The Way of Legend #1

Reclaiming Honor

Rate this book
The story begins here!Bestselling and award-winning author of STIGERS TIGERS and the KARUS SAGA, Marc Alan Edelheit has teamed up with national bestselling author Quincy J. Allen to deliver a fresh epic fantasy adventure, told from the perspective of dwarves. This action-packed series introduces a new hero, and fighter, Tovak Stonehammer. The dwarven nations are facing extermination. Their ancient enemy has returned. The Horde is coming and, along with it, a dark tide is spreading across the world of Tanis. One by one, the free peoples of the world have fallen under a shadow, crushed by the merciless boot of the Horde. The Syrulian Empire, the last buffer state between three dwarven nations and the advancing armies of the Horde, has fallen. Vastly outnumbered, the dwarves must undertake the Great March, uprooting their entire civilization in search of a new homeland. They hope to find a safe harbor beyond the reach of the enemy, for the nations are not strong enough to withstand the might of the Horde.Every sword is needed.A Pariah amongst his people, an outcast and undesirable, Tovak intends to serve and do his part. He must hide his true identity in hopes of making a name for himself and proving his worth. Punished for the actions of his father, something in which he had no part, he has suffered one setback, one injustice after another. Yet his faith in Thulla—the rejected god of his people—is strong and has kept him going. Tovak has pursued his dream of serving his people and working towards the day when he will be able to cast off the mantle of Pariah and build Legend of his own.Bearing the burden of his people’s disdain and his family’s disgrace, Tovak has joined a warband. Armed with his faith, determination, and courage, he must face heartless comrades, deadly monsters, and the enemy who would like nothing better than to place any dwarf’s head on a stake. Will Tovak rise to the occasion? Or will he falter and fall before the blades of the Horde or, worse, his own comrades when they discover the truth? Tovak must find a way to reclaim his honor and prove his worth. All the while, he might also be the key to his people’s salvation, or perhaps even their downfall … for a true god has taken an interest in him and his future. The path of destiny lies before him and so too does the Way of Legend.Set upon the world of Tannis, some years before the arrival of Karus and the Lost Legio IX, this book is a Last War Novel.

Edelheit and Allen have opened a new chapter in the story of Tanis

Another fascinating and action packed tale of the world of Tannis, threatened by an extreme evil with black magic, dark powers and a military force known as the horde. Orcs, Goblins, Humans, Priests of the dark gods, all in the service of evil. Already they have conquered about two thirds of Tannis.

This story concerns the dwarfs before Karus and the lost Legio IX are removed from Britain and Earth to Tanis. The dwarfs are in a fight for survival against the horde. This being a work by Marc Alan Edelheit, a hero arises. In this first volume he is introduced but has not yet become a leader.

My only sort of strong objection to this novel is what I consider overuse of the term something fierce as in, "that hurt something fierce.". My first negative encounter with this phrase was in an FBI report. In those days Mr. Hoover kept an eye on the statistics of each field office . If cases in a category decreased significantly there would be a memo. In this instance the memo instructed supervisors to make more cases in the category of crimes on federal property/reservations. The problem was that there just weren't many good cases in this category. But naturally the bureaucracy had to have an answer. Agents were sent out to interview every complainant in this category no matter how strange the complaint. One lady complained that uniformed Kessler Air Force Base personnel were sneaking on to her property to cut down her mulberry tree. When she complained, the base sent hordes of miniature flying saucers which flew around her head and shot her with laser beams which made her sweat something fierce. The agent reported that the tree in question was on the neighbor's property and that despite intense observation, he saw no flying saucers. However, he noted that the complainant did seem to sweat something fierce. This report was sent to Washington and so far as I know, there were no more complaints about the lack of crime on federal property in Mississippi. At least for a while.

