animals, and are struggling against regressive political forces seeking to reassert the predominance of humans in a world where species equality has become the norm.” Amazon 5* Review Colin Duncan-Taylor, Author of ‘Lauragais’
Great read ! “I was hooked from the start! wonderful young adult novel, especially for those with a heart for animals or the environment.” Amazon 5* Review
A book of our time “Fantastic ! Takes you away and at the same time it asks so many questions relevant to what the planet and humanity are going through right now . . . so much to reflect on! Can't wait for the next one...BTW the cover is stunning!” Amazon 5* Review
The story, The Panopticon Experiment is about inter-species telepathy between Human and Animal. The Humans divided into 2 categories, Com and Non Com's. Having ability to telepath and those who could communicate with animals through mind are the Coms and the Non Coms were those who lacked this ability. A terrorist attack that would have killed Flo's friend, Lonce; a last snow leopard. Flo is convinced that the attack is related to the HSL. Flo is an orphan, in an accident she lost both her parents when she was only seven, and since then she was living with Seb and his parents and with legal guardian George.
Out of blue, Flo starts having nightmares; dreams that were related to other animals being tortured. George and Seb thinks those are just dreams but Flo could sense their pain and she knew it's was something more. So what will Flo do? Will Flo and Seb will be able to stop the HSL? Who are HSL what do they really do?
The Panopticon Experiment is a story that shows friendship and the non breakable bond between humans and animal. The Author Rachel Caldecott has described, the feeling of care and affection between Flo and Lonce, a snow leopard is just beautiful. Anyone that has a pet can related and feel the bond easily just as I did. I liked the detailed description of the laboratory, the camp and the island Rosendale the most and that was done remarkably well. As I read, chapter by chapter the story line became more interesting and mysterious which is great way of writing a book. The tension built and the shock when the mystery was revealed, everything was great and at the end I was satisfied that I read this book. The most interesting part of the book that I liked/ loved was, the ending fight; the rescue if I may say.
Overall I loved the book and if you are looking for something new and unique story. Experience the friendship between Flo and Lonce by reading The Panopticon Experiment now.
Not meant for my age group, but i really do applaud the raising of so many topics that face us today. Well-written, witty and well thought-through, it presents a future where (not surprisingly) there there's been a cataclysm in the past. This unnamed disaster has played about with human genes, and now a significant proportion of the population can speak with the animals. Also unsurprisingly, a group of those who don't have this gene resent this, yearning for the good old days when they could thrash animals and people not like themselves at will. There's a lot in this book that we can relate to - the rise of the resentful Right, for example, and their determination to drag us all back to a bigoted past.
I highly recommend this book. Ms Caldecott's done a great job in presenting moral issues for our time (and the future), written engagingly with characters we can and do warm to. There's tension, there's wit, all in a highly believable setting.
I’ve been wanting to read this book for ages and I’m so glad I did. Technically a YA novel as the main protagonists are teens, it is YA in the same vein as Harry Potter and Hunger Games – a read every age can enjoy. This 50 something certainly did. Actually, there’s more than a bit of magic in this dystopian future novel; no, not dystopian, utopian – a future where humans and animals can communicate and live in harmony with the natural world. Life is peaceful – until it suddenly isn’t. An explosion near to Flo’s home begins an adventure across the archipelago of Britain, to Leeds port and North Yorkshire, for two teens and the world’s last snow leopard. This is genre-busting fiction at its best – imaginative, fast-paced and adrenaline filled. I hope there’s more to come.
I loved this imaginative and thought-provoking book! I enjoyed spending time in a world where everyone is vegan and kind to animals (well except a tiny few, how ironic with things reversed from today). This novel should be read by many more people because it shows the potential for a better world, and how absolutely absurd humans are today.
For future books in the series, the overall pace could be improved. The first half of the book is slower and then the action is very packed in the end. Don't stop reading because the end is worth it!
Loved the plot; loved the pace and loved seeing how the author, Rachel, has reworked an earlier version into this contemporary masterpiece! Highly recommend for readers of any age.
A fast-paced story set in the future that is well written. The plot is well thought out and thought-provoking. The word building is enjoyable, so much so, you could see this future world for ourselves. Highly recommended for animal lovers and vegans.
