Former FBI psychological profiler Austin Drake has been dragged from his scotch-induced stupor to work with the young and tenacious Maria Castellanos in a new private investigation business. They’ve just hung out their shingle when a disturbing case falls in their laps. Three young women have been kidnapped and are being brutally tortured live on webcams from somewhere in Miami Beach. While Austin initially shirks the idea of investigating, believing the police are in the best position to solve the case, it soon becomes apparent there is more going on than meets the eye. A conspiracy in the police department and false leads drive Austin and Maria deep into the disturbing world of the dark web. And when one of the girls is murdered live on camera, Austin must determine how far he’s willing to go to seek justice.

Great book on how NOT to write a novel

Its not the worst book i have read, its a close second. It would be a great example on what not to do. The author spends too much time on internal character thoughts. In w well written novel they develop the story and the character. This authors characters go off on tangents like a 90 year old with alzheimers who cant make up his mind about anything. The characters make idiotic unrealistic decisions. The author has limited knowlege of police procedures, florida law and constantly inserts his mundane politics into the narrative. It was a tortuous slog to get through the book. The plot moved slowly, and was terribly predictible. Some slow books eventually get going and end spectacularly. The ending is just laughable. I can say there was good thing about the novel. At least it wasnt 1000 pages. It was truly a relief to escape the torture I experienced reading this book.

Gripping read. Tragic but uplifting. Wow !!! What an amazing journey in this crime mystery read. It's a long one that goes by in the blink of an eye, and I quickly became immersed in the characters and storyline within the first chapter. I loved Austin, former FBI profiler turned PI. I empathized with his work endured PTSD and illness if alchoholism, but I loved his vulnerability and humanity. He seemed trapped in a painful vortex. The dark web scenes are graphic, devastating, and mind blowing. What research the author has done for this one! Phenomenal!! Not for the faint of heart or the weak of stomach. This author grows with each book and each series, and I'm constantly impressed and moved by his genius. When I got to the end of the book I was left with a euphoric feeling. What a whirlwind of emotions!!

Good book, would have been better edited down

It was a good read. It was very long. I ended up skipping so many passages, paragraphs, and sometimes even pages.
There was way too much other stuff.
Only way I could say it.
I didn’t want to read about what Austin did so many times before.
Those parts go so boring.
Good thing is only one error/mistake.
Carmen texted when they left the hospital, he wrote Maria texted, when Maria was sitting in the car with him.

Good book, could have been so much better, probably half as long. Yes that much could be cut out of it.

If was shorter, I would give it four stars.

A reasonable book in need of a good editor.
Far too rambling and repetitive.
A story I have read before, but was OK. I did skip over bits due to the repetition and these bits not moving the story forward.
3 girls get kidnapped and their images of being tortured put on the internet . 1 girl in hospital unable to talk due to trauma.
New detective agency takes on the case (their first case 2 mins after they open their doors) to find the girls as the police don't seem bothered.
He is the retired FBI profiler, She is what appears to be a tech wiz.
Will give the next book a go, if it is at my library to see if the writing improves.

This is my first time reading this author, the blurb caught my attention and I’m very pleased that I gave it a shot. The plot is brilliant and held my attention from start to finish. I liked how the characters had depth to them. This is a long read, but one that is worth the time.

A really good read. There is a lot of detail and print size is totally readable. Austin seems to be a bit unreal though. He is a bit too good to be true. He and his partner solve the problem of the missing college girls. It's sort of a surprise as to who kidnapped the girls, and the cop is sort of over the top. All in all it was a good story and I'll look into Chase Water's other series.

This is a great read. It's intense the whole way through, a real page turner. IT's dark with some disturbing scenes but which complete the atmosphere created. Wonderful characters that dragged me into the story, despite not being a huge fan of crime thrillers. Defintely a one click book.