Legendary

A fantastic collaboration between Marc and Quincy. A strong tale and now we have another string of the back story of the Stigerverse. I particularly like the portrayal of the Dvergr as real people and not the faintly comical Tolkien dwarves, or the hilarious Pratchett dwarves. No Hi Ho from these boys. I also like the parallel between Tovak and Stiger, both suffering from the consequences of their fathers actions. Highly recommended.

I completed twelve available books authored by Mac Alan Edelheit on March 6, 2021 in less than a month. They are Chronicles of a Legionary Officer (5 books), Tales of the Seventh (3 books), The Karus Saga (3 books), and Way of the Legend (1 book). To paraphrase Bill and Ted’s Adventures it has been a “most excellent” reading experience.
I don’t recall what prompted me to first read Edelheit’s Tales of the Seventh: Stiger. It turned out to be a great place to start. In the books that followed, Stiger’s universe expanded introducing many mythical creatures and gods and followers at odds with each other. The books broke the bounds of time and worlds as prophecies began to unfold. Other protagonists for good and evil were introduced and were led and driven by their respective gods toward specific ends leading to wars and skirmishes and unlikely compacts.
I am giving each work a five-star rating. Much like the Star Wars Saga, it is essentially one story involving different players, time periods, and multiple worlds.
Each book left me thirsting for more. Each book unexpectedly left me feeling upbeat and hopeful and refreshed . It also left me rather fatigued as the clock often passed midnight before I could no longer continue reading. Errands were left undone or put off. I simply could not put the books down.

Before Stiger and Kraus there was a Stonebreaker

I will start by saying that I am not normally a fan of dwarves. They have not been my favorite breed of fantasy characters. The ones already portrayed in this universe have been xenophobic and often self serving. I'm pretty sure that's a standard statement. To read Reclaiming Honor, I threw aside my own prejudice and opened myself up to soak in a different culture.

Tovak is considered a Pariah. He was a child when his father, a great military commander, lost his honor. (Or at least that is what the survivors of the Horde attack claim. I have doubts to the veracity of these whiteness.) His socioeconomic status changes in an instant. Now, he is regarded as little more than a slave. His father is a coward without honor forever tarnishing Tovak's reputation. He is worthless to all dwarves. To cast off this stigma, and to try and regain Legend, Tovak hopes to join a military company during the dwarves last days on Tanis.

While not as much action as we have come to expect, it is a solid story. Marc Edelheit always brings so much imagery that you can almost sense the worlds we are reading. This is the first time I've read Quincy Allen, I am sure we will see your name more in the future.

This is the first book in the authors new series - it runs as a standalone series together with the Stiger and Karus Chronicles, set on the same world that Karus and Legio IX are transported to but ahead of that event. I found the first few pages explaining the context of the Dvegr race and some of its more unusual social characteristics a bit heavy going but once into the story proper it was yet another of the authors "can't put it down till I finish it!" books. The story flows really well with interesting twists and turns. My only complaint really is the author cannot write them fast enough!! You get to the end of a book and are desperate to know what happens next...
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy novels I think - personally - you would do better reading at least one of the Stiger novels or the Karus novels first though to really make sense of what is happening and who is doing what and why. But definitely read this one!!!

Tovak is an outcast and pariah among the dwarves. His only wish is to serve in a warband and face the horde that is set upon conquering the lands. He wants to reclaim his honor and prove himself. Most importantly he wants to set himself apart from his fathers cowardice. Like all of Marc's books this story has all the elements that make a great fantasy novel. I have read everything he has out and I count them among some of my favorites. Teaming up with Quincy J Allen the duo have created a rich and captivating world. The story grabs you from the start and only gets better as you read. This is the type of story that saddens you when you reach the words the end. I look forward to the next installment. I highly recommend this book and for that matter all of Marc Allen Edelheit's work for fantasy fans.

This is more of a "coming of age" story than I'm accustomed to in the Stigerverse. A young Dwarf is intent on joining a war band and redeeming his families honor (Legend). There's plenty for him to learn as he has to forge friendships and prove himself to both the leadership and his squad-mates.

