Savannah is about to become a former city on the map if Katie can’t figure out how to get rid of the warlocks who just blew into town. Equally disturbing are their deep ties to Jackson’s father, the man who brought them.
Randall Hunter is hell-bent on bringing Jackson into the family business. But Jackson knows what his father does for a living–or thinks he does—and he’s just as determined to refuse. But the warlocks are much more than they seem, and Jackson doesn’t have a choice when they target Katie as leverage. If Katie could just find a way to kill their unusual henchmen, the warlocks would be toast.
Can things get any worse? Of course they can. Mouse is two steps away from succumbing to a two-hundred-year-old family curse, Katie’s stressing out over the plans to expand MagicInk, and there’s about to be a dangerous shortage of tequila in town.
Bayou Kings is the fifth book in the Katie Bishop series.
Luanne Bennett is an author of fantasy and the supernatural. Born in Chicago, she lives in Georgia these days where she writes full time and doesn’t miss a thing about the cubicles and conference rooms of her old life. When she isn’t writing or dreaming up new stories, she’s usually cooking or tending a herd of felines and basset hounds. Look for book three of the Katie Bishop series coming this spring!
This was a fun series to read. The characters had such personalities! I love urban fantasy but sometimes get burnt out on all the sex. These books have the touch of romance to warm your heart but there real stories driven by great characters not sex. I'm really happy to have discovered this author.
The Katie Bishop series is an interesting one. Every installment since the first has kept my attention and the action with the storyline are each different. Katie isn't all untouchable which is nice. She's a badass but have limitations which makes her more likeable. Don't get me wrong, I love strong woman leads in books but every once in awhile you run across one that is just too much. It's good to have a balance in the MCs. Jackson is well...Jackson. He's sweet in a quiet brooding kind of way. Sexy yet mysterious. Overall, I enjoyed the storyline in this installment, from the main characters to the villains.
WOW, AMAZING, FANTASTIC This latest instalment of Katie Bishop is superb – I couldn’t put it down! We are reintroduced to Randall Hunter (Jackson’s father). He hits the town with some real badass warlocks intending to set up some dodgy deals to take over the town. Can Katie, Jackson and the Blackthorn Grove stop him? It will take some pretty hardcore magic, but do they have the skills? We also catch up with Emmeline and Gabriel – is this still a match made in heaven? Then there’s Mouse – there’s a lot more to the story behind the rodent than meets the eye – can’t wait for the next instalment!
Every book I keep thinking is the best one until I get to the next one. I love all of the characters in this series!
Katie Bishop is not the one getting in trouble this time but she does help to fix the problem with Jackson and all the Grove. In this book you finally get more of Mouse's back story too. I love that there are several stories inside each book. I would recommend this series for anyone who loves action, adventure and some snark.
The continuing saga of Katie Bishop! Half human, half dragon! In this novel Katie battles evil mafia warlocks brought down upon her and her Superman boyfriend Jackson by his estranged father! Will Jackson take over the family business that his father demands? Or will Katie, Jackson, and their friends and colleagues perish in the battle? A must read!!
For almost a week now I have barreled through the first 4 of 5 books in the Katie Bishop series and today I finished book five. I’m feeling a little sad because I don’t know when another book will be released and I’m already missing the world Ms. Bennett has so vividly created. However, let me say that “Bayou Kings” was a fascinating story from start to finish.
This time Jackson’s father, Randall Hunter, has come to Savannah to enlist Jackson into the family business. Of course Jackson wants nothing to do with dear old dad until Randall targets the local businesses and Katie. It is clear they Randall and his associates think very little of women. Even though Katie has her dragon no one including the society realized they would be going to war with warlocks.
It quickly became clear that Randall is not really in charge and the warlocks who are have brought with them their own brand of monsters. If Katie and Jackson are to save Savannah, their friends and their lives will get will need to infiltrate this group in order to obtain information. This is just the tip of the iceberg and all hell is about to break loose.
