The cookies climb out of the cookie tin and go on a Halloween adventure in this rhythmic read-aloud, perfect for family sharing.

Seven spooky cookies sitting in a tin, waiting for the moonlight to let the magic in...

Cookie Boo, from award-winning author-illustrator Ruth Paul, is sure to make celebrating Halloween fun!

When the cookies escape for a Halloween romp they will have some tricks and treats before the night is through. This foil-covered picture book is a good choice for a not-so-spooky storytime.

"This adorable story is conveyed in lilting, rollicking rhymes that zing along with minimal text per page. Its original take on a Halloween theme and its cute 'Gingerbread Man' vibe will entertain and delight young readers." (Kirkus starred review)

A collection of colorful Halloween cookies go on the run in this cute rhyming picture-book from New Zealand author/artist Ruth Paul, escaping from their tin when Little Monster comes to look at them. Running out into the night, they say "Boo!" to all sorts of creatures, from fireflies in a jar to skeletons, witch's cats to ghosts. Eventually they must hide inside a jack-o-lantern, before making their way home...

I was not familiar with Paul's work before picking up her Cookie Boo from my library's Halloween display this past weekend, but am glad to have discovered it. Her rhyming text reads well, rollicking along in a smoothly entertaining way, while her colorful illustrations capture the madcap antics of the colorful cookies on their Halloween adventure. On a personal note, as someone who usually makes decorated Halloween sugar cookies, I was charmed by the "identity" of the protagonists here, as I rarely see decorated sugar cookies in holiday stories, unless they are devoted to Christmas. Recommended to picture-book readers looking for engaging Halloween fare for younger audiences.

COOKIE BOO is an adorable, rhyming Halloween picture book. Some Halloween cookies are in a tin, but when the moonlight comes in, they come to life, going on an adventure. The cookies say boo to everything they see, and mount a daring escape from Little Monster, who tries to eat them. The book ends with the cookies heading back to their tin safely.

What I loved: This book is filled with colorful and bright illustrations that bring Halloween to life. The cookies are adorable Halloween shapes, and I loved how the cookies are juxtaposed with their lively counterparts, such as the black cat and black cat cookie. They make some mischief and have some fun on their trip, with plenty of boos all over. The monsters are also cute, and they are adorable characters that appear throughout. The text is rhyming, which is fun for adults to read and delightful for little ears. This is a sweet Halloween adventure with plenty of appeal for young readers.

Final verdict: A charming and delightful Halloween adventure, COOKIE BOO is a colorful, rhyming celebration of the holiday that will highly appeal to young readers. Recommend for toddlers through elementary school-aged children.

Please note that I received an ARC. All opinions are my own.

I was a little nervous that the sentient cookies might get eaten, but fortunately they survive.

A silly Halloween story with a catchy rhyme scheme. Follow the adorable cookies on their Halloween adventure as they yell “Boo!” at everything they meet. This is a fun Halloween book for all ages (really, I’m in my 30s and I love it), and great for those who want to celebrate but don’t like scary things.

I’d also be remiss to not give praise to the illustrator… who gave little booty’s to the cookies. 🫣😂

This is a fun one perfect for Halloween or Spooky themed storytime. I liked especially that the rhyming sequence was simple, clear throughout the story. There was also no points where it was strained. This will be a fun one that may inspire some spooky cookie fun!

Seven spooky cookies escape the cookie tin, and are up to tricks and screaming BOO at everything and everyone they. But when a monster tries to eat them, they run back to the safety of their cookie. This silly rhyming Halloween story is a fun read, even till the end...?

Cookies evading monster eating them and explore outdoors, all to return to cookie tin at the end... Umm the monster will eat them then. I don't understand story or purpose this was written.

FEBRUARY 2022 Review

In our house we read, watch and wear Halloween all year long. This was not my decision. It was my toddlers.

Cookie Boo has now been inducted into the Hall of Favorites. We have 2 Halloween books that we read every night. I’m certain once we buy this one we will add it to the nightly roster.

I’m other words…we loved it. ❤️
