Astra is queen of the Companion world. She has been at the king’s side for ten years, but his interest is waning. If she can just hold on a little longer, she will take her rightful place as mentor and never share a man’s bed again. But a single game of cards threatens to bring her future to ruins. The king’s wager is a brutal reminder that she is replaceable, disposable—a prize to be won. Now she must find a way to survive outside the castle until she can find a way back inside its walls.
Dion is captain of the Galen army, a soldier, a humanitarian—and possibly a traitor. He does not believe in people as property, so the concept of a Companion is confronting. Mistress or slave? He cannot decide. The king’s Companion seems content enough with her eternal smile and ability to command a room with just a tilt of her head and flash of blue eyes, but he sees past the painted face and rehearsed laughter. She is broken. She is fire. And a game of cards later, she is entirely his problem.
This is book five in The Companion series. If you enjoy a moving love story set in a medieval world, then you will love The Captain’s Prize.
Trigger warning: This book contains violence and dark themes.

I have bought and read all the Companion books in print at this time, they are great! I am an older lady on a limited income, but they are worth the money I paid. I have read thousands of books since I started reading as a child, (I am a very fast reader) and have really enjoyed these books. I really enjoy reading and rereading good books, these are good books.
I loved this story. Dion and Astra are a tough couple with reservations. Their relationship starts rocky as they spend time fighting with and for each other. This story kept me locked in and I devoured this book in one day. Tanya does an awesome job of writing strong female characters and Astra doesn’t disappoint. This story was entertaining and addictive. If you love YA romance you won’t be disappointed.
This has been a great series. Dion doesn't plan to fall in love and certainly Astra does not. She plans to return to Archdale Castle. She wants to become the best Mentor they ever had. But she doesn't plan to fall in love with all the orphans, Primrose and oh, yes, Dion. I can't wait for the next book in this series. I thought Cora deserves a happy ending. I am sure her marriage hasn't been easy. But then she is a strong woman and most likely is giving King Jayr a run for his money. Hopefully, King Pandarus either grows up and realizes what a jerk he is or he gets a very big "comeuppance " in his life. Great series!
Tanya is my favourite author. I have loved all of her books and quickly consume every word she releases. As a huge fan, I wasn’t sure what to expect from Astra’s book as she wasn’t a particularly likeable character in previous books but, as always, Tanya draws me into the story. She always paces the story perfectly and builds up to a very dramatic ending that is so captivating you can’t put it down. All you can do is hang on and hope these beloved characters will find happiness in the end. Thanks for another great book Tanya!
Amazing!! I wasn't quite sure if I wanted to read a book about Astra, but I'm so glad I did! There is so much more to her character than I ever expected. I'd most certainly sold her short and I'm glad that was rectified in this story! She's fierce, goofy and so lonely it burns. Then there is Dion....with a heart of gold. Don't get me wrong....there were times when I wanted to slap them both, but without giving anything away, they are beautiful characters! As always, Tanya Bird's writing is exquisite and just as the others in this series, there is pain, happiness and gut wrenching twists and turns. Buckle up and enjoy the ride!
I'm still savoring this series by Tanya Bird. After this one I sadly only have one more left. What a great story! I was so happy to see Astra finally away from Archdale! Her love for Primrose was just adorable and I loved her development. As always Tanya Bird delivers adventure, heart and romance with this story. I loved the chemistry between Dion and Astra, they both try to ignore their feelings but it is just undeniable! Getting more of Sapphira and Stamitos was also a treat! The epilogue was amazing and I loved how it set up for the last book. I can't wait to read the rest of Cora's story next!
Although, this heroine has not been my favorite character. But, you can't always choose your heroes. ( even if you want to shake the snot out of 'em) . I hated her at the beginning of this series and didn't like her much here, but that being said...I see where she comes from and this was a good book. If you follow the series closely you can tell it's wrapping up even before the announcement of the final. And BTW Ms. Bird if you don't manage to kill off Paderus... I swear to sweet Jesus I will NEVER forgive you !! Amanda Lee Middletown,Oh
This series just keeps getting better & better. I can’t seem to quit it! Only one more book & the series is over. I’m not sure I can take it, might need another re through. I love this world & all the drama & love it entails. I was a little hesitant to read about Astra because, let’s face it, she was not the nicest companion but I am glad I did because I loved her & Dion’s story. I love how every book you also get a glimpse of the last girl’s story & how they’re doing now. I can’t wait to read Cora’s!
