She can't stand him. He blames her for his company's woes. Now, they have to work together.Nia has devoted her career to fighting for life-saving medicines for Ugandans with HIV. But when first-line treatments begin to fail, she must find a new source of affordable drugs before patients start to die. Too bad she just publicly bashed the head of a pharma company that owns a powerful new anti-HIV drug.
Magnus is poised to market a game-changing HIV drug, but an avalanche of bad PR threatens to destroy his company's reputation and kill his bottom line. When he travels to Uganda to boost his social justice credentials, he's not expecting to feel such a deep attraction to the woman whose viral blog post led to all his troubles.
To get what they want they must work together. He's out to rescue his company and she's trying to save lives. Neither dreamed their hearts would be on the line.
This is an inspirational romance with Christian themes.
I didn't quite know what to expect going into this book, but was pleasantly surprised to be as engaged as I was.
The writing reflected the author's heart and the characters took me on a journey to a culture I found myself fascinated by. The writing goes into a lot of cultural issues, most especially the fight against HIV/AIDS, which I didn't expect to be such a central point. But that's what made it matter. The romance was well-developed and stood its ground against the wider theme of healing and life-giving medicine.
Refreshing to see deeper themes explored in fiction that glorifies God. Will definitely keep an eye out for more of Milla Holt's stories.
I really enjoyed this book. The plot, characters, themes are all well done. The science part worried me a bit at first, but Holt writes clearly and it's all easily understandable. I look forward to reading more of her books.
All Nia wanted to do was help the people in Uganda who have Aids find less expensive medicine. She has no qualms about speaking her mind if the prices are too expensive. She blasts one drug company in particular. Then she meets the man behind the company and decides that she may have been rash in her judgement.
I really enjoyed this novel by Milla Holt. It definitely qualifies as a sweet romance. It brought up the sighing feelings, but there was not even any kissing. Instead the emphasis is on the relationship. Someday I hope to read more in this series.
This story has a slow start, but I found myself warming to the Magnus and Nia as each of them struggled with the attraction that rose between them. Opposition to Nia’s forthright character created misunderstandings that kept me turning the pages. A pleasant read
An interesting story line with a nice twist. Great background research on the subject of HIV and Tropical diseases. Enjoyed the interracial relationships as well. I encourage others to read it. They will enjoy it
The story is written with a well-loved trope but flavored with big themes. I enjoyed escaping to Europe and Africa, getting to know a couple that had every reason to not fall in love, but walk with them while they did. Lovely, well-written story.
Nia Asaba is an Ugandan health worker with strong opinions about the ethics of big pharmaceutical companies, opinions which often get her in trouble. But she thinks it’s more important to ensure the people of her country have access to affordable and reliable HIV/AIDS medication and care.
Magnus Klassen is the CEO of Nordic Wind Pharmaceuticals, developers of a revolutionary new HIV treatment. But their stock prices are falling, due to bad publicity following a post from a random blogger named Nia Asaba.
So it’s up to Marcus to visit Uganda and try and reverse the effects of the bad publicity by offering the Ugandan government some of their new vaccine. Of course, Nia and Marcus are thrown together, and sparks fly as they’re united by their combined passion for good healthcare and all things Jane Austen (I have to love a hero who reads and loves Jane Austen, and who finds Emma Woodhouse as annoying as I do).
Falling for the Foe is an excellent first novel. It has a unique plot and setting, which places a fascinating spin on what could have been a mundane repetition of the falling-for-the-billionaire trope (no, it’s not my favourite). But I do love intelligent and strong-minded heroines, which is why liked Nia from the get-go and wanted only good things to happen to her (but this is a romance novel, and we know a good romance never runs smoothly).
I especially liked the way Marcus’s backstory was introduced. Our first impulse was to not like him for the way he’d ignored Nia at university, then didn’t even remember her. But, as we got to know him, we found there were good reasons why Marcus didn’t remember Nia, and that brought us back to wanting him to succeed.
But the price of Marcus’s success might be Nia’s failure, which gives the novel plenty of conflict, and a great I-told-you-so ending.
This is the first book in a series, and the second will deal with Marcus’s widowed brother, Ragnar. I’m already looking forward to it!
First book I’ve read by Milla Holt and I was swept away by this story! The cover, to begin, worked its magic and the gentle progression of a sweet romance between two otherwise warring parties kept me engaged from beginning to end up. If you’ve never traveled to Africa you’ll enjoy the virtual experience described in intelligent detail here. I appreciated the believability of the conflict with regard to making treatment available to those who suffer from HIV yet can’t possibly afford it. Well researched and a pleasing cast of color blind characters. Highly recommended!
I've found a new favorite! The complex characters and a rich cultural setting (Uganda) that's rarely included in fiction was the cherry on top of the dynamic storytelling. I'll be reading many more of Ms Holt's books!