In addition to all of this craziness, Mouse has a major curse hanging over her head and Katie is not about to let one of her suffer. Their will be a reunion with her mother and grandmother with all kind of secrets coming to light.
This read was chocked full of paranormal goodness and I loved every minute of it. My only criticism is that towards the end there are two major battles being launched simultaneously but the author only focuses on one. There is no reason why both couldn’t have been featured by way of separate chapters and would have made this read fully magnificent!
Oh well, what done is done. Now I must await the news of the release of the next book. This is a series that you definitely want to put on your to read list if you love paranormal/ urban fantasy.
I feel like I should have stopped reading the series at book 3 because after that it went off the boil. After book 4 I said no more...the characters, weren't engaging me anymore, there's behaviours in the main characters I find a little dislikeable, and entirely unbelievable and the overarching storyline was going on and on and onnnnnn However, now I'm menopausal I forgot I thought that about book 4 and got book 5 and I so struggled to get through it for same reasons. SPOILER ALERT ..the evil daddy figure gets a mention in a couple of books, is one of lead bad guys in this book..threatens death and destruction to all his son loves and either actively acts on threats or sits back and watches ...in the blink of a page has a soul redemption moment where he sacrifices himself for his son. Emmm..no. Jackson and his evil daddy haven't spoken in years...his,daddy moves to his sons town to take it over. You telling me a successful evil businessman does no checking up beforehand on son, close pals and town? Emm.no. For the purpose of moving story to where it needed to be son, girlfriend and father had meeting for 15 minutes where they both pretended they'd had a,sudden dark personality change and evil daddy did not strongly question it but moved straight to full acceptance..and here, meet skill my partners. Emmm. No I pray to the God I don't believe in that I remember this, when it comes to book 6
Savannah is about to become a former city on the map if Katie can’t figure out how to get rid of the warlocks who just blew into town. Equally disturbing are their deep ties to Jackson’s father, the man who brought them. Randall Hunter is hell-bent on bringing Jackson into the family business. Mouse is two steps away from succumbing to a two-hundred-year-old family curse, Katie’s stressing out over the plans to expand MagicInk, and there’s about to be a dangerous shortage of tequila in town. We get to learn more about Jackson's past and background story, Kate and Jackson could be looking at how permanent they actually are. Look forward to the next one
The ending put me in a better mood and reminded me that Bennett can make really cute couple moments. Otherwise? This read like the rest most times and I’m pretty sure the ending “climax” feels about as even as the build up, if not less. Katie’s always doing something huge but at the same time “not” and in her mind, it’s not exactly an epic poem moment, so by the time she finishes her thing and it’s all done, I don’t even realize it’s over until she’s talking about the recovery time.
I think I have a few pet peeves as well with this series. There’s a lot of “what happened” moments where the characters take pages to get to what they wanna say and it’s not good build ups or suspense, I just get more impatient and wonder why they have to say “that’s not even the worse part” six different ways. Overall I like these people and despite the slight irritations, Savannah just sounds like a cool place.
This was such an amazing book in the series of Katie, Jackson and Friends. The cast of characters in this series are so colorful and unique that they pull you into their world in such a great way that you can’t possibly imagine how much joy it brings to read and appreciate it. The story is exciting and thrilling and full of surprises that blows me away every time I read a new story about them. Several characters are so funny and so well written that you feel like you’re in the middle with them experiencing the same thing as well as if you’re in the book, and you can’t wait to turn the page or put it down. Read 90% in one sitting and the rest the next day. And am going to start reading the next book after this review. Am totally hooked on this series.love this series that much. So this is a Must Read in the series. Have a Great Read
This is book number five. The rest were O.K. but I gave up on this one.
The main character continues to allow the coven to use and abuse her. The coven wants/needs to check out a shipping container. You would think a witch, or a small shapeshifter could do the job, but they want the woman whos only talent in turning into a giant dragon to break in. And she just goes along no questions asked. Does the coven help - of course not.