Okay, do not be deterred by the three star rating. The writing was superb, I just personally can't stand Astra. I never liked her. I love Aldara, Hatti, Saphira, and even Cora oh, and Petra was okay too, but Astra always irritated me so naturally, her story did too.
The book bored me a bit, but once again, only because I didn't like Astra. I thought she was written so very well though! Her fears and trauma were realistic and Tanya did a great job justifying WHO Astra was.
If you like her character, you will love the book. 😁
I look forward to Tanya's books. Not only for the story and content thereof, but because we get to see old friends again, and meet new ones. And say good riddance to old enemies. Even you can can read this book as a stand-alone, I highly recommend reading all of the books. That way you get the back story of where Astra, Aldara, Sapphire, Petra, & Hati come from; and how they and their 'knigts in (not so shiney), armor' saved each other.
I was anxiously waiting for this story especially once it was announced that Atra would have of her own! Tanya Bird does NOT disappoint!!! I could not put this book down until I was completely finished! This entire series is literally happiness and it's so good for your soul!
Once I picked this book up, I could hardly put it down. The characters sucked you in and made you love them right away. Easy read as well as keeping you on the edge of your seat. Loved this book! Can’t wait for the final book of the series to come out in 2020!!
Another masterful addition to the companion series!
This fifth installment in the companion series was masterful and beautiful. Astra and Dion's love story was filled with its ups and downs, but it all lead to a swoon worthy ending that left you begging for book six in the series.
I am in love with Tanya Bird...? love romance. and Tanya has add 📺ed a nice twist to rimance... I get excited when a companion finds a better life... Astra was a little tougher to accept happiness.. Yet sweet Dion showed so much love & patience.... The perfect man TV for a strong willed woman like Astra... E njoy the journey.. My only complaint ; it was too short.. Happy Reading.
I loved the first few books so much that revolved around Tyron and Aldara but then there seemed to be a long gap before the series continued. Somehow, by searching new books that have been released I saw TB had released a few more. I was so excited! I'm thrilled to be reacquainted with this world. I can't wait for book 6!
This has been a great series. Dion doesn't plan to fall in love nor does Astra . She plans to return to Archdale Castle. She wants to become the best Mentor they ever had. But she falls for the orphans, and of course Primrose and oh, yes, Dion too. King Pandarus is a jerk and he really does not deserve the love of his brother or mother.
As with everyone of the authors books, I start looking for her next book before I am finished with the one I am reading..Her books are all well written, although judgment is also spelled with an extra e that has not been done for centuries. FYI
All five of these book were well written with great character development. Magical, kept reading until they were all gone. I can't wait for number 6!!!
I have read all of the Companion series thus so far and I have gotten really attached to these characters. I love the way this author writes, and builds her characters. Out of all the books this one maybe felt a little weaker than the others overall, but then again Astra was not my favorite Compainion to begin with. Still, it was worth reading.
The book started slow for me, but once the voyage was over I got into the groove. I thought at one point Primrose was going to be a suspended unknown character again, but thank you for keeping her in the book. Loved the book and look forward to #6.
The description of children’s music was superb. I didn’t care much about heroine through previous books, but now I like her. Heroine had swoon-worthy tender heart.
Not bad. It was nice to see the girl run to the rescue. The series felt forced. And the fact that entire kingdoms can be crossed in a day was distractingly bad
I felt that Astra was not really a likeable character at all in the series. She is beautiful, very “skilled” and knowledgeable, but completely emotionally detached. It was hard to accept any real relationship between Astra and Dion because of this despite a crack in the facade near the end. Through most of the story Astra even planned to to get “back and into” a job she coveted despite other changes in her situation. I really liked the setting, family and extended family involvement in the story though. Stamitos and Sapphira are familiar and very likeable well grounded characters for Astra to learn about real life “choices” from. Dion seems like a good man and his family history and connections highlight the political arena and players involved. The political situation between all the kingdoms- who was allies with whom- was most interesting. I can really see how this story leads directly to the next book. I was never really drawn into Astra and Dion’s story but rather the situations and details leading to the final novel.
