Cute volume. A better balance of action with slice-of-life vignettes.

The big problem with this book is that the light novel author doesn’t pace the story according to volumes. He just writes on the web, and then they bundle it. That means that there’s no rise and fall of action according to traditional patterns. There were about three different stories in this volume, so it felt like three different endings.

The best way to look at this series is as a sitcom/serialized adventure with irregular story sizes. Some of the stories are long and crossover through two volumes, as in the case of the school festival, and some of them wrap up quite quickly. Many of them don’t end up tidily at the end of the volume.

Perhaps I enjoyed this volume better because there were less foodie fan club moments than previous volumes. Regardless, I found it to be a relaxing read, though I would like to see Yuna’s character be less blissfully stupid. I get the feeling the author will write this girl as eternally fifteen and clueless as long as he can milk it.

There are aspects of the story that I find disappointing. The prose is simplistic and uninspired. (I don’t believe that’s the fault of the translator.) Also, I find the “Yuna is pretty and doesn’t know it” trope to be annoying and hamfisted. Yes, I get it. Yuna is self-conscious and pretty. Yuna is more talented than any fifteen year old shut-in ever has hope of being. Yuna is perfect. All good reasons to dislike a story. However, a volume that involves Yuna slugging bad guys in her bear outfit is truly all that I can ask for with this series. The rest of the stuff falls off the story truck and is left behind.

★★★½☆

Not a bad one. Finally, some action. Also, Yuna wears a school uniform (gasp!).

There is one aspect of this book which bugs me. It hasn't really been an issue with this series before, so it probably annoyed me more. The classic trope is the OP character who thinks they're weak. No amount of evidence will convince them otherwise, usually because they are incredibly stupid. ('I Parry Everything' is the current most egregious anime of this type.) Yuna, out of her bear gear, is a pretty girl, except that she isn't: the enormous multitude of compliments she gets from several unconnected sources with no reason to lie or give empty flattery is not enough to convince her that she's not, in fact, plain. Given how strong she is (in combat), and that she knows she's strong, the author probably thinks that her delusions regarding her looks constitute a weakness. Actually, it's just painfully annoying.

But, not a bad read marred by a cliffhanger ending.

Another fun installment in the series! This volume was kinda slow though. We continued off from the festival, had some down time in Crimona, then started Another exploration plot. This book was mainly hanging out with Noa, Fina and the rest of the extended crew. It was enjoyable to read but there was little action or development. It felt like a filler episode. Cute but not completely necessary. I would recommend this series if you like to read cozy fantasy.

No bear suit on the cover! *gasp!*
Other than that, we get the end of the school festival, with possibly the best battle in the series to date. The next half was a lot of setup for the next volumes (beach vacation logistics AND a mission in the desert, that bear is getting busy!) and had some funny moments. See ya next volume~