There's lots of background here for fans of The Tiger, there's good insight into Dvergr customs (some familiar beastiary to be found too).

If I had to classify this one, I'd put it into a young-adult category. There's just the right amount of tension, not a lot of blood and gore, and like I'd mentioned... it really is a story about a young Dvergr finding his way in the world. But Stiger fans will need this in their library for... reasons. I'm looking forward to Tovak's journey to reclaim his place and build his Legend.

Action packed adventure as a young dwarf seeks to build his future in the military

A stigma hangs over his head and none of it is his doing. Even just existing is a burden as a youngster works to overcome the accusations charged to his father. Early life as a military recruit is never easy, especially when tied to the complications brought by family dishonor. Cool courage, a staunch heart, and bold actions, coupled with friends willing to take a risk, force a new respect and grudging recognition that family ties are not the only measure of an individual. Well worth the time.

I am halfway through this book and really enjoying it. I have read all the other books in epic series and was not sure what to expect from this one, but I can see how the author is connecting these books to each other in some way or another. I like the way the author has gone back in the past which explain how a person in the series became who they are. It is a nice enjoyable series to read, and I have a hard time putting the book down at night when I go to bed keeping me up pass my normal bedtime. For Marc Alan thank you for the entertainment of a good book to read and for an exciting series after this book I will only have one more to read before I will have to wait for the next books in all the different series that are all tied together. If you started to read any of the books in this world series, you are going to enjoy them I have.

How Much Legend?

A lot, I promise you. A LOT! Yet another arc of time and events we have come to cherish from MAE, this time with an assist from QJA. Story development, character development, stirring and exciting events all with with a some mythical creatures and just a touch of Might and Magic. These all leave us gasping at what we expect to come. As usual we are left drooling in anticipation. Enjoy.

Loved it!

I started reading this a while back then lost it among my other ebooks until recently. It took a bit to get into as I had trouble with the troubles I found the main character having to deal with. But I persevered with an ice-cold Coke and chocolate within reach. Then I noticed I hadn't touched either so caught up in Tovak's story. I have more respect for dvergrs now. Can't wait to read the sequel!

Another winner

Just keep them coming. I have enjoyed each book in this universe and am always awaiting the next. Absolutely love the new characters. Especially since at least at the beginning we get to see life from the point of view of the "little people" and I don't mean the dwarves.

As usual, a great yarn that grips and holds right up the the end. I will be waiting eagerly for the next instalment
An unexpected bonus was the way the protagonist dealt with prejudice against him. He chose NOT to be cowed by it but, rather, to be motivated by it. A far more productive path than the “ I’m offended” society we now live in

Excellent character development

A really enjoyable read and one I finished in 3 days as I basically couldn’t put it down. I enjoyed the detail in the authors writing and it progressed with a pace that sped up well with the actions and slowed when needed in the more sensitive areas.

Well recommended

Pretty Good

Grand Adventure book, classic redemption story arc.
I wish they would have delved a bit more into the culture, though. I got the basics but I wish I knew more about Pariahs and why they came to be about, etc. But if you prefer action to backstory, this is a great book.

Beginning of a good new series

I have read each of Marc Alan Edelheits books so I thought his latest book would be good. I was not disappointed. It takes place in a land of Orcs, Goblins on one side and Dwarves on the other. The main character is an outcast Dwarf and story about his journey to make his Legend. Good read I am looking foreword to the next volume.

Marc Edelheit knows how to write. He knows how to tell a great story from scratch. The book started slow because the reader had to get used to the characters, the kingdoms, the terms. I will say
" The Pariah" did reclaim his honor and earned the respect of his fellow soldiers. Actions speak louder than words. Highly recommend.

A fun read

You don't have to have read any of Marc's other books to enjoy this one. There are now three series that are prequels to the Stiger's Tigers group and all are totally enjoyable on their own.
