Koge-Donbo (or Koge-Donbo*) is the pen name of a Japanese manga artist. Koge-Donbo* started her career soon after college as a doujinshi artist. She got the idea of a unique pen-name, Koge-Donbo* from Akira Toriyama's pet cat. She made her first official US appearance at Otakon 2004 in Baltimore, MD as a Guest of Honor. She's known best as the author of Pita-Ten, Kamichama Karin, and Kamichama Karin Chu series.
Kamichama Karin is by no means a perfect manga, but I've always loved it. True to Koge-Donbo style, at first glance, this is over the top cute which may or may not put people off. Her works are usually a strange mixture between over the top cute, ridiculous humour sprinkled with darker elements that don't surface until later down the line - Kamichama Karin is no exception.
There are elements of magical girl, characters can take on a god form which are loosely based on greek gods. It's very much up in the air as to why they can turn into gods or what their exact goals are, but it's utterly hilarious. I love the characters, their arguments, their silly antics. It's not until quite late in the game that we actually receive some answers. And I'll be honest here, I was so disappointed when I read the ending years ago. So many new elements are sprung at the very last minute, almost turning this into more of a sci-fi work, and it feels like we barely scratch the surface before it concludes.
Despite the lack of proper closure, I've always considered this a favourite manga, which just goes to show how much I enjoyed the characters and humour. Not long after my first read, I found out that there is a sequel - hurrah! Although I picked up those volumes years ago, I never got around to reading them, but I am hopeful that we will find out more about what actually caused the events of Kamichama Karin.
Again with the bickering between Karin and Kazune in this one lol. They always seem to be at each other's throat about something. I'm curious how Kirika and Kirio's relationship will continue given that Kirika seems to be having some doubts.
Volume 4 opens up on a more serious note, with questions around Karin's ring. The group is still at the hotsprings for their trip, however the pleasantries are cut short with more god battles and drama. Volume 4 is a wonderful addition to the series - love issues, other mysteries of identity and power are addressed as well.
Kamichama Karin, has simply improved with age. The once simplistic and empty panels seem to have become more decorated and orientated; characters are more vivid and the reactions just as outrageous and super deformed chibi-style. But most importantly, Volume 4 starts Karin's questioning of her crush on Kirika sempai, and suddenly Kazune is looked upon in a kinder light. Cute little plot tricks thicken the romantic tension, and it looks like only a cuter series from now on.
If you haven't liked the series from Volume 1, just give up now, it's not very different - but Volume 4 is a good new part to it. Lovable and cute, Kamichama Karin continues to prove Koge-Donbo's strength in the younger shoujo romance genre.
This volume seemed slightly rushed. I understand that the main plot doesn't take up as much of the book as before due to side stories and whatnot but I remember how long I would have to wait for the next volume back in the day.
Although I really love the side stories and extras which is why the rating is still high. There's a more serious tone to this volume, as we really start to get into the main plot. The volume still does however remain a bubbly, cute addition.
Karin and Kazune's relationship continues to grow and we learn more about the 'antagonists'. We especially get to see more of Kirika and the big reveal about that character is finally shown.
As always, the art was beautiful and the story is as interesting as ever.
They are still on their hot springs vacation in Tokyo,Japan; Karin and her friends. Along the way Karin's archenemy Kirio is invited by the oblivious Micchi to come along. During the time they are there Kirio has made his attempts to fight Karin but since Kazune (Depite the fact that he's a sexist he's still Karin's friend) is there with her fending off Kirio's attacks is pretty easy. But Kirio is mostly held back by his twin brother who is also Karin's crush Kirika Karasuma who also came along to the hot springs vacation. Somehow Kazune with his sun god powers is being doubted by his inner self.
