Cartoonist and contemporary artist Yan Cong is a founding figure of the independent comics community in China. At once surrealist and deeply personal, this comic is a demonstration of the outstanding storytelling that makes his work so unique both in China and abroad.
A man is left by his girlfriend and succumbs to the ensuing loneliness. The comic is sparse in story so there isn't much to go on, but it is rich in atmosphere and tone. Yan Cong implements some dense blank ink washes and brushes to create a highly textured looking comic that is visually inventive and simply interesting throughout. I'm a fan of mostly wordless comics like this, and Cry was a visual showcase in that style of spare storytelling.