By the fifth novel you (at least, I) expect the powerful character to grow, take charge of her life and stop letting people walk all over her.
Enjoyed this. This is the fifth book in this series. I like Katie. She is strong and supportive of her friends. In this book, Katie is faced with two dilemmas., one involving Mouse and one with Jackson's father. The story is well paced. Most of the side characters are involved in the storylines. You learn more about Mouse in this one. I read it straight through. I like this series. I would start with book one. I have not read the other series set in this world (yet).
The Katie Bishop series is very good and like the rest this is excellent. It does not get 5 stars for the simple reason that the author makes magic too easy. The characters are likeable, the world is well described, but the magic comes to the rescue easily and just seems to fix everything...just, like, that. Get a coven together and boom, everything is solved. Sorry, but up until that point magic took skill and risk. Other than that, an acceptable addition to the series.
Katie is messing with the mob, but she lacks a lot of intelligence. Dammit, she thought she could sneak in and nothing was going to happen. She was even surprised they wanted to mess with her business. It lacked a lot of maturity. She knows she's not supposed to do some things alone but she goes out there and does it and still takes it out on Jackson.
And like, in the last book, she was kind of addicted to vampire blood, and in this one it wasn't even mentioned. They acted like it was super common.
I wish I had Katie’s energy! She’s intelligent and brave and loving (and a little bit snarky, but not in a mean way.) She always seems to be so busy, and then she has to help Sugar and Mouse with their disasters, and then she and Jackson are threatened. Katie would die for her friends, and it looks like it may come to that. I love the characters in this series. And the new characters in this book were a big surprise. The author has a wonderful imagination, and is perfect in her explanations and descriptions, so I felt part of the story.
This has actually been my favorite of the series so far. Jackson’s mobster father shows up to initiate his son into the family business. When Jackson and Katie go along with it to protect their town, they get a whole lot more than they bargained for.
Katie does some reckless stuff in this book, which demonstrates that she’s still more brawn than brain - thank goodness she has Finn to do all her thinking for her. The plot twist with Mouse’s family was a nice diversion from Katie being in the spotlight the whole time - it was fun to finally figure out what was going on with that character.
I hope Luanne Bennett reads her reviews, because the negative way in which hoodoo is repeatedly depicted is driving me bonkers. It's "dark" even though it rescues Katie or her friends, whereas the coven is depicted as scary but ultimately good. Black is bad; white is good. Really?
I hope it more books include African diaspora magic that she rectifies this!
This book has storylines of Mouse showing her supernatural heritage, and Jackson's father trying to expand his 'business' into Savannah. His partners have some habits Katie won't buckle to, and that gets Jackson a taking to, because the expansion includes setting up Jackson as the boss. This one's hot!!!
I really liked the suspense of this book. Jackson's father comes onto town with the Warlock Mafia. The bad guys have big plans for Savannah, and things get very dangerous very fast. One of Katie's employees has an unrelated (but still very serious!) crisis that Katie tries to help with.
This was a great series with colorful characters, a kick-butt heroine, romance and lots of magic. I really enjoyed it and honestly hope we hear more from Katie Bishop and her crew.
Loved ever of the books. Didn't send review because I. Just couldn't wait to read the ext book. Now I think it was your fault that this happened. I mean you wrote these wonderful books. Thank you so very much.
Had to read all five books. Loved all the characters. Didn’t think I would like a book about a dragon shifter, that it might be a little too cornball. One of my all time favs!
Jackson's Father is in town, wanting him to come into the family business. Warlocks are going to take over Savannah, and Jackson is going to be the ' king '. The warlocks are mafia and traffic drugs, women and money.
Book 5 has an Italian paranormal mob moving in to take over Savannah. They are vicious and ruthless and have their eyes on Katie and Jackson. There is extreme danger, murders, arson, intimidation, mega magic, and huge creatures. Highly entertaining.