One of the very few books that demonstrates how to live godly, as opposed to assuming they are Christian with very little demonstration. It's not a heavy book in one sense but the writer demonstrates knowledge of the subjects raised in the text, a lot of characters have a title but no clue. I particularly admire a book that shows the characters mindset where they treat each other as human first, not Afro- or Euro first. It also shows two nations, two classes, two races without the author dropping judgment calls about either, there is no comparison, just illustration. For that writer worthy of top honours. Above all, the writer uses scripture with understanding and this is even better demonstrated in free book. So in word, thought and deed the writer exhibits a true consciousness of Christian character without the normal tantrums and assumption of Jesus' intervention without genuine repentance. So we are able to reflect and see the danger of religion- how a Pence,Cruz or Lindsay is possible. How treason is possible when men honour their culture and education, even their political affiliation before their God. Trump is possible when people assume they are abiding in the vine but are totally disconnected. It is sad and horrific but expected when religion is mistaken for Christian character. My greatest takeaway: wow! Real Christians. But also the undeniable realization that the habits of our forefathers will dominate our headscape until we decide to follow Jesus in truth. The free book shows journeying from the place of one's experiences and prejudices into a true examination of self, genuine repentance and restoration.
Love it and thank you very much. Have a great day. I forgot I was on lockdown!!!!!
This book is truly accurate in its description of underprivileged and the way many companies use and abuse people with no money Nd no power. Having seen a country just left of Uganda, Namibia, firsthand, and seen the poverty, sickness, alcoholism, and desperation folks have when poverty takes a grip on their lives. So very sad. Our daughter, through the Peace Corp was able to, as in the book, vet children vaccinated. She found that if she ate no meat herself, she could feed 4 children a day. A small dent. and yet, that is exactly where the Lord meant for her to be, doing his will. This is the only book I have seen that uncovers this poverty cycle so well. Hats off to you, Milla Holt!! Well written and well observed. So thank you!
Nia lived in Uganda and fought to get life saving HIV medication for the people living there. She posted a lot of negative remarks about big pharma companies, including Nordic Wind. Magnus is the owner and CEO of Nordic Wind which just had a medication approved for HIV treatment. He went to Uganda to try to change Nia's opinion of Nordic Wind. While there, he saw the real challenges of the Ugandan people. You can't help but be drawn into this story.
Sometimes first impressions are incorrect. Ugandan HIV/AIDS activist Nia Asaba and CEO of Nordic Wind Pharmaceuticals Magnus Klassen when they work together to offer affordable drugs to treat AIDS victims. Sweet romance, enjoyable story.
Falling for the Foe was an awesome read. The author created an interesting plot that included well-written characters engaged in witty dialogue. I loved the imagery and other vivid details the author used to create an uplifting tone. Overall, I liked the narrative.
This is a sweet, well-paced story of two unlikely characters coming together. The non-profit element brings to light the needs of so many others, and inspires the reader to be grateful for what blessings they have.
Overall this was a good book. A little trite and obvious... I knew right where if was going from the beginning. A sweet story all tied up in a bow at the end. Great for a quick and easy read.
Magnus' father irritated me so much, I really liked Nina's character, and to be honest, at first, I didn't like the story but now I changed my mind, can't wait to read the next book in the series.
I loved this story. Such great statistics about HIV and AIDs in third world countries. I loved the characters, their struggles and dependence on God. You will love this story!
This was my first read by this author, and I must say that I really enjoyed her style. The characters were all well-developed, the plot was interesting and relevant to today's culture, and the story flowed very well. Nia is a smart woman with spunk, Magnus, a polite, caring man of character, Karl, typical of many money grabbers in this world, and Tabitha - a sweet, match-making Grandma living in Uganda - just to name a few of the interesting people one comes across in this well-done novel.
Looking forward to reading more by this author, Milla Holt.
Holt is a new author for me but I will be reading more of her work. I really enjoyed Magnus and Nia's story. Magnus is a fond memory in that I had a manager named Magnus and he was such a great manager to me. Other names of characters bring back fond memories as well. Of course I did not like Jessica. The story is very realistic. I have heard true to life stories about parents like those two. I am just glad that Magnus didn't do anything too drastic to get out of his father's clutches.
This was a new author for me and I absolutely love this book. I love the awareness and topic of HIV/AIDS. The romance was nice but I would have loved more from their story as it felt rushed or quickly ended. I will definitely read the next book becaused I loved the authors writing style.
What an engaging story! Well written, clear ideas, supporting scriptures and pleasant characters, mostly. I loved the strength of the character "Nia". For time reading the author's work and looking forward to reading the next two books in this series.
I enjoyed this story because it was very straightforward. There were no surprises or twist and turns but it held my interest because the characters seemed genuine. I was rooting for Magnus and Nia to get together. The writing was smooth and the author made her characters relatable. The only parts I found a little off were being a Christian thing. I felt that theme was thrown in the story for Christians readers to relate.
What a beautiful story of faithfulness and diligence. An adventure of digging deep, discovery, and faith. The characters were refreshing, the plot intriguing, and the setting delightful. I’ve become a huge fan of the author and highly recommend her books.
Great world building and tension in this high stakes story: international public health. A Ugandan HIV activist critical of a big pharmaceutical company that can ease access of infection fighting drugs and the company's founder. I loved the sense of local culture: places and foods, that I found myself going on line to look for recipes. The book ends with a great epilogue from the perspective of the hero of the next novel, thus laying the foundation for his story in book 2.
Falling for the for combines principles and activism to tell a story about the fight for what is right. In a lot of ways both Nia and Magnus had their points but they needed to see one another's sides to understand that working together would benefit them and their concerns.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This was a fun easy read! The characters are easy to love, and the setting in Uganda is so descriptive and very accurate (I lived in Rwanda and visited Uganda). I really enjoyed it, It’s a fun romance/love story, if you like romance! I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!
